、NEX A Referenced Standards and Applicable Dates 8 MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1461 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice covers the construction requirements for high pressure, lug- and wafer-type, iron and ductile iron knife gate valves. 1.2 This Standard Practice covers flanged body designs compatible

、with ASME B16.1, Class 125 flanges for sizes NPS 2 (DN 50) through NPS 60 (DN 1500), ASME B16.1 Class 250 flanges for sizes NPS 2 (DN 50) through NPS 48 (DN 1200), and ASME B16.42 Class 150 and 300 flanges for sizes NPS 2 (DN 50) through NPS 24 (DN 600). 2. STANDARD UNITS The values stated in either

、 U.S. customary units or (SI) metric units are to be regarded separately as the standard. Within the text, the (SI) metric units are shown in parenthesis. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from

、 the two systems may result in non-conformance with this Standard Practice. 3. PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE RATINGS 3.1 This Standard Practice is limited to valves with Class 125 and 250 pressure-temperature ratings, per Table 1 in ASME B16.1, and Class 150 and 300 pressure-temperature ratings, per Table 1

、in ASME B16.42. 3.2 Valves made from unlisted materials or not meeting the wall thickness requirements may be pressure-temperature rated by the manufacturer in accordance with proof pressure test data requirements of UG-101 of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII. The manufacturers rat

、ing shall not exceed the applicable standard flanged valve rating of ASME B16.1 or B16.42 for the applicable body material. 4. SIZE The valve sizes in Tables 1, 2, 3, and 4 are equal to the nominal sizes of the end connections. 5. MARKING Valves shall be marked in accordance with MSS SP-25, and in a

、ccordance with the following requirements and modifications: a) Manufacturers name or trademark/logo. b) The body material of construction or code. When more than one material or grade of material is used, each shall be identified. When lining in contact with the fluid is used, it shall be listed an

、d identified as “lining”. c) For valves manufactured for closure in one direction only, the valve shall be marked showing the “seat side” (downstream side) of the valve in such a manner that the markings can be seen with the valve installed in the pipeline. The user shall be responsible for correct

、directional installation. Bi-directional closure valves need no closure direction marking. d) A tag is to be attached to the valves for installation purposes, indicating: 1) Care to be taken in valve installation with respect to direction of closure; 2) Care to be taken when installing studs or bolt

、s in the tapped holes of the flange in the area of the chest, to prevent chest damage. The chest is the body area between the packing chamber and the flanges; 3) Packing nuts may require adjustment to obtain a tight seal. e) The stem material need not be listed. HIGH PRESSURE, LUG- AND WAFER-TYPE, I

、RON AND DUCTILE IRON KNIFE GATE VALVES MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1462 6. MATERIALS 6.1 Valves shall be iron or ductile iron. Materials shall be in accordance with the requirements for materials listed in ASME B16.1 and ASME B16.42. Unlisted materials may be used by agreement between purchaser and man

、ufacturer. For steel or alloy steel, see MSS SP-135. 6.2 Internal part materials shall have a corrosion resistance equivalent to or better than the valve body. 7. DESIGN 7.1 The design of all valves shall prevent permanent distortion of the body or seats when tested, as specified in Section 10. 7.2

、Threaded holes used for flange bolting shall provide for full thread engagement to a depth of not less than the nominal bolt diameter. Unless otherwise specified by the customer, threaded holes for flange bolting shall be tapped in accordance with Table 1, 2, 3, or 4 of this Standard Practice. 7.3 T

、he valve port minimum flow diameter shall be equal to the ASME B16.1 or ASME B16.42 fitting inside diameter, applicable to Pressure Class and Size. For NPS not listed in ASME B16.1 or ASME B16.42, the following shall be used: 7.4 Because of variations in basic valve design, differential pressure, an

、d valve accessibility, it is not possible to standardize the conditions under which a manually operated valve requires mechanical assistance. Consideration should be given to the use of mechanical assistance on all valves where the differential pressure, when operating, approaches the valves rated w

、orking pressure. In addition, consideration should be given to the use of mechanical assistance on all NPS 12 (DN 300) valves and larger, regardless of differential pressure. 7.5 Body Wall Thickness 7.5.1 All valves shall have minimum wall thickness as required by ASME B16.1 and ASME B16.42 of the a

、ppropriate Size and Pressure Class for the rating marked on the identification plate. For NPS not listed in ASME B16.1 or B16.42, the following minimum wall thickness shall be used for listed materials: 7.5.2 As an alternative to Section 7.5.1, valve assemblies with valve bodies not meeting material

、 requirements or wall thickness for the appropriate Class of ASME B16.1 or B16.42 shall have the maximum allowable pressure determined using a pressure vessel proof test in accordance with UG-101 of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII (see Section 3.2). Documentation records of success

、ful proof test data shall be available at the manufacturers facility for inspection by the purchaser. 7.6 Bonnets, when required, shall be of the bolted design. 7.7 Dimensions shall be in accordance with Table 1, 2, 3, or 4. 8. WELDING 8.1 No welding allowed. Size Class 125/150 Class 250/300 NPS (DN

PRODUCTION TEST 10.1 Shell Test Each valve shall be hydrostatically pressure tested in accordance with Section 4 of MSS SP-61. 10.2 Seat Test Each valve shall be seat tested in accordance with MSS SP-61. Maximum permissible leakage for metal seated valves shall be

、 1.3 oz/min/NPS (40 ml/min/NPS). Resilient seated valves shall have no visible leakage for the duration of the seat test. 11. SHIPPING INFORMATION 11.1 Valve packing nuts may be loosened prior to shipment to extend packing life. These nuts may have to be adjusted after installation. 11.2 If packing

、nuts are loosened for shipment, there must be a tag attached indicating they have been loosened and include the proper procedure for tightening at installation. 11.3 Unless indicated otherwise, valves shall be shipped with covers to protect the raised faces of the flanges. 12. INSTALLATION 12.1 When

、 bolting cast iron valves to steel flanges, recommendations in Section 5.3.5 of ASME B16.5 and Section 9.5 of MSS SP-44 should be considered so as to prevent damage to the valve. 12.2 Valve packing will need to be adjusted when the valve is installed to prevent packing leakage.
