Change Notice: Changed to new MPAPS format; incorporated CEMS A-0 Part II Appendix into this spec; revised content of tables; revised Section 5.1; editorial changes. 1.0 SCOPE MPAPS A-0 consists of three major sections:

、Part I Chemical Composition of Standard Steels Part II System of Steel Classification for Standard Steels Part III Classification System for Heat Treated Steels This part of the specification defines a system of steel classification. Wherever practicable, this classification system is to be used on

、engineering drawings throughout the Company. In general, this specification is intended for non-heat-treated applications. Refer to Part I for more specific chemical composition requirements and steel cleanliness requirements for those steels covered in Part II. See Part III for specifying heat-trea

、l product supplied to the requirements of this specification must comply with the requirements of the MPAPS B-50 specification. 2.0 INTRODUCTION This specification describes a system of steel classification which allows for specifying steels on engineering drawings by codes which have or can produce

、 the desired mechanical properties. This system will be advantageous in a great majority of instances. The classification system is intended to apply in cases where options can by permitted at the manufacturing level. For sheet, structural products, and tubing, it is recommended that MPAPS A-6, A-10

、, A-43, A-44, or other applicable specification be used. 2.1 Objectives - The major objectives of this specification are as follows: 2.1.1 To reduce the number of steels used within the Company by permitting standardization of steels. For applications which require case hardening, requirements will be specified on the engineering drawing per MPAPS A-40, along with the material requirement using the applicable steel code per this

、 specification. Use of fully killed, fine grain steel is required, and sulfur is limited to 0.013% max. Welding Applications. For applications requiring welding, steels having 0.25% carbon or less are recommended. As the level of carbon in the steel increases, the weldability of the steel decreases,

、 and special precautions may be necessary to insure sound welds. When welding of cold worked steels (Table 2) is required, it should be noted that the minimum mechanical properties specified are obtained by cold work and will not be maintained in the welded area. If the weld area is in a critically

、stressed zone, refer to hot rolled minimum strength in Table 1 for property estimate. 5.2 The classification tables have 5 major headings as follows: 5.2.1 Column One: Code Each code used on an engineering drawing must have the same meaning throughout the Corporation. Therefore, the exact degree of

、freedom permitted at the manufacturing level is defined precisely in the table. 5.2.2 Column Two: Description Of Class The explanation in this column covers the general engineering requirements of the code. 5.2.3 Column Three: Minimum Expected Yield Strength The minimum expected yield strength (for

、the non-heat treated condition) is that of the lowest strength steel included in the code. This data is a guide for the engineer in the selection of a class to meet specific mechanical requirements. 5.2.4 Column Four: Recommended Steels The steels shown in this column cover the steels recommended by

、 Materials Engineering and are grouped on the basis of yield strength. The code, not the actual steel, should be shown on the engineering drawing. 5.2.5 Column Five: Allowable Alternates Allowable alternate materials for the carbon steel grades may be used with permission of the Quality Control Mana

、ger of the purchasing plant. These alternates must meet the minimum tensile properties and the restrictions of the code specified. When transverse properties or splitting strength are involved, sulfur and phosphorus will be restricted to the maximum of those of the recommended steels of the specifie

、d code. 5.2.6 Choice of Table 5.2.6.1 Table 1 should be used in all cases where the condition of the steel (e.g., hot rolled, cold finished or semi-finished) is optional and the minimum mechanical properties therein indicated are adequate. 5.2.6.2 Table 2 should be used only where higher mechanical

、properties, surface conditions, or other engineering considerations require the use of cold drawn steel only. Table 2 should not be used to obtain dimensional tolerances only. Where dimensional tolerance of cold drawn steel is desired and satisfactory mechanical properties can be met by a code in Ta

、ble 1, this code should be used and dimensional tolerances placed on the drawing. This will allow the use of hot rolled, turned, or turned and polished steel, provided the dimensions are adhered to. 41、ar on engineering drawings will be selected from the authorized codes listed in Tables 1, 2 or 3. The code will appear in the material block on engineering drawings as follows: Examples: Steel, 0-201, MPAPS A-0, Part II Steel, 2-410, MPAPS A-0, Part II 10.1 Ordering Steel by Navistar Classification

、The successful operation of this classification system depends upon, first, the selection of a code which will guarantee satisfactory engineering performances, and, second, the selection of a single steel from within this code which will best respond to all manufacturing operations, such as forging,

、 machining, welding, and case hardening. In order to effect Company-wide standardization of materials, steel should be selected from the “Recommended Steels” column within the code whenever practicable. 10.1.1 The Quality Control manager of the plant ordering the steel will make the selection of ind

、ividual steel, after consulting the various departments involved, from the standpoint of cost, inventory, processing, etc., to determine which steel within the code can be used to best advantage. The drawings and engineering specifications for individual parts should show only the code. 10.1.2 When

、more than one plant is involved in the production of a part, it is the responsibility of the Quality Control manager of the originating plant to obtain the approval from other plants on the selection of material. In general, it should be the plant having the most critical operation (usually case har

、dening or welding) who should decide upon the material which is most suitable for his operation. 10.1.3 The Quality Control manager is responsible for specifying the steel to be purchased. The purchase order must reference the specific steel grades defined in MPAPS A-0 Part 1. In no case should othe

、r steels be substituted without the approval of the plant quality control manager, as different types of steel, even though satisfactory from the engineering performance standpoint, may respond differently to the manufacturing operations. 10.2 Steel Ordered By Outside Suppliers Outside suppliers of

、semi-finished parts requiring welding, heat treating or machining in Navistar plants, must obtain approval of the specific steel from the Quality Control Manager of the purchasing plant. Outside suppliers furnishing finished parts may use any steel covered by the “Recommended Steels” column in Tables 1, 2 or 3 for the code shown on the drawing. The chemistry requirements of specific steel grades are defined in MPAPS A-0 Part 1. 11.0 TECHNICAL INFORMATION For further information related to the technical content of this specifica
