Change Notice: Updated to MPAPS format, added Charpy reference ASTM E23, combined with appendix, and editorial changes. 1.0 APPLICATION Cast steels offer a wide range of properties, achievable by heat treatment, and are readily weldable at most strength levels. They offer good impac

5、t resistance but are less castable and more expensive than the gray cast irons. 2.0 SCOPE This specification covers the Companys requirements for steel castings. 2.1 Restricted Chemical Substances Effective January 1, 2007, all product supplied to the requirements of this specification must comply w

6、ith the requirements of the MPAPS B-50 specification. 3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS Unless otherwise specified, the latest issue of all referenced standards shall apply. FEBRUARY 2016 Page 2 of 20 5.0 REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Mechanical Properties The primary intent of this specification is to obtain castings with controlled mechanical properties. (Refer to Section 5.2 for chemical requirements.) All cas

10、tings purchased to this specification will be supplied heat treated and have mechanical properties conforming to Tables I, IA and II. Other required heat treatments and/or properties will be specified on the drawing. All heat treat agreements and specifications will remain in effect until mutually c

11、hanged or terminated. 5.1.1 Castings - Normalized Or Normalized And Tempered Grades SC-0, SC-1, SC-2, and SC-3 will be either normalized or normalized and tempered, unless otherwise specified. Normalizing and tempering is required for Grades SC-4, SC-5, SC-6 SC-2R and SC-6R but these grades may be s

12、upplied quenched and tempered with approval of the controlling design engineering department, after consultation with the materials engineer. After quenching and tempering, they will meet the mechanical properties required for normalized and tempered castings, unless otherwise specified on the drawi

13、ng. Grades SC-2 and SC-6 will be assigned an R suffix designation when impact requirements are specified. Example SC-2R, SC-6R. 5.1.2 Castings - Quenched And Tempered Where quenching and tempering is required for Grades SC-3 through SC-6 the appropriate suffix letter shown in Tables I and IA (suffix

14、 letters A, B, C, or D) indicating the required mechanical properties will be added: Example: SC-6B. Note: A suffix letter need not be added to those castings which are quenched and tempered to meet normalized and tempered mechanical properties. See ”Castings - Normalized or Normalized and Tempered”

15、 above. 5.1.2.1 Quenched castings will be tempered at 425C (800F) minimum, except those used in abrasion resistant applications. Castings must be in a homogeneous state, achieved by either a normalizing operation or a longer austenitizing time, prior to quenching and tempering, unless otherwise spec

16、ified. However, when castings are specified quenched and tempered, they are not required to meet the mechanical properties specified for normalized or normalized and tempered castings, prior to quenching and tempering. The purchaser and supplier will agree upon the necessary process and material to

17、assure mechanical properties, machinability and weldability requirements are achieved. 5.1.3 Tensile Requirements The tensile requirements specified for test bars pertain to standard tensile test specimens machined from keel blocks or test coupons having a thickness of 25 mm (1 inch). Casting tensil

18、e requirements will be determined on tensile test specimens taken from the center of sections up to 25 mm (1 inch) thick, inclusive and from the mid-radius of sections over 25 mm (1 inch) thick. See “Methods of Test”, Section 7.0. 5.1.3.1 If the foundry anticipates or finds that it cannot meet the s

19、trength requirements throughout the casting as determined above, the foundry will request the controlling engineering department to identify significant sections on the drawing. When sections of a casting are deemed significant for reasons of stress, function or reliability, the controlling design e

20、ngineering department must designate the location of the significant section or sections on the drawing. The purpose of this procedure is to clearly establish that strength (or corresponding hardness) determinations be made in those required areas. NUMBER: MPAPS E-2 TITLE: Steel Castings REVISION: 1

22、ll be met on finished machined surfaces. Therefore, it may be necessary to control hardness at or near the casting surfaces to a range different than specified herein, to compensate for stock removal. Navistar Engineering and supplier will agree upon the different hardness ranges. The conversion of

23、hardness to tensile strength will be according to the Hardness Conversion Chart in ASTM E-140. FEBRUARY 2016 Page 5 of 20 5.1.5 Impact Test Requirements (Grade SC-2R and SC-6R) These grades of steel castings purchased to this specification will meet the following impact test requirements unless otherwise specified. See “Methods of Test”, Section 7.0. 5.1.5.1 The

34、 requirements for standard and sub-size Charpy V-Notch specimens are shown in Table II. The standard size specimen will be used except where the section thickness does not permit machining a 10 mm by 10 mm specimen. In such cases, sub-size specimens as listed will be used. The sub-size specimen sele

35、cted will be as large as the particular section thickness permits. 5.1.5.2 Nil Ductility Transition Temperature - Optional Method SC-2R and SC-6R Grades steel castings will have a maximum nil ductility transition temperature (NDTT) of -34C (-30F). This requirement may be used in lieu of the Charpy V

36、-Notch impact requirement for material with section thickness 15.9 mm (0.625 inch) and greater. TABLE II - GRADES SC-2R however, grinding, machining, chipping and oxy-fuel gouging may be used. 5.6.1.2.1 Careful visual inspection of the prepared area to assure complete removal of defects is normally

37、adequate. However, the use of magnetic particle or dye penetrant inspection of the cavity may be desirable or be specified for specific castings or areas of castings. 5.6.1.2.2 Before welding, the prepared cavity and the immediate area will be clean of all residue from the oxy-fuel or arc-air gougin

38、g, and free of oil, water, heavy scale, etc. which could adversely affect the quality of the weld repair. 5.6.1.2.3 All side walls of prepared cavities will be a minimum of 20 degrees from a line normal to the casting surface so that side wall fusion can be obtained during welding. 5.6.1.3 Arc weldi

39、ng will be used for all repair welds in steel castings. Shielded metal-arc, gas metal-arc and flux-cored arc welding processes are satisfactory; prior approval must be obtained for other arc welding processes. 5.6.1.4 Electrode selection will be such that the properties of the resulting weld will be

40、 at least equal to the specified minimum properties of the casting. 5.6.1.5 Areas of castings that have been repair welded will be inspected to the same quality level, using the same method of inspection as specified or used for nonrepair welded castings. 5.6.1.6 Only personnel who have proven their

41、 ability through tests or other effective means will be used for preparing and repair welding of steel castings. 5.6.2 Other Machining errors or casting defects encountered during machining may be weld repaired only after a procedure has been developed, suitable for the casting grade involved and ap

42、proved by the controlling design engineering department. 6.0 QUALITY 6.1 General Castings will be clean and free of severe rust, corrosion and all scale. Unless otherwise specified, superficial rust and corrosion is permissible but surface finish texture must be satisfactory for the intended use. Ca

43、stings will not be covered with any substance which hides defects nor will they be painted unless it is indicated on the drawing. Casting suppliers will not subcontract castings without approval of the Navistar Purchasing, Engineering and/or Supplier Quality Manager. NUMBER: MPAPS E-2 TITLE: Steel C

45、ree from injurious defects. They will meet the following requirements for soundness, unless otherwise specified. See “Sampling Procedure” (Section 6.3) and “Methods of Test” (Section 7.0). 6.2.1 Castings will exhibit a surface quality of machined surfaces which is suitable for intended use. 6.2.2 In

46、 general, soundness of the casting except item (1) above will meet ASTM E446, severity level 3, using Vol. II reference radiographs (1 MV X-rays and Iridium 192 radiation). Soundness may alternately be checked according to former ASTM E71 where Class 3 is the acceptable level. This definition does n

47、ot imply that radiographic certification is required unless so stated, but rather that a particular quality level is expected. For critical castings, soundness should be verified by sectioning sample castings from production. Ultrasonic inspection may be substituted for radiographic inspection upon

48、agreement between purchaser and supplier. 6.2.3 The level of magnetic particle indications in areas other than machined surfaces, tapped holes and identified casting areas of highest importance, will not exceed the acceptance standards for the general level of magnetic particle inspection shown in T

49、able VII. 6.2.4 Casting areas where soundness is of the highest importance due to the established engineering requirements will be identified on the engineering part drawing. The symbols shown below specify that radiographic or magnetic particle inspection control is required to meet the following acceptance standards: 6.2.4.1 RG Radiographic Inspection Control Sound
