4、egulatory limits prior to use. 1.0 APPLICATION This specification covers the decorative electroplated chromium used on interior or exterior plastics. These parts may be exterior grilles, light bezels, nameplates, interior ornaments, knobs, or similar applications. 2.0 SCOPE This specification covers
5、 the material requirements of the base plastic, plating requirements, performance requirements, and quality of the finished part, qualification, source approval and quality control. 2.1 Restricted Chemical Substances Effective January 1, 2007, all product supplied to the requirements of this specifi
6、cation must comply with the requirements of the MPAPS B-50 specification. 3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS Unless otherwise specified, the latest issue of all referenced standards shall apply. 9、PLASTIC The general plastic family from which the unplated plastic part is molded shall be compatible with the particular electroplating process used by the electroplater. The plastic part shall be free from visible molding defects, sink marks, weld or flow lines. Unless otherwise specified on the p
10、art drawing, the significant surface finish shall be equal to or better than the No. 2 diamond finish as found in the SPI-SPE Mold Finish Comparison Kit.* Where necessary, the plastic parts shall be stress relieved prior to plating. * Available from D-M-E Corporation, 1975 N. 17th Street, Melrose Pa

Systems other than those specified which demonstrate satisfactory per
12、formance may be approved by Navistar Integrated Product Engineering (IPD). 14、 B-764 as appropriate. The plating thickness is the minimum value permitted, determined at specified check points (“C-Points“) on the engineering drawing as designated by a Materials Engineer. (2) Semi-bright nickel is defined as a nickel plate containing less than 0.005% sulfur; bright nickel conta
15、ins 0.04% sulfur minimum. The semi-bright and bright layers can be differentiated with an etchant consisting of one part nitric acid (specific gravity - 1.42) and four parts glacial acetic acid. (3) Satylite finish which creates a low gloss as a result of a mechanical treatment on the semi-bright ni
16、ckel and a chemical treatment on the bright nickel. (4) The microporous chrome layer shall exhibit a minimum of 10,000 pores/cm2 as determined by the copper deposition (Dubpernell) method as described in ASTM B 456 or a minimum of 2000 pores/cm2 as determined by active corrosion sites after testing
17、as described in ASTM B 456. SEPTEMBER 2016 Page 3 of 6 4.2 Performance Requirements 4.2.1 Thermal Cycling and Corrosion Test: Exterior and Interior Parts 4.2.1.1 Method -CASS testing as per ASTM B368 test method and procedure. Plated parts shall be subjected to three complete cycles consisting
19、 of the following sequence: 1) 82 3C (180 5F) for 2 hours. 2) 22 3C (72 5F) for 1 hour. 3) -34 1C (-30 2F) for 2 hours. 4) 22 3C (72 5F) for 1 hour. 4.2.1.1.1 Rinse parts with tap water after each complete thermal cycle and examine for defects. 4.2.1.1.2 Perform CASS corrosion test for 40 hours (ext
20、erior only)* after the three thermal cycles. * Interior plated parts; CASS test for 4 hours at the completion of the three thermal cycles. 4.2.1.2 Required There shall be no evidence of plating and/or plastic failure due to cracks, crazing, blistering, corrosion, and/or loss of plating adhesion. Cor
21、rosion failure shall be considered to have occurred if one or more of the listed conditions develops. 4.2.1.2.1 Corrosion products occurring in more than 2% of the grids* over the entire significant surface area. *Surfaces to be examined shall be divided into 6.4 mm (1/4 in) squares with lines havin
22、g maximum width of 0.13 mm (0.005 in). 4.2.1.2.2 Corrosion products larger than 1.6 mm (1/16 in) in diameter. 4.2.1.2.3 Surface pitting corrosion which contains an area of more than 10 spots 1.2 mm (0.048 in) in diameter or larger in any grid section. 4.2.1.2.4 Corrosion products occurring in more t
23、han 15% of the grids in any square (10 grids by 10 grids) covering significant surface area. 4.2.2 Thermal Shock Test: Exterior Parts A separate sample shall be subjected to three complete cycles consisting of the following sequence: 1) 85C (185F) for 30 minutes. 2) -34C (-30F) ethylene glycol/H2O b
24、ath for 30 minutes. 4.2.2.1 Parts shall be transferred immediately from one environment to the other with no time allowed between cycles. There shall be no evidence of plating and/or plastic failure due to cracks, crazing, blistering, corrosion, and loss of plating adhesion. 4.2.2.2 For plating proc
25、ess validation, Navistar will require a -70C part stress test to attempt in induce delamination copper to plastic, or a sub-surface plastic failure. Parts or sections of parts at areas of high radius, of marginal copper thickness, or other points of interest will be soaked for a minimum of 12 hours
26、to look for delamination failures. 4.2.3 Class 2 Exterior Parts 4.2.3.1 Usage 4.2.3.1.1 For exterior applications, if the class is not specified in the material note on the engineering drawing, Class 1 exterior requirements will be assumed applicable. Class 2 exterior requirements should be reserved
27、 for large surface area parts or parts with complex geometry or deep draws. SEPTEMBER 2016 Page 4 of 6 4.2.3.2 Performance Requirements 4.2.3.2.1 Class 2 Exterior components shall conform to all the requirements of General Exterior components as well as the additional requirements in 4.2.3.2.2
29、. 4.2.3.2.2 Thermal Shock Test: Class 2 Exterior Parts Prepare ten (10) samples parts using the plating requirements of General Exterior parts. Test each part using the Class 2 Thermal Shock test procedures and inspect for failures. If plastic to plastic failures are seen, testing shall be repeated
30、utilizing the Class 2 Exterior plating requirements. Failure reports for test(s) shall be submitted to Navistar Materials and Navistar Engineering for evaluation. Parts shall be subjected to the following cycles: Cycle 1 1) -40C (-40F) for 2 hours 2) 82C (180F) for 1 hour 3) -40C (-40F) for 2 hours
31、4) 82C (180F) for 1 hour 5) Inspect part for failures, mark failure points with temperature. Cycle 2 1) -50C (-58F) for 2 hours 2) 82C (180F) for 1 hour 3) -50C (-58F) for 2 hours 4) 82C (180F) for 1 hour 5) Inspect part for failures, mark failure points with temperature. Required: There shall be no
32、 evidence of plastic to plastic delamination on any test samples. Production Certification Upon determination by Navistar Materials Engineering, Navistar Integrated Product Development Engineering and the supplier that parts require class 2 exterior plating thicknesses, all production parts will be
33、expected to pass the class 2 thermal shock test with no evidences of plastic to plastic delamination. 4.2.4 Adhesion After completion of the satisfactory number of prescribed thermal cycles and corrosion test, as well as the thermal shock test, parts passing these tests shall be scribed with an “X“
34、through the plating to the plastic surface. A strip of adhesive tape (#710 Scotch Tape - 3M Company or equivalent) 1.9 cm (3/4 in) wide, shall be applied to the scribed “X“. The tape shall be pulled at 90 to the surface and the part examined for lifting of the electroplate. Evidence of loss of adhes
35、ion shall be cause for rejection. 5.0 QUALITY The plated part shall have a bright or satin finish as specified and a uniform reflective finish. Each plated deposit shall be adherent and free from cracks and foreign material (except for the post nickel strike and the resulting microporous chromium).

SEPTEMBER 2016 Page 5 of 6 from stains, pinholes, nodules, or any other defects which affect the overall appearance of the plating or its ability to meet the requirements of this specification. 6.0 QUALIFICATION Engineering qualification of
38、 sources is required in advance of production shipments. Samples shall be accompanied by test data certifying that all requirements of the specification have been met. Suppliers shall submit samples for approval of finish, luster, color and appearance to the Navistar Industrial Design Group. Upon ap
39、proval, styling master samples denoting the minimum level of acceptable appearance quality shall be developed and retained by the supplier and the quality department of each using NAVISTAR facility. 6.1 Quality Control Plan A Quality Control Plan for products supplied to the requirements of this spe
40、cification will be established by mutual agreement between NAVISTAR and the supplier. Unless specific exception is noted, the following characteristics, where applicable*, shall be included in the plan as features for management by statistical process control.* * Other characteristics for inclusion
41、in the control plan may be specified on the engineering drawing and/or purchase order. * See NAVISTAR Engineering Design Standard A-16 7.0 SOURCE APPROVAL AND QUALITY CONTROL 7.1 Supplier Requirements All suppliers to International Truck and Engine are required to be registered to ISO 9001 Quality S
42、ystem Requirements. International will also accept TS-16949 registration as long as the supplier can also fulfill all AIAG PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) documentation and approval requirements. Suppliers must maintain their certification with an accredited registrar and must furnish copies
43、 of registration certificates to their International Corporate Buyer upon request. 7.2 Approval Parts supplied against contracts or purchase orders citing this specification shall be equivalent in all respects to those samples which were approved by the purchaser. No changes in formulation or proces
44、sing practices are permitted without approval. In the event that changes in material, properties, processing practices, construction, color, or labeling of the product are required, the supplier shall notify Navistar Integrated Product Development, Purchasing, and Supplier Development of the propose
45、d change(s). Test data indicating conformance to all requirements of this specification, test samples, and new or amended or updated Material Safety Data Sheet(s) (MSDS), in accordance with CFR Title 29, Part 1910 shall be submitted with the request for change. 7.3 Process Control The supplier shall
46、 either, perform and report results of tests on specific lots of parts produced using ISO 9001 or TS-16949 guidelines, or provide statistical evidence of the lot having been produced in a state of statistical control and with a process capable of providing all required properties. SEPTEMBER 2016 Page 6 of 6 and the plant metallurgist and/or the quality control manager of the using International plant may determine testing and reporting requirements on specific products. 8.0 SHIPPING, PACKING AND IDENTIFICATION Loading, packing, and identification shall be in accordance with NAVISTAR Supplier Packing and Shipping Standard D-13.
