26、ding, loads sufficient to cause yielding of theinstaller-furnished vent and drain tubing.(c) In addition to methods specified in (b) , for applications where theconnection will not normally be in contact with seawater, a socketweld using a T by 2T minimum fillet in accordance with P-14 ofMIL-STD-22

27、will be acceptable.3 .3.16.1 High pressure cooler vent and drain egress . Forapplications , waterbox vents and drain connections shall be ledthe waterbox flange or tube sheet.high pressureout by means of3.3.17 Pressure gauge connections . Connections for pressure gauges shall beprovided at inlets an

28、d outlets of coolant and cooled fluid sides when specified(see 6.2). Gauge connections shall conform to 3.3.16.3.3.1S Supports. Coolers shall be provided with supports for securing to afoundation or parent machine. The means of support shall be independent ofconnecting piping. For coolers designed t

29、o be supported from a vertical structuresuch as a bulkhead, the supports shall be such that bolts in shear will notconstitute the primary means of support. Coolers shall not be supported by platesor brackets in such manner that the primsry means of support is obtained from thebolts that secure the j

30、oint between shell-end flange, tube sheet, and waterboxflange.3.3.19 Foundation bolt hole allowances. The drilling of foundation boltholes in cooler feet, other than for close-allowance bushing application (see3.3.20), shall meet the following criteria:(a) For bolt sizes of 3/4-inch diameter and sms

31、ller, the bolt holeshall be not larger than bolt diameter plus 1/32 inch.(b) For bolt sizes larger than 3/4-inch diameter, the bolt hole shsllbe not larger than bolt dismeter plus 1/16 inch.3.3.20 Provision for shell expansion relative to supDorts. If the distancebetween cooler supports exceeds 24 i

32、nches , provision shsll be made for expansionand contraction of the shell with respect to its supports. The use of elongatedor oversized bolt holes in support feet is not, by itself, an acceptable method.The following are” acceptable methods:(a) Providing freedom for one end of the shell to move in

33、the axialdirection by means of elongated holes in the foot of that shellsupport, with shell end motion in the other two planes beingrestricted by use of close allowance collared bushing (collar maybe integral or separate from the bushing) assemble over andrigidly bolted down by the foundation bolts

34、at that end. Whenthis method of support is used, the other (fixed) support and itsfoundation bolts shall carry che entire load clue to high-impactshock in the direction longitudinal of the shell .14Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-(b)

35、Providing freedomdirection by useMIL-C-15730M(SH)for one end of the shell to move in the axialat that end of the cooler of a support designedto flex as the shell expands or contracts. When this method ofsupport is used, the other (fixed) support and its foundationbolts shall carry the entire load du

36、e to high-impact shock in thedirection of longitudinal of the shell. Where coolers have castshells or shell hubs, the flexible support may be a separate piecebolted to the cast shell end.3.3.21 Provision for shell expansion relative to tubes. For fixed bundlecoolers (stationary tube sheets at both e

37、nds), a shell expansion joint shall beprovided to compensate for differential expansion between shell and tubes when thetube bundle length (back-to-back of tube sheets) is greater than 18 inches. Theexpansion joint shall be located between one support and the shell end flange.3.3.22 Gasket applicati

38、on. For liquid side applications of 200 lb/in2design pressure and less, flat gaskets may be used unless otherwise specified (see6.2). O-ring gaskets shall be used for design pressures greater than 200 lb/in2gauge. Use of blind gaskets or packings (those not replaceable withoutdestructive disassembly

39、) is prohibited. Use of fluorocarbon rubber O-rings orgaskets on the fresh water side of submarine coolers is prohibited.3.3.23 Flat gaskets. Flat gaskets shall be 1/16 inch thick. Coolers shallhave adequate gasket width provided under waterbox partitions, and this gasket -width shall be not less th

40、an 5/16 inch, unless otherwise specified (see 6.2).Flat gaskets shall conform to the material tables, with the following exceptions:(a) For type I cooler applications where design pressure does notexceed 100 lb/in2, sfithetic rubber in accordance with MIL-G-1149,type II, class 5, may be used.(b) For

41、”type I cooler applications where temperature of metal incontact with the gasket will exceed 250 degrees Fahrenheit (“F),gasket material shall be in accordance with MIL-G-24696 unlessotherwise specified (see 6.2).3.3.24 O-ring gaskets. O-ring gaskets for application in fresh water,seawater or standa

42、rd lubricating and petroleum hydraulic oil shall be inaccordance with MIL-R-83248, class 1 (class 2 for threaded adapters and plugs)except O-rings on the fresh water side of submarine coolers shall be in accordancewithMIL-R-83461, MIL-G-2161O type 1, or as otherwise specified (see 6.2). O-ringsegmen

43、ts for sealing under waterbox partitions shall be integral with theperipheral O-ring.3.3.25 Selection of rubber packing materials. Rubber packing materialsshall be selected to meet the temperature demands of the application, and becompatible with the working fluids. Packing rings conforming to class

44、 5 ofMIL-G-1149 have good compatibility with petroleum base lubricating oils.3.3.26 Drawings.
