4、s of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers a 16- to 20-pound dry weight capacity automatic combination washer-extractor for use aboard submarines. 1.2 Classification. Washer-extractors are of the following types, as specified (see 6.2). Type I Shock qualified (see

18、Unless otherwise noted herein or in the contract, in the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein (except for related specification sheets), the text of this document takes precedence. 19、lations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first article inspection (see 6.3) in accordance with 4.2. 3.2 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, or envi

20、ronmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs. 3.3 Materials. 3.3.1 Structure. Frame, base, and strength members shall b

21、e constructed of malleable iron, ductile iron, or steel, and shall be hot-dipped galvanized or primed and painted. Gray cast iron or other brittle materials shall not be used for these parts. 3.3.2 Shell. Unless otherwise specified, shell shall be made of corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with

22、 ASTM A167, type 302 or 304. Front of the shell shall be corrosion-resistant steel or ferrous metal with corrosion-resisting metal liners on the side exposed to the washing solution. The shell shall be provided with a corrosion-resistant steel door frame. 3.3.3 Cylinder. The cylinder shall be made o

23、f corrosion-resistant steel in accordance with ASTM A167, type 302 or 304. The driving trunnion and spider shall be the same material as the cylinder, or ferrous metal protected by either hot-dip galvanizing or a corrosion-resistant coating. 3.3.4 Cabinet. The cabinet shall be made of corrosion-resi

24、stant steel in accordance with ASTM A167, type 302 or 304. 3.3.5 Metal joints. Rivets, bolts, screws, nuts, and washers shall be of steel, except when brass or corrosion-resistant steel is fastened, in which case they shall be of brass or corrosion-resistant steel. Where dissimilar metals are fasten

25、ed, rivets, bolts, screws, nuts, and washers shall be galvanically compatible with materials being joined. Electrodes or welding rods used for welding shall deposit material similar to the base metal of the parts being welded. Welded steel parts shall be galvanized after completion of welding in acc

26、ordance with ASTM A123/A123M. Nuts subject to vibration or shock shall be self-locking. Drill point screws are prohibited. Spacing of fasteners shall provide strength, tightness, and rattle-free performance. Convenient access shall be provided to fasteners of parts requiring service. Provided by IHS

Parts in contact with the wash solution shall be bronze or corrosion-resistant steel. The following materials shall be used: Corrosion-resistant steel, in accord

28、ance with ASTM A269, Grade TP 302 or 304. Brass, in accordance with ASTM B43, Grade A. Pipes: Copper, in accordance with ASTM B75. Fittings: Bronze, in accordance with ASTM B61 or ASTM B62. Cast bronze, in accordance with ASTM B61. Valves: Plastic, in accordance with the manufacturers commercial pra

29、ctice. 3.3.7 Drain assembly. The drain assembly shall be made of the following materials: Cast bronze, in accordance with ASTM B61. Drain valve body: Plastic, in accordance with the manufacturers commercial practice. Cast bronze, in accordance with ASTM B61 or ASTM B62. Drain fittings: Plastic, in a

30、ccordance with manufacturers commercial practice. Corrosion-resistant steel, in accordance with ASTM A269, Grade TP 302 or 304. Brass, in accordance with ASTM B43 Grade A. Copper, in accordance with ASTM B75. Drain piping: Rubber hose, in accordance with the manufacturers commercial practice. 3.3.8

31、Restricted materials. The washer-extractor shall be free from asbestos, wood, and cadmium materials. 3.4 Configuration. The washer-extractor shall be front loading, automatic, shell and cylinder (open pocket) type with a rotating and reversing action about its horizontal axis. Each machine shall con

32、sist of a remote control box, a washer-extractor enclosed within a cabinet, and the necessary controls, valves, motor, and appurtenances for automatically washing, rinsing, and extracting clothing as specified herein. The remote control box shall consist of the automatic program control, and all oth

33、er components and external cabling required to control washer-extractor operation from a remote location. 3.4.1 Special design requirements. The washer-extractor shall be so constructed that it can be readily disassembled into sections or parts that can be passed through a 30-inch diameter by 60-inc

34、h long cylinder and reassembled with a minimum of effort in the submarine laundry space. Cutting of parts by torch or similar means to accomplish disassembly at the site, and reassembly of parts by welding, riveting, or similar method shall not be permitted. Internal wiring to components requiring d

35、isconnection during disassembly shall use plug type connectors to allow for easy removal and installation of component parts without the use of special tools. Not less than 50 percent of the original hardware and sound dampening material shall be provided with each machine as spare material to aid r

36、eassembly. 3.4.1.1 Capacity. The washer-extractor dry weight load capacity shall be not less than 16 pounds and shall be not greater than 20 pounds preload cotton clothing (see 6.2). 3.4.2 Size. Excluding appendages such as the door handle, knobs, etc, the washer-extractor overall dimensions shall b

37、e not greater than 24 inches wide by 26 inches deep by 34 inches high. 3.4.3 Weight. The washer-extractor weight, including controls, remote control box, and appurtenances, shall be not greater than 460 pounds. 3.4.4 Water consumption. Water consumption shall be not greater than 50 gallons for the m

The washer-extractor shall be mounted to a deck foundation. The remote control box shall be capable of being both shelf mounted and

39、bulkhead mounted (see 3.4.14.1). Type I and Type II washer-extractors shall be provided with a minimum of four bolt holes located on the machine base for securing the unit to a deck foundation. Bolt holes shall be accessible from the front and rear of the machine. The Type I washer-extractor and rem

40、ote control box bolt holes and bolts shall keep the washer-extractor secured to the deck and the remote control box secured to the shelf or bulkhead when subjected to the shock requirements specified in 3.5.5. Type II washer-extractor bolt holes shall be sized for a 58-inch bolt. 3.4.6 Shell. Except

41、 for required shell openings, the shell shall be watertight. When closed or in place, the door, drain valve, water inlet valves, cylinder shaft, water level sensor, and overflow connection shall be installed to provide a watertight connection to the shell. The shell shall be rigid to prevent distort

42、ion, rattling, or objectionable vibration under normal shipboard operation. Reinforcement shall be provided where necessary to properly support attachments. Shell seams shall not pass through the drain valve opening. 3.4.6.1 Shell openings. The shell shall have openings for a door, drain valve, wate

43、r inlet valves, cylinder shaft, water level sensor, and overflow connection. No other openings shall be provided. 3.4.7 Cylinder. The cylinder shall be rigid to prevent distortion and failure from stresses caused during the extraction cycle at the maximum dry weight load capacity. Perforations in th

44、e cylinder shall be sized and spaced for efficient washing, rinsing, and extraction. Perforations shall be free from burrs or imperfections that can damage clothing. The washer-extractor shall be constructed so the cylinder can be replaced. 3.4.8 Cabinet. The top of the washer-extractor cabinet shal

45、l be round. Front and rear panels shall be completely removable by means of mechanical fasteners in order to access the front and back of the unit for installation, maintenance, and repair. Metal-to-metal contact between framing, sheet metal, and other items that may cause rattling or a noise short

46、shall be isolated by the use of sound dampening material. 3.4.9 Door. The shell shall be fitted with a round door mounted on heavy duty hinges, complete with neoprene gasket and heavy duty latch to ensure watertightness when the door is closed. When the door is fitted with a window, the window shall

47、 be made of tempered glass of a quality and thickness to prevent damage under normal operation. The glass shall be sealed and capable of ready replacement. 3.4.10 Drain valve. The drain valve shall have a resilient seat and shall be fitted at the lowest point of the shell. The valve shall be normall

48、y open. The drain valve shall be 2 inches IPS (Iron Pipe Size) and shall be located on the lower back of the machine not more than 6 inches off of the center of the machine. The center height of the drain outlet location shall be a minimum of 5 inches above the bottom of machine. 3.4.11 Piping. Hot

49、and cold water supply piping, valves, and fittings shall have a working pressure of 100 pounds per square inch. 3.4.11.1 Inlet valves. Hot and cold water valves shall be inch male NPT (National (American) Standard Pipe Taper) thread in accordance with ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 and shall be located on the lower left side of the machine when facing the back of the washer-extractor.
