This specification covers the requirements for the 5-inch, 54- or 62-caliber steel cartridgecase, herein referred to as the “cartridge case.“ 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 General. 20、ons unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 First article sample. When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first articleinspection (see 6.3) in accordance with 4.3. 3.2 Characteristics. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the cartr

21、idge caseshall conform to the requirements specified herein and on Drawing 7263988 (see 4.5.1). The cartridge case shall show no evidence of cracks i

22、n any portionof the case when subjected to the high stress expansion test of 4.5.2. 3.4 Hardness (M102). The cartridge cases shall conform to the hardness value for region D of figure 1shall be as specified in table I. Values for regions A1, A2, B, and C, as shown in figure 1, are advisory(see 4.5.3

23、). 3.5 Tensile strength and elongation (M103). The yield strength and elongation values for thecartridge case shall be as specified in table I in the regions shown in figure 1 (see 4.5.4 and 4.5.5). TABLE I. Hardness and tensile strength. The case shall be zinc plated in accordance with ASTM B 633, Type IIe

25、xcept that the exterior thickness of the protective coating shall be between 0.0003 inch and 0.0008 inchand the interior plating thickness shall be 0.00015 inch minimum. This requirement does not apply withinone inch of the head. Thinner plating at the inert standoff contact points is acceptable pro

26、vided there areno more than nine. The protective coating shall show no corrosion of basis metal. The size and frequencyof the black corrosion products of zinc shall not exceed that of the established standard of 0.2400 (see4.5.6). After testing, white corrosion products of zinc that do not interfere

27、 with chambering of thecartridge case are acceptable. 3.7 Chamber gage (M105). Each cartridge case shall fully chamber in a Navy-approved chamber gage(see 4.5.7). 3.8 Ballistics (M106). Each cartridge case shall load, eject, show no splits, and otherwise performsatisfactorily when ballistically test

28、ed (see 4.5.8). 3.8.1 Case extraction (M107). Cartridge cases tested under automatic and semiautomatic action shallbe ejected and shall in no way cause the weapon to cease firing. When fired in the single shot mode, thecartridge case shall be capable of being extracted by manual operation of the ext

29、raction system. Note: The term “ejected“ means that the cartridge case is thrown clear of the breech, permitting loadingof the subsequent round. The term “extract“ means that the cartridge case is loosened and pulled to therear, by the normal operation of the extraction system, sufficiently to permi

Item identification marking of all cartridge cases shall be in accordance withthe contract or purchase order (see 6.2). 3.10 Workmanship (M108). The cartridge case shall be produced in such a manner as to ensurecompliance with all the requireme

33、nts of this specification and the applicable associated specifications. There shall be no burrs, cracks, tears or other imperfections of manufacture, which in the opinion of theGovernment inspector, may adversely affect either the assembly, functioning, or handling of the product. (Flutes, draw mark

34、s, loopers, slug marks, and pits shall not exceed 10 percent of the calculated wallthickness in the affected area nor be of sufficient magnitude to cause minimum or maximum dimensions tobe exceeded. Note: Grain orientation directionality is produced by rolling. A looper is a visible pattern of this

35、grainorientation extended by drawing. There shall be no flutes, pitting, draw marks or loopers in the region between the base and a circum-ferential line 3 inches from the base of the cartridge case.) The only acceptable surface defects on theinterior base-to-wall radius are those exemplified by the

36、 sample board approved by the contracting activity(see 4.5.1). 4. VERIFICATION 4.1 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified asfollows: a. First article inspection (see 4.3) b. Quality conformance inspection (see 4.4) 4.2 Classification of characteris

37、tics. The characteristics verified by the tests and examinationsspecified herein and in the detail inspection are classified as critical, major or minor in accordance withDOD-STD-2101. Requirements for critical characteristics are identified by the symbol (C), and majorcharacteristics by the symbol

38、M). The number following the classification symbol indicates the serialnumber of the characteristic. Requirements which are not annotated with a classification code areclassified as minor.4.3 First article inspection. The first article sample shall consist of 158 cartridge cases and shall beexamine

39、d and tested in accordance with table II. The cartridge cases shall be the same as for regularproduction and manufactured under the same conditions as the production lot. Further production ofcartridge cases by the contractor, prior to the approval of the first article, shall be at the contractors r

40、isk.4.3.1 First article sample acceptance/rejection. Acceptance or rejection of the first article sampleshall be in accordance with table II. For those where the acceptance criteria is not shown, any failure tomeet the requirements shall be cause for rejection of the sample. 4.4 Quality conformance

41、inspection. Quality conformance inspection shall consist of all theexaminations and tests as specified in table II.4.4.1 Lot size. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order (see 6.2), the production lotshall consist of 10,000 cartridge cases plus those required for test purposes.

Failure of any of the additional samples to meet the ejection requirement shall because for rejection of the lot. 4.5 Methods of inspection. 4.5.1 Visual and dimensional examination.

47、The charges shall be visually and dimensionallyexamined for conformance to requirements of 3.2, 3.9 and 3.10. Four-power (4X) magnification may beused for examination of defects. 4.5.2 High stress expansion test. Each cartridge case in the lot (see 4.4.1), after heat treatment butprior to tapering,

Cartridge cases shall be prepared and tested in accordance with ASTM E 18 todetermine conformance to 3.7. The hardness shall be checked at the locations shown in Figure 1. Hardness readings shall be taken on each of two sections cut longitudinally from diametrically opposite
