REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Guide sample. Samples, when furnished, are solely for guidance and information to the contra
24、ctor (see 6.3). Variations from this specification may appear in the sample, in which case this specification shall govern. 3.1.1 Government loaned property. Hubs, when furnished by the Government, shall be used only for making the contractors working dies. The contractors sampling and embossing die
25、s shall be tooled and polished to remove dents, scratches and all other imperfections. 3.1.2 Approved contractor sample. When hubs are not available, all requirements specified in the applicable specification sheet and as exhibited by the approved contractors sample shall apply (see 6,4). Jc 3.2 Fir
26、st article. When specified, (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first article inspection, in accordance with 4.3. 3.3 Materials. 3.3.1 Base cloth. The cloth used for the sleeve device background ahd for covering the top surface of the shoulder boards shall conform to the requirements of type I
27、, class 3, 16.5 oz., of MIL-C-82252 or type 1, class 2, 16.0 oz. of MIL-C-16290. The color shall match Blue 3346. 3.3.2 Cloth, lining. The cloth used for lining the underside of the shoulder boards shall conform to the requirements for classes 1, 2 or 3 of 4 Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduct

The lace used for striping shall conform to the requirements for type II, classes 1 through 5, style A or type II
29、, classes 1 through 5 style B, sub-style B2, of MIL-L-17507. 3.3.4 Nylon braid. The braid used for striping shall be 1/8 inch wide weighing 9.0 to 10.0 ounces per gross (144) yards. It shall be made of 2 ply mercerized cotton stuffer ends with an outer covering of nylon. The braid shall have one vel
30、lum consisting of 21 stuffer ends (minimum) with an additional 7 stuffer ends (minimum) on each side of the vellum. The outer covering shall completely cover the stuffer ends and shall be made with 8 carriers (minimum) with 2 ends of nylon per carrier. Testing shall be as specified in 4.4.1. * 3.3.4
31、.1 Color. The nylon braid shall be dyed shade Gold 3904, to approximately match the metallic embroidery material specified in 3.3.5. The use of sulphur dyes is prohibited. * 3.3.4.1.1 Colorfastness. The dyed braid shall show colorfastness to light, crocking and wet-dry cleaning equal to or better th
32、an the standard sample when tested as specified in 4.4.1. As a limit of acceptability or when no standard sample is available, the braid shall show good fastness to light, crocking and wet-dry cleaning when tested as specified in 4.4.1. * 3.3.5 Embroidery material (metallic). The metallic embroidery
33、 material shall conform to type III, classes 8 and 10 of MIL-E-17568. 3.3.6 Base Metal. * 3.3.6.1 Anchor and star - Types II and III, class 4. The base metal used for the gold plated devices specified in 3.10.1.2 and 3.10.2.2. shall be either yellow brass or red brass. The yellow brass shall be of t
34、he following composition: 64% to 68% copper, remainder zinc, with a 0.35% (max.) of other elements. The red brass shall be composed as follows: 84% copper, remainder zinc, with a 0.25% (max.) of other elements. The brass base metal shall be free from pits, (including red oxide), dents, deep scratche
35、s, cracks, and foreign matter that will not be removed in subsequent processing. Testing shall be performed as specified in 4.4.1. * 3.3.6.2 Star - Type I, class 6. The base metal used for the gold plated star device specified in 3.11.2 shall be made from a commercial quality copper base alloy. The
36、finished insignia shall have a thickness of 0.020 (+ 0.001) inch. The brass base metal shall be roll polished, free from pits, dents, cracks, deep scratches, and foreign matter that will not be removed in subsequent processing. Testing shall be performed as specified in 4.4.1. * 3.3.7 Gold-plated ma
37、terial. Sold for electroplating the anchor and star devices shall be 24 Karat (see 4.4.1). * 3.3.7.1 Gold plating. Gold specified in 3.3.7 shall be used for the gold plating. The plating shall be be non-porous and continuous over the entire surface. There shall be no cut through, blistering, peeling or flaking. The base metal shall be as
39、specified in 3.3.6.1 and 3.3.6.2. No visible chemical reaction shall appear when tested as specified in 4.4.2.2. * 3.3.7.1.1 Metal finish. The devices Specified in 3.10.1.2 and 3.10.2.2, shall have a bright polished finish on the front and edges and be comparable to the color and finish of the guide
40、 sample (see 3.1). The gold plated star device specified in 3.3.6.2 shall have a satin finish. 3.3.8 Lacquer. The lacquer shall be a clear, pale, nonpigmented synthetic type. The dry lacquer film shall be continuous, level, adherent, and free from dust, lint, and other foreign inclusions. When teste
41、d as specified in 4.4.2.1, the tissue paper shall not adhere to the lacquered surface. * 3.3.9 Thread, cotton, The cotton sewing thread shall be unbleached, type IA1, ticket No. 40, 3-ply; shade gold shall be type IA3, ticket No. 40, 3-ply; and shade black shall be type IC2, ticket No. 00, 3-ply, co
42、nforming to the requirements of V-T-276. The black thread shall approximate the shade of the lining material and the gold thread shall approximate the shade of the gold lace. As an alternate, the black and gold threads may be a cotton-covered polyester thread conforming to type I, ticket No. 50 or 7
43、0, 2-ply of A-A-50199. * 3.3.10 Yarn, rayon. The rayon yarn used for highlights of the embroidered devices, when specified, shall be a continuous filament regenerated cellulose type dyed Scarlet C.A. No. 67111, Ultramarine Blue C.A. No. 67118, or Black HAN C.A. No. 67138, in accordance with the Depa
44、rtment of Defense Standard Shades for Heraldic Yarns. The use of sulphur dyes is prohibited. Testing shall be performed as specified in 4.4.1. * 3.3.10.1 Colorfastness. The yarn shall show fastness to light, laundering (3 cycles), wet-dry cleaning and perspiration equal to or better than the standar
45、d sample when tested as specified in 4.4.1. As a limit of acceptability or when no standard sample is available, the yarn shall show good fastness to light, laundering (3 cycles), wet-dry cleaning and perspiration when tested as specified in 4.4.1. The fiberboard shall be vulcanized fiber 0.060 (+ -
46、 0.005) inch in thickness when tested as specified in 4.4.1. 3.3.11 Fiberboard. * 3.3.12 Paperboard. When needed, the paperboard used for backing the lining on the underside of the shoulder boards shall be of good commercial quality, free of sulphur (see 4.4.1), and of a color and thickness suitable
47、 for the purpose intended. 3.3.13 Buckram. The buckram used to reinforce the back of embroidered insignia shall conform to type III, class 1 of CCC-C-438. The color shall be natural, bleached, or black. Colorfastness requirements shall not apply. 3.3.14 Strap. The attachment strap shall be full grai
48、ned leather .O90 to ,110 inch thick or flexible vinyl sheet .O50 to .O60 inch thick.
