7、rgy codes and ENERGY STARqualification require limiting air infiltration (leakage) through recessed luminaires (fixtures). The goal is to restrict passage of conditioned air and moisture through a recessed luminaire into unconditioned space in order to reduce energy loss and moisture accumulation. B

8、ecause such luminaires are usually installed in the outer envelope of a building in areas that are provided with thermal insulation, they are also typically rated for insulation contact, but the two requirements are not directly related. Many codes allow various routes for compliance with this air i

9、nfiltration requirement: 1) A luminaire construction that passes a test demonstrating limited airflow; 2) Installation of a vapor barrier over the luminaire; or 3) Installation of a sealed box surrounding the luminaire. This paper will focus on the luminaire construction that passes a test demonstra

10、ting limited airflow and will explain the standard test procedure, installation requirements, and labeling applicable to such luminaires. This information is useful for those testing, producing, specifying, installing, and inspecting these luminaires. ASTM E283 Testing ASTM E2831contains the procedu

11、re used to test luminaires for air infiltration. This standard was originally developed to test windows and doors but has been adopted for other penetrations in the building envelope, such as luminaires. The test involves installation of the luminaire in accordance with the manufacturers installatio

12、n instructions into a panel that represents a building surface. This panel is installed into an apparatus that establishes a differential pressure of 75 Pascals (1.57 psf) across the luminaire. The airflow needed to maintain the static pressure differential is measured and represents the air infiltr

13、ation through the luminaire. The established limit for this air flow is 2.0 cubic feet per minute (cfm). Tests are conducted at third party facilities or manufacturers test laboratories. Installation Instructions Since compliance with the air infiltration tests is dependent upon proper installation,

14、 all special installation procedures must be observed along with the normal product installation steps. Accordingly, it is critical that the installation instructions provided with the luminaire are read, understood, and followed. To prevent excess air flow, the interface between the luminaire and b

15、uilding surface must typically be provided with a seal. Some manufacturers specify a caulking material or provide gaskets or similar sealing materials that must be applied as instructed to prevent air leakage. The instructions will describe proper seal application or might identify specific finishin

16、g sections or trims that must be used to complete the installation. Any questions concerning installation issues should be directed to the manufacturer of the luminaire. In addition to the product installation instructions, all applicable codes and regulations must also be observed. Labeling The lum

17、inaire industry has successfully implemented a voluntary labeling program for compliant products. This voluntary program has been successfully implemented for over 15 years and is recognized by 1American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E283 04 (2012), Standard Test Method for Determining Ra

19、isdictional level for energy code inspection purposes2. Under this industry standard, the luminaire itself bears a label certifying “air seal,” “air tight,” or similar designation and “ASTM E283 tested 2.0 CFM at 75 Pascals.” The label is placed at a location on the product that will be visible duri

20、ng building inspection.
