13、e is to provide a checklist to help the homeowner to evaluate the safety of the wiring devices and associated equipment installed in residences. The standards or guidelines presented in a NEMA standards publication are considered technically sound at the time they are approved for publication. They are not a

15、 substitute for a product sellers or users own judgment with respect to the particular product referenced in the standard or guideline, and NEMA does not undertake to guarantee the performance of any individual manufacturers products by virtue of this standard or guide. Coopersburg, PA Pass there should be no power at face, or at downstream receptacles.) GFCIs should be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas

19、where the risk of electric shock is high. Assure GFCIs are installed where required by the electrical code. Receptacles Verify for correct polarity and grounding; use receptacle circuit tester. Inspect for damaged receptacle/plug slots. Blade contacts should securely hold a plug. All receptacles sho

20、uld be a grounding type or, when not available, replace with a GFCI receptacle. Use Tamper-Resistant receptacles to minimize injuries to children. Switches No cracked or missing toggles or rockers Proper activation, with full travel of the switch mechanism. WD 8-2013 Page 2 2014 National Electrical

21、Manufacturers Association No stalling or intermittent throw action. Device should be free and clear of dirt and paint which could interfere with action. Wall plates and Covers No missing plates. Wallplates shall not be damaged, shall be without cracks or excessive paint. Plates should completely cov

22、er openings and seat firmly against the finished wall surface; no gaps. Assure plates are firmly mounted, level and plumb. Shape of plate opening shall match the shape of the wiring device. Check weatherproof covers and boxes to assure proper gasketing is in place and covers are in working order. Up

23、grade to Current Standards When Appropriate and Where Required When replacing devices assure that products and applications comply with current codes and standards: Receptacles to GFCIs per NEC 406.4(D)(3) Receptacles to AFCI per NEC 406.4(D)(4) Tamper Resistant (TR) Receptacles for required locatio

24、ns per NEC 406.12 , 406.13 and 406.14 and NEC 210.52 Weather Resistant (WR) receptacles and While-In-Use covers for outdoors per NEC 406.9(A) and (B) NEMA has established “Guidelines for Handling Water-damaged Electrical Equipment” .This publication provides guidelines on how to handle electrical eq

25、uipment that has been exposed to water through flooding, fire-fighting activities, hurricanes, etc. Below is an excerpt of the section specific to wiring devices. “Wiring Devices, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI), and Surge Protectors Sediments and contaminants contained in water may find th

26、eir way into the internal components of installed electrical products and may remain there even after the products have been dried or washed by the user. These may adversely affect the performance of those products without being readily apparent to the user community. Also, electrical products, such

27、 as GFCIs and surge protective devices, contain electronic circuitry and other components which can be adversely affected by water resulting in the device becoming non-functional or a hazard to the user. As a result, such products subjected to or believed to be subjected to water damage are not suit

28、able for continued use and must be replaced with new undamaged products.
