、0:2009 Edition 1.1 3 Industrial laminated sheets based on phenolic resin 1 Scope 1.1 This specification covers the mechanical and electrical requirements for laminated sheet materials for industrial purposes. The laminated sheets have a cellulose paper-base or a cotton fabric-base and are bonded tog

、ether under heat and pressure by a thermosetting phenolic type of resin. 1.2 It also covers laminated paper-base sheets that have copper foil bonded to one or both surfaces and intended primarily for use in printed-circuit wiring. NOTE a) The titles of standards referred to by number in the specific

、ation are given in appendix A. b) Requirements that must be specified by the purchaser and a requirement that must be agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser are listed in appendix B. c) In cases where the laminated sheets are to be used at a working temperature higher than 90 C the manuf

、 absolute permittivity is expressed in farads per metre (F/m), and the electric constant ohas the following value: o= 8,854 1012F/m 3 Type designation and general requirements 3.1 Type designation The laminated sheets are classed as cellulose paper-base or cotton fabric-base according to the base ma

、terial used for their construction. Each class of laminated sheets is subdivided into types (according to the intended use). The type of sheet shall be as specified by the purchaser and shall be designated by the appropriate of the following symbols: SANS 1100:2009 Edition 1.1 5 a) X: indicates a pa

、per base and good mechanical properties only (not recommended for electrical applications); b) XX: indicates a paper base and improved electrical properties with some sacrifice of mechanical properties; c) XXX: indicates a paper base and electrical properties suitable for radio frequency application

、s but with greater sacrifice of mechanical properties; d) P: used as a suffix after X, XX, or XXX indicates a sheet capable of being punched after warming; e) PC: used as a suffix after X or XXX indicates suitability for cold punching (i.e. the sheet needs little or no warming before punching); f) 3

、5/0: used as a suffix after XXXPC indicates that the sheet has on one side a copper foil of thickness 35 m; g) 35/35: used as a suffix after XXXPC indicates that the sheet has on each side a copper foil of thickness 35 m. (Similarly, a suffix 70/0 or 70/70 applies in the case of copper foil of thick

NOTE For a more comprehensive summary of the type designation of sheets, their application and distinguishing properties see appendix C. 3.2 Colour The preferred colours for sheets are as follows: a) types X, XP, XPC, XX, XXP, XXX, C, CE, and L: natural or black; and b) typ

、es XXXP, XXXPC, and XXXPC copper-clad: natural. The colour shall be as specified by the purchaser. NOTE Natural colour is produced by the natural undyed paper or fabric combined with unpigmented resin. The natural colour of phenolic material will vary from a light tan to a dark brown. Experience has

、 shown that colours other than those given above have ingredients that prevent laminated sheets from complying with some or all of the mechanical or electrical requirements of the specification. 3.3 Purity of copper foil The purity of the copper foil, determined in accordance with 8.12, shall be at

、least 99,5 % (silver being considered as copper). SANS 1100:2009 Edition 1.1 6 4 Constructional requirements 4.1 General finish The edges and ends of a sheet shall be free from splits and the finish of the surfaces of a sheet shall, except within 12,5 mm of an edge or end, be such as to comply with

、the following requirements: a) A copper-clad surface shall be acceptably free from defects (such as blisters, wrinkles, cracks, holes, pits, dents, and scratches) that may affect its use in service. Other surfaces of laminated sheets shall be acceptably free from blisters, wrinkles, cracks and other

、 deleterious defects such as scratches and dents. b) The number of pinholes of average diameter (i.e. the average of the smallest and largest diameters of a pinhole) greater than 0,13 mm shall not exceed 10/m and there shall be no pinholes of average diameter greater than 0,38 mm. c) The number of i

、nclusions of length greater than 0,5 mm shall not exceed 50/m. d) The unclad surface of copper-clad laminated sheets shall have a semi-gloss or a dull finish. e) Laminated sheets of types X, XX, XXX, C, CE, L, and LE shall have a gloss or semi-gloss finish, and types XP, XPC, XXP, XXXP, and XXXPC a

、gloss, semi-gloss or dull finish. 4.2 Flatness When any sheet of nominal thickness at least 3,15 mm is placed without restraint on a flat horizontal surface, the clearance, at any point between the upper surface of the sheet and a straight-edge, laid so that its mass does not influence the measureme

、nt at any position on the sheet, shall not exceed that given by the formula: Amdt 1 6210L7,5Clearance= where L = the length in millimetres over which the measurement is made. NOTE The recommended length of the straight-edge is 1 m. 4.3 Dimensions 4.3.1 Size of sheets The laminated sheets shall be re

、ctangular and their nominal size shall be as specified by the purchaser and should be one of the following preferred nominal sizes (width times length): 0,9 m 1,2 m; 1,2 m 1,2 m; 1,2 m 1,8 m; and 1,2 m 2,4 m. The actual value of any width or length, measured in accordance with 8.3.1, shall not diffe

、r from the nominal value by more than 25 mm. SANS 1100:2009 Edition 1.1 7 4.3.2 Thickness a) The nominal thickness shall be as specified by the purchaser and should be one of the applicable values given in column 1 of table 1 or column 1 of table 1A, as relevant. The thickness shall be within the ap

、propriate range of thicknesses given in table 2 except that, by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser, sheets of thickness greater than the upper limit of that range may be specified. b) Any difference between the actual thickness of a sheet, measured in accordance with 8.3.2, and the

、 nominal value shall not exceed the appropriate tolerance given in table 1 or table 1A, as relevant. c) In addition, in the case of copper-clad sheets, the actual thickness of the copper foil shall not differ from the nominal value by more than +10 m or -5 m in the case of foil of nominal thickness

、35 m, and by more than +18 m or -8 m in the case of foil of nominal thickness 70 m.
