10、ynthol process and from other petroleum sources Amdt 2 1 Scope 1.1 This specification covers two types of waxy oil, for use in the blending of creosote/oil wood preservative mixtures. Amdt 2 NOTE The test methods referred to in the specification are listed in appendix A. 2 Definitions 2.1 For the pu

11、rposes of this specification the following definitions shall apply: ASTM method test method published by the American Society for Testing and Materials, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, Pa. 19103, USA defective container or a test sample of waxy oil that fails, in one or more respects, to comply with

12、 the relevant requirements of the specification IP method test method published by the Institute of Petroleum, 61 New Cavendish Street, London, W1M 8AR, England lot that quantity of waxy oil bearing the same batch identification, from one manufacturer, submitted at any one time for inspection and te

13、sting 3 Requirements 3.1 Type The waxy oil shall be of type I or type II, as follows: a) type I is obtained from the synthol process; and b) type II is obtained from other petroleum sources. 16、d marking 4.1 Packing The condition of each drum and tanker into which the waxy oil is filled shall be such as to have no detrimental effect on the quality of the product during normal transportation and storage. 4.2 Marking The following information shall appear in legible and indelible marking on

17、each drum or, when the waxy oil is supplied in tankers, in the relevant consignment documents: a) the manufacturers identification; b) the type of waxy oil. Amdt 2 5 Sampling and compliance with the specification NOTE This section applies to the sampling for inspection and testing before acceptance

18、or rejection of single lots (consignments) in cases where no information about the implementation of quality control or testing during manufacture is available to help in assessing the quality of the lot. It is also used as the procedure for adjudicating in cases of dispute. 5.1 Sampling The relevan

19、t sampling procedure described in ASTM D 4057 or ASTM D 4177, shall be applied (after inspection of the lot for compliance with 4.1 and 4.2) in determining whether a lot complies with the appropriate requirements of the specification. The sample so drawn shall be deemed to represent the waxy oil in

20、the lot. Amdt 1 SANS 1265:2009 Edition 1.3 5 5.2 Compliance with the specification The lot shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of the specification if, after inspection of the lot and testing of the sample taken in accordance with 5.1, no defective is found. 6 Methods of test 6.1 Flash p

21、oint, viscosity, pour point, distillation, congealing point of wax, and water and sediment content Use the applicable methods listed in column 3 of table 1. NOTE The congealing point of wax is determined on the wax residue obtained by the method given in 6.2. 6.2 Wax content 6.2.1 Apparatus a) Buchn

22、er filtering flask. A Buchner flask of suitable capacity and to which the filter may be fitted. b) Filter. A sintered-glass filter of diameter approximately 40 mm, and of porosity No. 2. c) Rotary evaporator, fitted with a round-bottom flask of capacity 250 mL. 6.2.2 Solvents a) Benzene. AR grade be

23、nzene. b) Methyl ethyl ketone. AR grade methyl ethyl ketone. 6.2.3 Procedure a) Using a thoroughly mixed sample, weigh out, to the nearest 0,01 g, 10 g 0,5 g of a type I waxy oil or 5 g 0,5 g of a type II waxy oil, as relevant. Place the weighed specimen in a clean dry glass beaker, add 150 mL of th

24、e methyl ethyl ketone and heat the mixture to boiling point on a hot plate. b) Remove the beaker from the hot plate, allow it to cool in an ice-and-water mixture for at least 30 min, and then, with the aid of a freezing-mixture (or by other suitable means), cool the beaker and its contents to 0 C 2

NOTE Ensure that the mixture is not cooled to below -2 C and that its temperature is maintained at 0 C 2 C throughout the filtering procedure described in (c) below. c) Cool the filter by filling it, 1 min to 2 min before filtration, with the methyl ethyl ketone that has been pre-cooled to 0 C. F

26、it the filter to the Buchner flask, remove the methyl ethyl ketone from the filter by applying suction to the flask, and immediately afterwards, under conditions of slightly reduced pressure, pass the contents of the beaker through the filter. NOTE The filtration period should normally not exceed 2

27、min. d) Using a suitable volume of the benzene (pre-heated to a suitable temperature) to dissolve the waxy residue, wash the residue on the filter, quantitatively, through the filter into the tared flask of the rotary evaporator (6.2.1(c). 28、ary evaporator, and evaporate the solvent under reduced pressure and on a heated water bath. Dry the residue to constant mass at 100 C 5 C. f) From the mass of the residue (determined to the nearest 0,01 g) and the mass of the test sample, calculate the wax content of the sample to the nearest 0,1 %

29、. NOTE Retain the wax residue for the test to determine the congealing point.
