They should be sent to: Telecommunications Industry Association Engineering Department Suite 300 250 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA 22201 TIA-1003 2 1 Introduction Today, the WLAN market is showing a huge boom with data oriented applications. Fortunately, WLAN also offers the capabili

、ty to have a mobile converged data and voice solution in a single wireless infrastructure. A new handsets market is emerging today, named VoWLAN (Voice over WLAN) that is based on VoIP mobile applications and the IEEE 802.11 standard. IEEE 802.11 interoperability is addressed through the Wi-Fi Allia

、nce1providing the Wi-Ficertification (see informative references 6 through 9 in Annex B) on the products (Access Points, NICs, etc.). However this compliance only addresses the 802.11 standard that focuses on layers 1 and 2. Therefore, this compliance is not enough to guarantee end-to-end interopera

、bility between VoIP equipment that should focus also on higher layers (layer 3 and above). Considering an end-to-end telephony application, numerous equipments are involved in the corporate environment for this interoperability: VoIP devices, WLAN Access points, networks equipment, gateways, PBXs, e

、tc. The main identified requirements for components of this equipment include, but are not limited to: - display, keypad requirements - acoustic performance requirements - WLAN requirements (QoS, security, etc.) - Wired Network requirements (IP, VLAN, etc.) - Telephony services - Control protocol re

、quirements (H323, SIP, etc.) - Power consumption - Security- Mobility (handover, IP “roaming”, etc.) This Standard is intended to be a living document. The criteria contained in this Standard are subject to revision and update as warranted by advances in network or terminal equipment technology. Thi

、s Standard fills a recognized need in the telephone industry brought about by the use of equipment supplied by many different manufacturers. It will be useful to anyone engaged in the manufacture of terminal equipment and auxiliary devices, and to those purchasing, operating or using such equipment

、or devices. For WLAN IP telephones to succeed, industry requires a standard VoWLAN telephone that: a) is interoperable with other IP telephones (wired or wireless) and IP network equipment; b) provides acoustic performance equivalent to or better than that of existing wireless telephones based on ot

、her technologies (DECT, PWT, etc.); 1Wi-Fiand Wi-Fi Allianceare registered marks of Wi-Fi Alliance. Use of these marks is not an endorsement of the products or services identified, and where appropriate, suitable alternatives may be substituted. TIA1003 3 c) provides a basic set of supplementary ser

、vices; d) satisfies certain safety, security, mobility requirements; e) provides electromagnetic compatibility; and, f) satisfies environmental considerations. The intent of this Standard is to conform to existing IETF, ITU-T, IEEE, ANSI, TIA, ETSI, WFA and other standards; however, it is not the intent of this standard to duplicate the efforts of these other organizations. TIA-1003 4 2 Scope This Standard specifies the minimum requirements for media and protocol-specific call control interoperability, acoustic performance, telephony feature support,
