、eplacement of Steel Wire Ropes . 35ivFOREWORDThis is the first edition of a Standard for elevatorsuspension and compensation systems as well as ropesfor governor applications. This Standard has been devel-oped by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME) to provide guidance to the elevator

、industry forthe appropriate use of means for suspension, compensa-tion, and governors. The first edition includes standardsfor three technologies for elevators, namely: steel wireropes, aramid fiber ropes, and noncircular elastomericcoated steel suspension members. Uniform standardsfor these importa

、nt items are necessary to ensure consist-ent levels of safety and to provide guidance for themanufacturers of these items as well as the designers, manufacturers, installers, maintainers, and inspectors ofelevator equipment. As other technologies emerge and are deemed to besuitable for similar applica

、tions, this Standard will beexpanded to include criteria for their usage. In developing this Standard, experts were assembledfrom the steel wire rope, aramid fiber rope, and noncir-cular elastomeric coated steel suspension members engi-neering and manufacturing fields. Relevant existingstandards were

、 studied during the development of thisStandard and are referenced where appropriate. Thescope of this Standard covers North American and inter-national requirements in a comprehensive manner anddoes not conflict with existing American or internationalstandards. This Standard is intended to be used

、in con-junction with the ASME A17.1/CSA B44, Safety Codefor Elevators and Escalators, and related Codes andstandards.Steel Wire Rope for ElevatorsSteel wire rope has been used for many years in theelevator industry, for suspension, compensation, andgovernor applications.Due to the large range of app

、lications in this diversemarket, many variations of steel wire ropes are in currentuse. Examples include rope of regular and lang lay, leftand right lay, preformed and nonpreformed. Such ropesmay be of a variety of wire materials, from iron to hightensile steel and may be of corrosion resistant cons

、truc-tion. Various core materials including natural and syn-thetic fiber and steel may also be used. Nominal imperialdimensions as well as SI dimensional ropes are used.vIn recognition of the importance of this vital elevatorcomponent and the unique practices of the NorthAmerican industry, this Stan

、dard was developed. ThisStandard covers the current applications and providesstrength and material criteria as well as testing, compli-ance, inspection, replacement, and ordering informa-tion. Imperial and SI dimensions are addressed in theStandard. The purpose of this Standard is to enhancepublic s

、afety and to provide guidance to manufacturersand users of steel wire rope.Aramid Fiber Ropes and Elastomeric Coated SteelBeltsWith the appearance in the market place of new sus-pension and compensation means technologies, such asaramid fiber ropes and noncircular elastomeric coatedsteel suspension

、members for elevators, the need forstandards that will ensure the safe application of theseitems became evident. This Standard addresses theseimportant technologies. In developing the standards, extensive test resultswere studied and the properties and durability of thenew suspension and compensation

、 means were exam-ined. The work included visits to major laboratories atwhich all aspects of the noncircular elastomeric coatedsteel suspension members were tested. The work included a visit to the factory of a majormanufacturer of aramid fiber and technical presenta-tions by experts in this technolo

、gy. The test work of amajor laboratory and field results from the applicationof aramid fiber rope on elevators were also studied.Test facilities where the noncircular elastomeric coatedsteel suspension members were extensively tested onelevators were also visited. In addition, technical presen-tatio

、ns on the noncircular elastomeric coated steel sus-pension members regarding their construction andtesting took place.Tests on both ramid fiber ropes and noncircular elasto-meric coated steel suspension members included life, durability, resistance to damage, traction, replacementcriteria, effects of

、 the environment, and many other crite-ria. This work was extremely helpful in developing thestandards and building confidence in the validity of therequirements.ASME A17.6-2010 was approved by the AmericanNational Standards Institute on March 17, 2010.ASME A17 ELEVATORAND ESCALATOR COMMITTEE(Januar

、NationalStandards Institute (ANSI). Safety codes and standardsare intended to enhance public health and safety. Revi-sions result from committee consideration of factorssuch as technological advances, new data, and changingenvironmental and industry needs. Revisions do notimply that previous edition

TheForeword, Preface, and Notes that are included in thisdocument, and the Interpretations that are provided asa separate document are not part of this AmericanNational Standard. They are advisory in nature and areintended for clarification only.SCOPEThis Standard covers the
