Terminology3.1 GeneralDefinitions are in accordance with Terminolo-gies D883 and E631 and abbreviations with TerminologyD1600 unless otherwise indicated.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 backerboarda flat material used o

9、n the face of thehouse, applied between the studs and the siding (or overexisting wall surface) to provide an even surface for theinstallation of the vinyl siding.3.2.2 buttlockthe bottom of a siding or soffit panel, oraccessory piece, opposite the nail hem, which locks onto thepreceding panel.3.2.3

10、 crimpsmall protrusions, typically approximately12in. (12.7 mm) long,18 in. (3.2 mm) wide, and projecting18 in.(3.2 mm) formed by a crimper (snaplock punch). (See Fig. 2.)3.2.4 crimpera special hand tool designed to form crimps(snaplock ears) intended to hold partial panels in place. (SeeFig. 2.)3.2

11、5 face nailthe action of fastening directly on to the“face,” or exposed surface, of a panel (instead of using the nailslot).3.2.6 fasciathe trim covering the ends of roof rafters. To“fur” a surface means to apply these strips.3.2.9 nailslot puncha special hand tool used to create slotsfor attachment of field-modified siding or accessories. (See Fig.3.)3.2.10 rake (roof)the inclined

17、 usually projecting edge ofa sloping roof.3.2.11 rake (wall)the board or molding placed along thesloping sides of a gable to cover the ends of the siding.3.2.12 snaplock earssee crimp and Fig. 2.3.2.13 snaplock punchsee crimper and Fig. 2.3.2.14 sofftthe underside surface (typically horizontal) ofr

18、oof overhangs.3.2.15 starter stripan accessory applied directly to thesurface of the building and used to secure the first course ofsiding to the home. Starter strips can either be a part manufac-tured for the specific purpose or created by cutting the nailinghem and adjacent lock from a siding pane

19、l.3.2.16 undersill trim (utility trim)an accessory strip usedto receive and hold the crimped edge of horizontal or verticalsiding that has had its normal lock removed.3.2.17 zip tool (unlocking tool)a special hand tool used toseparate interlocked siding panels. (See Fig. 2.)4. Delivery of Materials4

20、1 All manufactured materials shall be delivered in theoriginal packages, containers, or bundles bearing the size ortype product, or both, brand name, and manufacturer (orsupplier) identification, manufacturers lot number, and theASTM specification to which it conforms.5. Protection of Materials5.1

22、of the cartons.5.3 Store the cartons away from areas where falling objectsor other construction activity could impact the cartons. Keepthe cartons dry.5.4 Do not store the cartons in stacks more than 6 boxeshigh.6. Environmental Conditions6.1 Vinyl siding and accessories will expand when heatedand c

23、ontract when cooled. If siding is installed in hot weatherand the siding is very warm it will be partially “expanded.”Provide allowance for more future “contraction” than expan-sion.6.2 Leave14 in. (6.4 mm) clearance between the ends ofpanels and trim and any receiver such as J-channels and cornerpo

24、sts to allow for thermal expansion. If installing duringweather colder than 40F (4.4C), increase the minimumclearance to38 in. (9.5 mm) to allow for additional expansionduring warmer weather.7. 26、ride) in avariety of designs and sizes for use around openings and edgesof wall and soffit surfaces. (See Fig. 5.)7.5 Fasteners:7.5.1 NailsCorrosion-resistant with head diameter516 in.(7.9 mm) minimum, shank diameter18 in. (3.2 mm), lengthsufficient to penetrate not less than34 in. (19 mm) into fram

27、ingor furring.7.5.2 StaplesCorrosion-resistant, 16 gage minimum, with38 to12-in. (9.5 to 12.7-mm) crown, length sufficient topenetrate not less than34 in. (19 mm) into framing or furring.7.5.3 ScrewsCorrosion resistant, self-tapping type, No. 8truss head or pan head length sufficient to penetrate wa

28、llthickness of steel stud or34 in. into framing or furring.NOTE 2To minimize the possibility of any color variation use materialfrom a single manufacturers lot number for application to one building.8. Substrate, Surface Preparation8.1 Water-resistive BarrierVinyl siding must be installedover a wate

29、r-resistive barrier system that includes (1) acontinuous water-resistive material, and (2) properly integratedflashing around all penetrations and where vinyl siding inter-faces with other building products. Refer to the vinyl sidingmanufacturers installation instructions and the minimum re-quiremen

30、ts of the local building code for specific productapplications and requirements.8.2 All caulking to prevent moisture penetration must bedone before siding application. Do not use caulk where it couldrestrict the normal expansion of the vinyl siding.8.3 Apply vinyl siding over sheathing or other rigi

If permitted by the vinylsiding manufacturer, a contoured foam underlayment fitted forthe specific style of vinyl siding i

32、s permitted to be utilized.Apply over wood furring strips when the underlying surface isuneven.8.4 Drive fasteners into framing or furring. Driving offasteners directly into sheathing or existing siding is permittedin accordance with the siding manufacturers instructions,where substantiated by windl

33、oad testing conducted in accor-dance with Specification D3679.8.5 On existing structures, secure any loose boards, replaceany rotted ones, recaulk around windows, doors, and otherareas as necessary to protect from moisture penetration prior tothe installation of siding or accessories. Use furring as

34、 neededto create an even surface.8.6 FlashingRefer to Practice E2112 for installation offlashing around windows, doors, penetrations and points ofinterface between the vinyl siding and other building compo-nents. If available, also refer to the instructions provided by themanufacturer of the window,

35、 door, or other object that willpenetrate the siding.8.7 FurringMasonry and uneven surfaces, as examples,require wood furring strips nominal 1 by 2 in. (25.4 by 50.8mm) applied vertically and typically spaced 16 in. (406 mm)on center for horizontal siding and applied horizontally andtypically spaced

36、 12 in. (305 mm) on center for vertical siding.9. Application of Horizontal Siding9.1 General RequirementsVinyl siding and accessoriesexpand and contract as much as12 in. (12.7 mm) over a 12 ft(3.65 m) length with changes in temperature. For this reasonadhere to the following provisions:9.1.1 When a

37、pplied, vinyl siding products must be attached“loosely,” leaving approximately a132-in. (0.8-mm) spacebetween the vinyl and the fastener head or crown to permitthermal movement. (See Fig. 6.)9.1.2 Center fasteners in slots of siding and accessories topermit possible expansion and contraction. (See F

38、ig. 7.) If anail slot does not allow centering/securing into framing,furring, or other permitted nailable surface, use a nail hole slotpunch to extend the slot and allow centering of the fastener.9.1.3 Do not face nail siding panels. (See Fig. 8.)9.1.4 Allow clearance at panel ends for thermal expan

39、sionbetween corner posts, J-channels, and other receivers inaccordance with 6.2.9.2 Installation of AccessoriesAccessories, includingstarter strips, corner posts and door/window trim, are installedprior to application of the siding, adhering to the provisions of9.1 and those which follow.9.2.1 Corne

40、r PostsOutside and inside corner posts willstart14 in. (6.4 mm) below the top, and end34 in. (19.1 mm)below the bottom edge of the first course of siding which willbe installed later. Attach each leg of the corner posts withfasteners, spaced not over 12 in (305 mm) apart centered innailing slots exc

41、ept the top fastener that is located at the upperend of a nailing slot.9.2.1.1 If more than one length of corner post is required,lap the upper piece over the lower piece by cutting away 1 in.(25.4 mm) of the nailing flange on the top piece. Lap34 in. (19mm) allowing14 in. (6.4 mm) for expansion. (S

42、ee Fig. 9.)9.2.1.2 As an alternative for inside corners, install twoJ-channels with the web of one abutting the adjacent wall andthe web of the other J-channel abutting the shorter outer flangeof the first J-channel. Attach as specified in 9.1.1.9.2.2 Starter StripDetermine the lowest point along th

43、earea to receive siding and install starter strips located so thatthe bottom edge of the initial course of siding will be on a levelline and typically approximately14 in. (6.4 mm) below thatpoint. Allow space for corner posts, J-channels, etc., and keepends of starter strips14 to12 in. (6.4 to 12.7

44、mm) apart. Spacefasteners not more than 10 in. (254 mm) apart, centered in nailslots.9.2.3 Door/Window Trim:9.2.3.1 Install flashing around windows and doors in accor-dance with 8.1 and 8.6 before installing trim.9.2.3.2 J-channel is installed on each side and the top ofdoor and window frames, and u

45、nder window sills. Extend theside J-channels the height of the window or door frame plus thewidth of the visible face of the top and bottom J-channels.9.2.3.4 In the bottom J-channel, cut a notch in the web ateach end the width of the visible face of the sid

47、e J-channel. Inboth side J-channels, cut a notch at the top end and a tab at thebottom end. Miter the bottom ends of the visible face of theside J-channels at a 45 degree angle. In the top J-channel cutalong the bends at both ends of the J-channel to create a tab thesame length as the exposed face o

48、f the side J-channel. Miter theend of the visible face of both ends of the top J-channel at a 45degree angle.9.2.3.5 Install the bottom J-channel. Install each of the sideJ-channels, with the mitered visible face over the face of thebottom J-channel. Bend the tabs in the side J-channels into thebott

49、om J-channel. (See Fig. 10.)9.2.3.6 Install optional head flashing across the top of thewindow or door frame. Install the top J-channel with themitered face over the face of the side J-channels. Bend the tabsin the top J-channel into the side J-channels. (See Fig. 11.)9.3 Siding Panel Installation:9.3.1 General ConsiderationsTo make overlapped sidingjoints less noticeable on the sides of a building, start at the rearcorner and install toward the front. On the front and rear ofbuildings start at the corners
