It was entitled “Standard 311 BHMA Product Standards Section C, Door Controls - Overhead Holders.“ ANSI approval was s
、ecured under the Canvass Method. BHMA was accredited on 21 March 1983 by ANSI as a sponsor using the Canvass Method. 3 FOREWORD (This foreword is not a part of ANSI A156.8). The general classification of builders hardware includes a wide variety of items which are divided into several categories. To
、 recognize this diversity, a sectional classification system has been established. Overhead Holders is one such section and this Standard is the result of the collective efforts of members of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association who manufacture this product. The total Product Standards ef
、fort is, therefore, a collection of sections, each covering a specific category of items. Performance tests have been established to insure safety, security and stability to which the public is entitled. There are no restrictions on design except as required to suit the type of product desired. The
、BHMA recognizes that errors will be found, items will become obsolete, and new products, methods and material will be developed. With this in mind, the Association plans to update, correct and revise these Standards on a regular basis. In most cases products have been described in grade levels relat
、ed to performance. Grade classifications indicate levels only within their own product category. Choice of grade and specific product should be made on the basis of utility, aesthetics, security objectives and end use desired. The BHMA numbers, which indicate types of hardware do not identify size o
、r finish and are not intended to be used without necessary supplementary information. Individual manufacturers catalogs should be consulted. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. GENERAL 5 2. GENERAL 1.1 Scope 1.1.1 This Standard establishes requirements for overhead door stops and holders, and includes performance tests covering operational, cyclical, strength and finish criteria. 1.1.2 Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory c
、onditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions. 2 DEFINITIONS 2.1 Overhead Holder A device surface mounted or concealed at the top of a door with a connecting arm attached to the door frame. It holds a door in a predetermined open position
、or positions and also limits the opening up to 110 degrees. 2.2 Overhead Stops A device surface mounted or concealed at the top of a door with a connecting arm attached to the door frame which only limits the opening travel of a door. 3 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 3.1 SI Units All dimensions are expressed
、first in US units with SI unit (metric) equivalents given in parentheses. SI units are approximate. 3.2 Tolerances All values which do not carry specific tolerances or are not marked maximum or minimum shall have the following tolerances: Number of cycles shall be minimum. Linear dimensions shall be
、 + 1/16 in. (1.6 mm). Pounds or pound force shall be + 2%. A tolerance of + 2 degrees F shall be applied to temperature call outs. 3.3 Reference to ANSI Standards ANSI Standards are available from the American National Standards Institute, www.ansi.org, or the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Associa
、tion . 3.4 Tests Required All Grades of stops and overhead holders are required to meet functional tests described in Section 4. All grades of overhead holders and stops are required to meet the applicable finish tests described in Section 5. 4. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Test Procedures 4.1.1 All
、 tests shall be performed on a door weighing 150-lbs (68-kg) with the center of gravity 18 in. from the hinge or pivot centerline of rotation. The door must accommodate a load application point 30 in. from the hinge or pivot centerline of rotation. 6 4.1.2 Means for mechanically opening the door to
、the stop position and releasing and closing the door shall be provided for the tests. Opening speed shall be 0 to 90 degrees in 3 to 6 seconds. 4.1.3 Doors shall be hung on heavy weight ball bearing hinges or pivots Force required to overcome friction or out of balance condition shall be a .5 lbf (2
、.2 N) or less, measured in accordance with paragraph 4.1.4. 4.1.4 All forces shall be applied to the door and readings shall be taken at a point 30 in (762 mm) from center line of hinge or pivot. 4.1.5 All tests shall be conducted using a single stop or holder. Failure of the stop or holder to compl
、ete or meet the requirements of any part of the test shall constitute failure of test. 4.1.6 The Force Tests (4.3) shall be performed following completion of the Cycle Tests (4.2). 4.1.7 No lubrication shall be added to the stops or holders during these tests. 4.2. Cycle Test 4.2.1 Single Point Adju
、stable Hold Open Types At the start of the test, with closer arm disconnected, door holders with a single point hold open function shall be adjusted to withstand a minimum of a 15 lbf (67 N) perpendicular to door in direction of closing without releasing. Doors shall be mechanically pushed or pulled
、 into hold open, and pulled or pushed back to a closed position for the requirements specified in 4.2.6. Adjustment shall be checked at 1/2 the total cycles required and readjusted to the original holding force if necessary. At the conclusion of cycling, the force required to close the door shall be
、 not less than a 10 lbf (44 N), the door holder shall not have lost nor gained more than 33% of the original holding force, and shall be capable of readjustment to the original holding force. 4.2.2 Single Point Non-Adjustable Hold Open Types Door holders shall be capable of withstanding a minimum of
、 a 15 lbf (67 N) perpendicular to the door in the direction of closing without releasing at the start of the test. Doors shall be mechanically pushed or pulled into hold open and pulled or pushed back to a closed position for the requirements specified in 4.2.6. At the end of one half the cycling pe
、riod, they shall have a minimum holding force of a 10 lbf (44 N). At the conclusion of the cycle test they shall not have lost more than 50% of the original holding force. 4.2.3 Positive Type Holders Doors shall be mechanically pushed or pulled into hold open and mechanically released and closed for
、 the requirements specified in 4.2.6. 4.2.4 Friction Slide Type Holders Frictional holders shall be adjusted to resist an 8 lbf (36 N) and readjusted to an 8 lbf (36 N) at the end of each 10,000 cycles. At the end of the test, holder shall be capable of readjustment to resist an 8 lbf (36 N) without
、 the necessity of renewing the friction unit. Apparatus shall operate at a 15 second cycle 2 seconds. Total cycle test for the friction holders is specified in 4.2.6. 4.2.5 Non-Friction Slide or Stop Only Types These types that are without the hold open feature are required only to complete the cycl
、e test in the applicable grade. If they are of the same construction as single point or friction holders, they need not be tested separately. 7 4.2.6 Cycle Requirements Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade3 250,000 100,000 50,000 4.3 Force Tests 4.3.1 Door stops or holders shall be opened to the stop position and
、a static force exerted against the door in the opening direction in accordance with paragraph 2.1.4. The door holder shall withstand the required force with no impairment of function to the hold open mechanism or the holder itself or both. Requirements Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 300 lbf (1334 N) 200 lb
