、r Selecting, Installing, and Maintaining Electric Motorsand Motor Controllersa73 ivv a73National Electrical Installation Standards (NEIS) areintended to improve communication among speci-fiers, purchasers, and suppliers of electrical construc-tion services. They define a minimum baseline ofquality a
、nd workmanship for installing electrical prod-ucts and systems. NEIS are intended to be referencedin contract documents for electrical construction pro-jects. The following language is recommended:Electric motors and motor controllers rated 600volts or less shall be installed and maintained inaccord
、ance with NECA 230-2010, Standard forSelecting, Installing, and Maintaining ElectricMotors and Motor Controllers (ANSI).Use of NEIS is voluntary, and the National ElectricalContractors Association assumes no obligation or lia-bility to users of this publication. Existence of astandard shall not prec
、lude any member or non-member of NECA from specifying or using alternateconstruction methods permitted by applicable regu-lations.This publication is intended to comply with the edi-tion of the National Electrical Code (NEC) in effectat the time of publication. Because they are qualitystandards, NEI
、S may in some instances go beyondthe minimum requirements of the NEC. It is theresponsibility of users of this publication to complywith state and local electrical codes when installingelectrical products and systems.Suggestions for revisions and improvements to thisstandard are welcome. They should

、ranch circuit is the circuit between thebranch-circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protec-tive device and the motor terminals. It can be either amotor circuit tapped from a feeder, or an individualcircuit to a motor that is connected directly to anovercurrent device in a distribution panel.Motor
、branch-circuit short-circuit, and ground-faultprotective device, sizing requirements for motorsrated 600 volts or less are in NEC Article 430, Part IV.These requirements add to or amend the provisionsof NEC Article 240, Overcurrent Protection. Theseadditions or amendments are required because of the
、particular characteristics of motors regarding lockedrotor current (LRC).5.1Locked-RotorCurrent(LRC)The moment a motor is started, during the accelerationperiod, the motor draws a high in rush current. This inrush current is also called locked-rotor current (LRC)and can be as high as from 4 to 10 ti
、mes the full loadcurrent (FLC). Most motors have a LRC of about 6times the FLC, and this figure is the one generally used. The motor overload device permits the high startingcurrent, which is required to start the motor, to flow fora short period of time and will open the motor branchcircuit after a
、predetermined time (See chapter 6).5.2RatingorSettingThe short-circuit and ground-fault protective devicefor a motor branch-circuit must be capable of carry-ing the starting current (inrush current) of themotor. A protective device with a rating or settingnot exceeding the value calculated in accord
、ance withthe values shown in NEC Table 430.52 must be used. This table lists the types of motors in the first col-umn and the following four columns show the vari-ous overcurrent devices that are used for motor pro-tection.If the motor cannot be started using protectivedevices rated as shown in NEC T
、able 430.52, theexceptions to NEC 430.52(C)(1) may be used. However, the installer should determine that highinrush current is the problem before increasing thesize of the protective devices, and that the motor iscapable of handling the physical load attached to it.5.3IndividualMotorCircuitFor an ind
、ividual circuit feeding directly from anovercurrent device in a distribution panel to a motor, the motor branch circuit conductors must be sized asshown in Section 4 of this publication and these con-ductors must be protected in accordance with NEC430.52. If the value of overcurrent protection speci-fied in NEC Table 430.52 does not correspond to thestandard sizes or ratings of overcurrent devices, ahigher size, not exceeding the next standard size, ispermitted.Where the rating or size shown in NEC Table 430.52is not sufficient for the starting current of the motor, the size or rating sho
