6、able to the battery technology, or in NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.3.4.3 Hydrogen Gasa) Guidelines for the design of electrolyte spill protection and response to electrolyte spills can be found in IEEE 1578, Recommended Practice for Stationary Battery Electrolyte Spill C

7、ontainment and Management. Guidelines for personal protective equipment around batteries can be found in the manufacturers safety data sheets, in IEEE standards applicable to the battery technology, or in NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.b) Verify that battery rooms and comp

8、artments with lead-acid batteries are adequately ventilated to prevent hydrogen levels from exceeding levels specified in local codes (Fire codes typically stipulate a one percent concentration by volume of the space). Gassing rates can be affected by temperature, air pressure, the battery construct

9、ion, and the amount of charge current passing through cells. Not all gas generated in a battery escapes to the atmosphere. Therefore, calculations for hydrogen ventilation shall be performed by a qualified person based upon data provided by the battery manufacturer for the battery under specified co

10、nditions. Additional ventilation may be required during activation charging cycle or other charging regimens.c) Open flames, sparks, hot plates, smoking, or any other ignition sources are prohibited near batteries, gas ventilation paths, or anywhere that hydrogen can accumulate. Discharge static ele

11、ctricity from the body before touching batteries by first touching a grounded metal surface.11 n1. Scope4. Receiving, Inspecting, Handling, and Storage4.1 Receiving and Inspectinga) Verify that the installation of equipment pads and foundations is complete and ready to receive UPSs upon delivery. Ve

12、rify that elevators, lifting devices, and other moving equipment is rated for the load weights and dimensions (including batteries) prior to the arrival of the UPS. Verify that passageways and doorways are appropriately sized to allow entrance and egress of the UPS equipment. If not, contact the UPS

13、 manufacturer to determine how much tipping, if any, is allowable in order to move the equipment. If weight is a problem, portions of the UPS may have to be disassembled. Do not disassemble UPS equipment without the supervision of the manufacturer; disassembly may void warranty or product listing. b

14、) Upon delivery of equipment and accessories, visually inspect packaging for physical damage. Reject damaged cabinets and file a claim with the carrier. Carefully unpack protective crates and packing to inspect for concealed damage resulting from shipping and handling. If damage has occurred, notify

15、 the delivering carrier and the manufacturer in writing immediately. Request a carrier inspection. Note the condition of the shipment on all copies of the delivery receipt, and file a claim with the carrier.c) Compare equipment and accessories received with the bill of materials to verify that the s

16、hipment is complete. Verify that equipment and accessories received conform with approved submittals and manufacturer quotations. If the shipment is not complete, notify the manufacturer in writing immediately. d) If equipment and accessories are to be stored prior to installation, use the original

17、packing materials to protect from the equipment exposure to environmental conditions. When conditions permit, leave the packing materials intact until equipment and accessories are ready for installation. Properly dispose of pallets and packing materials in accordance with federal, state and local r

18、egulations.e) Large UPS modules or sections are typically shipped fastened to wooden skids or pallets (see Figure 2) and with outer protective packaging materials such that the bottom of the UPS is sealed to prevent water, debris, or rodents from entering during shipping and storage. Leave skids and

19、 pallets intact until just prior to installation on the pad. Smaller UPS might be provided with castors and leveling jacks, allowing them to be rolled into place once they are removed from pallets. f) Large vented batteries (lead-acid and nickel-cadmium) are usually installed on open racks. VRLA bat

20、teries are frequently installed in cabinets, although larger units may be installed on open racks.g) Battery racks are shipped dismantled in separate rail, frame, and brace packages. Battery racks are available in a variety of formats including multi-tier, multi-step, and various seismic ratings. Se

22、specifically for the location. Check packages to ensure that the necessary assembly hardware is included. Do not throw away spacers (which are frequently mistaken for packing materials) as these are vital to the seismic installation. Modular battery cabinets are sometimes shipped with the batteries

23、installed, but more frequently the batteries must be installed on-site.h) Battery cells and multi-cell containers are typically shipped fully charged. Take special precautions to prevent shorting of battery terminals or DC terminals of equipment.Batteries are stored energy devices; they cannot be de

24、-energized. Any contact with a battery is considered work on energized electrical equipment requiring handling only by trained and authorized personnel using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), tools and instruments. The greatest hazard is contact between the positive and negative poles

25、 of a battery especially at the system terminations.i) Inspect the seals of batteries that have been shipped dry and charged when they are received at the site. Renew any damaged seals in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Filling with electrolyte and formation charging at site shall on

26、ly be performed by persons who are trained and certified for the task and in accordance with the battery manufacturers instructions. Take special care to prevent contamination of the electrolyte. 4.2 Handlinga) UPSs are typically large, bulky items weighing several hundred pounds or more. Refer to t

27、he packing list for the actual weight of each item. Handle UPSs in accordance with manufacturer recommendations to avoid injury to personnel and damage to equipment. Verify that the lifting capacity of the handling equipment is more than the weight to be moved, and that the handling equipment is com

28、patible with the type of truck making the delivery. Provide suitable protection against the weather for equipment designed for indoor installation (NEMA Type 1).b) UPSs are typically shipped as completely assembled as possible, although several modules may be required for higher capacity or redundan

29、t UPSs. Modular battery cabinets may be shipped with the batteries installed. Outdoor UPSs are typically arranged with lifting eyebolts for handling using a hoist or crane.c) For handling using cranes, ensure that the lifting eyebolts are in line with the lifting direction of the slings, and that th

30、e lifting hooks are completely engaged in the eyebolts before lifting. Use manufacturer recommended hooks, slings, and spacers to prevent overstressing UPS enclosures during lifting. Arrange slings to distribute the lifting forces equally between eyebolts. Use slings or cables of the same length. Sl

31、ots at the base of UPS cabinets are intended for forklift use. Base slots will support the unit only when forklift forks are completely beneath the unit.d) Do not tilt UPS equipment more than 10o from vertical during handling to prevent cabinets from tipping over. Ensure that UPSs do not swing or ti

32、lt during handling.e) Handle UPSs carefully. To ensure safe handling, avoid: Damage to instrument panels which may contain delicate instruments, meters, switches, and controls. Impact, jolting, jarring, and rough handling. Use of a hammer or similar tool when unpacking UPSs. Sudden starts and stops

33、during handling. f) Whenever possible, deliver UPSs to the final installation location upon delivery. When UPSs are stored in other than the final installation location, coordinate staging to minimize handling.g) Ensure that the front doors are in place and that internal access covers and doors are

34、in place and fastened before attempting to lift or transport UPS cabinets and equipment.13 nStandard for Installing and Maintaining Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) NECA 411h) Locate the center of gravity symbols on UPS equipment, when so equipped. Test lift and balance UPSs before transporting.

35、 Maintain minimum tilt angle from vertical at all times.i) Verify that all passages for moving UPS equipment, such as doorways, lifts, and ramps, are wide enough, that there are no impassable corners or changes in the floor level, and that floor are capable of supporting the weight, in accordance wi

36、th Section 4.1 (A).4.3 Storagea) Store UPSs without batteries installed indoors in a clean, warm, dry, well-ventilated room with a moderate temperature ranging between 4C and 38C (40oF and 100F). Ensure that the UPS internal temperature does not exceed 38C (100F) during storage. b) Store UPS with in

37、tegrated batteries indoors in a clean, dry, well-ventilated room with a moderate temperature ranging between 4C and 25C (40F and 77F). Store batteries in accordance with the battery manufacturers instructions, but in no case longer than six months without charge, in accordance with Section 4.3.1. c)

38、 Protect UPSs from rain, snow, dirt, and dust, until final assembly is completed. Also protect UPSs from corrosive gases or fumes, dust, foreign objects, and rodents. Moisture in combination with cement dust is very corrosive to electrical components.d) Store UPSs in a monitored area to discourage v

39、andalism and theft, and out of the way of construction traffic.e) Outdoor UPSs may be stored outdoors prior to being installed. Maintain the original skid or pallet and plastic under the unit. 4.3.1 Storage of Batteriesa) Store batteries indoors, in a clean, dry, well-ventilated and weatherproof loc

40、ation with a sustained temperature between 4C and 25C (40F and 77F). Do not allow batteries or electrolyte to freeze. Store batteries in accordance with the battery manufacturers instructions, but in no case longer than six months without charge. b) Inspect electrolyte levels of lead-acid cells that

41、 have been shipped with internal liquid electrolyte when batteries are received at the site. Add water to the proper level in accordance with manufacturers recommendations, if any has been lost.c) Store dry-charged batteries in a ventilated, weatherproof, cool, dry building. Inspect thermoplastic co

42、ntainers for cracks or damage. Do not remove the plastic film vent seal until the cells are filled with electrolyte and prepared for installation. Consult the manufacturer when storing dry-charged batteries for longer than 12 months.d) Give batteries a refreshing charge as required in accordance wit

43、h the battery manufacturers instructions based upon the storage temperature, but in no case longer than six months after the date of shipment from the factory, and periodically thereafter as required. Restore batteries to manufacturers recommended voltage and specific gravity in accordance with the

44、manufacturers instructions. Do not exceed the manufacturers recommended charging rate.e) Store other types of batteries and recharge as necessary in accordance with the battery manufacturers instructions.f) Prior to installation, inspect the electrolyte level of vented lead-acid batteries. If the el

45、ectrolyte level is below the “add water” marks on the battery container, add water until the water level is even with the upper mark. If the tops of battery plates are exposed, do not place the battery into service. The normal gases generated during battery charging may restore the electrolyte speci

46、fic gravity to normal levels. If the electrolyte does not reach acceptable levels, contact the manufacturer for recommendations. If electrolyte is found on the top of battery units or on the battery unit terminals, clean immediately with a neutralizing solution in accordance with the manufacturers i

47、nstructions. Do not allow the cleaning solution to enter the battery.n 141. Scope5.1 General RequirementsInstall UPSs, accessories, and ancillary equipment in accordance with contract documents, the NEC, and manufacturers installation drawings and wiring diagrams to include overall dimensions, front

48、 view, and sectional view, typical installation and module arrangement, conduit entry, and ventilation and exhaust systems. Consult the manufacturer prior to installing UPSs to support equipment that could affect lives, safety or public services.a) UPSs are permitted to be installed in computer room

49、s, data centers, laboratories, offices, industrial environments, switchgear rooms or other electrical service rooms or other locations provided that the manufacturers environmental specifications and local fire and building codes are met. Avoid locations where corrosive gases are generated, or dusty or dirty locations.b) Locate UPSs to minimize the possibility of damage from flooding, including flooding resulting from fire fighting, sewer backup, and similar occurrences. Do not install UPSs near any source of water, under
