INTRODUCTION TIA/EIA-604 Page 1 INTERMATEABILITY STANDARDS (FOCIS) This document, together with its addenda, provides standards for the intermateability of fiber optic conne

17、ctors. Each addendum to this document is a Fiber Optic Connector Intermateability Standard (FOCIS) for a particular type or design of fiber optic connector. Fiber Optic Connector Intermateability Standards, FOCISs, are developed by Subcommittee FO 6.3 on Interconnecting Devices. They are approved jo

18、intly by EIA and TIA, and are issued as addenda to this document. The intermateability requirements in a FOCIS apply to mating optical components such as connector plugs, adaptors, and receptacles. The intermateability requirements in a FOGS are to be for completed product. For example, for a connec

19、tor plug the requirements are to be the requirements for the plug mounted with the fiber installed and ready for use. 2. OBJECTIVES FOR FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR INTERMATEABILITY O STANDARDS. The objective of a connector intermateability standard is to insure that intermated connector assemblies will fu

20、nction mechanically and that they will meet or exceed their common level of performance. Intermated connector assemblies are assemblies of connector plugs, and adaptors drawn from the products of two or more suppliers. The common level of performance for an intermated connector assembly is determine

21、d by the performance specifications of the separate products. Where the intermated products meet the same performance specification, that specification is the common level of performance. Where the intermated products do not meet the same performance specification, their common level of performance

22、is the least demanding set of requirements in the separate specifications for the intermated products. A FOCIS may also present dimensions for those features that define the mounting for the connector adaptor, and for those features that define the interface between connector plugs and receptacles.

PREPARATION OF FOCISs Guidance for preparing a FOCIS document is contained in EWIA TSM-2, Guide for the Preparation of Fiber Optic Connector Intermateability Standards. 5. FOCIS REQUIREMENTS The requirements in a FOCIS that establish intermateability are based on the curre

27、nt understanding of the technology of fiber optic connectors. As the technology develops, it may at times be necessary to revise the requirements in particular FOCISs. A FOCIS includes those dimensions that insure that intermated connector assemblies will function mechanically and that the performan

28、ce of intermated connector assemblies will be at or above the level of their common level of performance. A FOCIS may also include EIA TIA-bo4 93 3234600 0552350 80 TIA/EIA-604 Page 3 requirements that define the mounting configuration for the connector adaptor, and for those features that define th

29、e interface between connector plugs and receptacles. Requirements that are not necessary to establish intermateability should not be included in a FOCIS. An example of a requirement that should be included in a FOCIS is the diameter of theferrule. Having established the diameter of the ferrule it ma

30、y not be necessary to establish requirements on the diameter of the sleeve that aligns two mating ferrules. It may also not be necessary to establish a requirement on the concentricity of the fiber cores relative to the ferrule. Dimensional gauging may be used for determining conformance to the feat

31、ures of a FOCIS, and a FOCIS may include dimensions for such gages. 6. OPTICAL FIBER FOCIS documents will not include requirements on the fiber to be used in the connector plugs. The fibers in a connector assembly influence connector loss in two ways: fiber geometry and intrinsic loss. Geometrical f

32、actors, such as fiber diameter and core concentricity, effect the alignment of the cores, and hence the connector loss. Intrinsic loss is the loss that would be realized with two fibers in perfect alignment, and with complete physical contact between the cores. The intrinsic loss for identical fiber

33、s is zero. For single-mode fibers intrinsic loss is primarily a function of differences between the mode field diameters of the fibers. The loss in a connector assembly with like fibers, that is fibers with no intrinsic loss between them, is a function of the offset, tilt and gap between the fibers.

34、 These factors are accounted for in intermated connector assemblies in the performance of the separate products. The intrinsic loss between the fibers in a connector assembly with unlike fibers must be added to the loss that would be predicted by the offset, tilt and gap between the fibers. The pred

35、icted loss of intermated connector assemblies with unlike fibers is therefore the sum of the intrinsic loss and the loss that would be predicted by the common level of performance. 7. TUNED CONNECTOR PLUGS The common level of performance for connector assemblies in which one or both of the plugs are

36、 tunable is to be based on performance specifications for those plugs when they are assembled without being tuned. Tunable connector plugs are plugs that may be assembled so that the eccentricity of the core is in a preferred angular relationship to the keying element of the connector plug. - EIA TI

No revision of this document or its addenda is to be made that would invalidate standards that had been previously been issued, or tha

38、t would produce an incompatibility with product supplied under a previous issue. 9. DEFINITIONS AND SYMBOLS Definitions of basic fiier optic terms used in this document and its addenda may be found in the latest edition of EIA-440. Refer to the latest edition of Em-587 for basic fiber optic symbols.

39、 Definitions of terms that are specific to this document are presented in the Glossary, Section 13. 10. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZATION AND HARMONIZATION It is the intent of the FO-6 Committee that EIA/TIA FOCISs be harmonized with comparable international standards (IEC, ISO, CC1T-) to the maximum ex

40、tent possible. Occasionally, however, differences between an FOP and a comparable international standard may be unavoidable. Every effort should be made to reconcile such differences. It is not, however, the intent that FOCISs be forced into including provisions that are inappropriate just for the s

41、ake of harmonization. 11. TEST CONDITIONS Tests or measurements made under the terms of this document and its addenda are to be conducted at test conditions as defined in the latest edition of EIA/TIA 455, Section 6, Standard Atmospheric Conditions. 12. MEASUREMENT UNITS The measurement units to be

42、used in the preparation and publication of FOCISs shall be in accordance with the latest edition of EIA/TIA 455, Section 7, “METRIC POLICY FOR FOTPs. 13. GLOSSARY ? Common Level of Performance - the least demanding or minimum set of performance requirements in the separate specifications of each of

Connector Adapto

44、r - The portion of the connector assembly that joins mo plugs. Connector Assembly - A mated assembly of two connector plugs and a connector adaptor. Connector Plug - The portion of the connector assembly that is mounted on the end of an optical fiber or optical fiber cable, and that mates with a con

45、nector adaptor. Connector Receptacle - The portion of a package, containing a source detector or other device, to which a connector plug is mated. A receptacle normally couples the fiber directly to the device, without a length of fiier between the connector plug and the device. Intermateability - The ability to form optical connections with connector assemblies using products from more than one supplier.
