This document comes from EIA Standards Project No. 3487, formulated under the cognizance of TIA FO-6.7, Subcommittee on Optical Fiber Cables and TIA FO-6.7.16 Working Group

The intent of this test is to determine an optical fiber ribbons mechanical ability to withstand dynamic twisting. 1.2 Scope. This test procedure provides conditions in which an optical fiber ribbon may be

、 twisted in the presence of an applied tensile load. The twisting is performed dynamically over a short period of time under a fixed load condition. The performance of the ribbon is determined by its ability to withstand the test without structural failure. 1.3 Background. Ribbons are manufactured f

、or a number of reasons, including, but not limited to, ease of handling, mass spliceability, and identification of individual fibers in high fiber count situations. Regardless of the intent, it is desired that fiber ribbons retain their structure. One key factor in the stability of a ribbon is its a

、bility to resist mechanical failure when twisted. 1.4 Hazards There are no substantial hazards which are known to be connected with this procedure. Due caution should be observed when cutting optical fiber ribbons, since debris may be thrown off. 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS The following documents form

、part of this FOTP to the extent specified herein: EIWIA-455-A “Standard Test Procedures for Optic Fibers, Cables, Transducers, Sensors, Connecting and Terminating Devices, and Other Fiber Optic Components“ FOTP-13 Visual and Mechanical Inspection of Fiber, Cables, Connectors and/or Other Fiber Optic

、 Devices. 3. APPARATUS The following apparatus and equipment are required to perform this test: 3.1 5X Magnifier. The magnifier is used for inspecting the test sp ci m n at the end of the test. The exact nature of this tool is unimportant, so long as it affords a clear and undistorted view of the sp

The test apparatus is essentially a fixture in which a ribbon The ribbon is twisted under a The upper grip assembly shall be designed to h

、old the upper grip and allow only rotation about the vertical axis. It shall hold the test specimen so that the center of rotation coincides with the geometric center of the specimens cross section. The lower grip assembly shall hold the lower grip and be free to move only along the vertical axis. T

、he total weight of the lower grip assembly shall be equal to 500 I 25 grams. This may be achieved by the addition of weights or through the design of the part itself. The lower grip assembly shall move smoothly and freely along the vertical axis. The grips shall not slip during the test. However, th

、ey shall not cause premature failure of the specimen (end effects should be minimized). Many features of the test apparatus may be changed to suit the user so long as it remains functionally the same. A typical test apparatus is outlined in Annex A (See Figure 1). 4. SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS 4.1 Sampl

、es. otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. Samples may be taken at any point along a ribbons length unless 4.2 Specimen Preparation. No special conditioning is required for this test, unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. 5. PROCEDURE 5.1 Insert one end of the test specim

、en into the upper grip. Tighten the grip so that it holds the specimen firmly, but does not crush it. Rotate the upper grip so that the jaws are aligned with those in the lower grip (rotation stage at O“, or starting position). 5.2 Let the test specimen hang freely from the upper grip. Check the pos

、ition of the sample and, if necessary, adjust it so that it comes straight out of the grip. 5.3 Lift the lower grip assembly (this is the lower grip and the weighted plate attached to it). Manually verify its freedom of movement along the vertical axis. JGF, TIA SC FO-6.7, O1 /26/99 2 TIA/EIA 455-1

、41 5.4 Slide the free end of the test specimen into the lower grip. Raise or lower the lower grip assembly so that the length of ribbon between the upper and lower grips is 300 I 10 mm. Tighten the lower grip so that it holds the specimen firmly, but does not crush it. Mark the ribbon where it exits

、 the upper and lower grips. 5.5 Allow the specimen and lower grip assembly to hang freely. Visually inspect the test specimen. It must hang straight down without kinks, curves or any other visible deviations. The lower grip assembly must hang freely and be properly aligned within the test apparatus.

、 The test specimen must come straight out of the jaws of both grips. Improper alignment of the test specimen will invalidate the test. Check the specimen for mechanical damage before starting the test, as well. 5.6 Rotate the upper grip 180 I IO“ in one direction and return to the starting (O“) posi

、tion. Rotate the upper grip 180 I IO“ in the opposite direction, and again, return to the starting position. This constitutes one cycle. These rotations must be made smoothly and steadily and at a rate of 10 to 20 cycles per minute. Repeat this step until twenty cycles have been petfo rmed. 5.7 Supp

、ort the lower grip assembly so that tension is taken off of the test specimen. Release the specimen from the lower grip and return the lower grip assembly to its rest position. Release the test specimen from the upper grip. 5.8 Using the 5X magnifier, visually inspect the test specimen for damage. I

、nspect only the segment which was twisted during the test. Use the marks from step 5.4 as a reference. Look for any signs of structural degradation. This would include, but not be limited to, cracks, tears, or separations of the matrix from the fiber. Refer to FOTP-13. 6. CALCULATIONS OR INTERPRETAT

、ION OF RESULTS 6.1 Calculations. No calculations are required. 6.2 Interpretation. Ribbons which exhibit structural degradation which is visible under 5X magnification shall be considered failed. 6.3 Precision. This is a “pass/faiI“ type test. 7. DOCUMENTATION 7.1 Report the following information fo

、r each test: JGF, TIA SC FO-6.7, O1 /26/99 3 TIA/EIA-455-141 7.1.1 Date of test. 7.1.2 Identification of procedure used (FOTP-141). 7.1.3 Sample identification. 7.1.4 Record the ribbon ID and any damage observed during the inspection. 7.1.5 Any special conditions, including: 7.1 5.a Any precondition

、ing or accelerated aging to which the specimen has been subjected. 7.1.5.b Any special conditions or changes in the procedure. If changes are required by a Detail Specification, this specification should be referenced. 7.2 United States military applications require that the following information al

、so be reported for each test. For other (non-military) applications, this information need not be reported but shall be available for review upon request. 7.2.1 Test Personnel. 7.2.2 Test Equipment and date of latest calibration. 8. SPECIFICATION INFORMATION The following information shall be specif

、ied in the Detail Specification: 8.1 Exceptions or deviations that apply to this test procedure. 8.2 Exceptions or deviations that apply to the pass/faiI criteria. 47、w is meant to serve only as an example of how the test apparatus can be built. The reader is welcome to copy this design, or to use other designs and/or materials that satisfy the intent of the test. A.l Stand The stand consists of four stainless steel rods and two end plates. The four rods are of e

、qual length and parallel to one another. Each rod is secured to a corner of each end plate and is perpendicular to the end plates. The length of the rods can be substantially longer than the 300 mm specified in the FOTP. This allows longer specimens to be tested if desired. A.2 Rotation Stage/Upper

、Grip Mount The Rotation stage holds the upper grip and allows it to be rotated relative to the upper end plate. However, in all other respects, it fixes the upper grip in place. A handle is attached for manual operation. However, a motor drive can be used to drive the rotation stage, so long as the motion is controlled within the specified limits. A.3 Weighted Plate/Lower Grip Mount The lower grip mount is a flat plate with four guide holes. The four rods of the stand pass through these holes. This allows the plate to move freely along the vertical axis while allowing only slight m
