、in the context of a fundamental hospital signaling nurse call system (NCS). 1.2 A fundamental NCS provides audible and visual communication between patients and staff in a health care facility and conforms to the minimum requirements established in the Health Care Failities Code, NFPA 99, and the Na
、tional Eletrial Code, NFPA 70. 1.3 Accessory equipment or devices which are intended to be interfaced with a fundamental NCS to initiate routine calls or supplementary operation and which do not initiate emergency or code call signaling can be evaluated for compliance with applicable requirements de
、scribed in this standard. 1.4 A minimal fundamental NCS performs the following operations: a) Call Initiation Activation of a staff or patient request for assistance via xed or portable call initiation station, b) Notication Call annunciation (audible and visual) at a primary nurse control station,
、c) Notication Call-placed indicator (visual) on the call initiation station, d) Notication Call annunciation at a corridor lamp, e) Notication Zone annunciation (audible and visual) on a zone lamp, and f) Call reset/cancellation. 1.5 A fundamental NCS may employ a wireless interface to perform funda
、mental operations or a supplementary operation such as notication at a redundant portable nurses station. 1.6 The units comprising a fundamental NCS covered by this standard are intended to be installed in patient care areas, staff areas, and support areas of a health care facility in accordance wit
、h the National Eletrial Code, NFPA 70, and the Health Care Failities Code, NFPA 99. 1.7 These requirements do not cover medical and dental equipment, line isolation monitors, X-ray equipment, electrically heated pads, therapeutic lamps, refrigerated oxygen therapy equipment, food warming cabinets an
、d carts, equipment employed in inhalation anesthetizing or hazardous locations, office intercoms, or similar equipment and products covered by individual requirements. 1.8 These requirements do not cover equipment employed in an area of hyperbaric oxygenation, in which a patient is exposed during ox

MAY 26, 2017 HOSPITAL SIGNALING AND NURSE CALL EQUIPMENT - UL 1069 7UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 2 Fundamentals 2.1 General 2.1.1 A fundamental NCS shall comply wi
、th all the requirements in this standard, unless otherwise stated. 2.1.2 If wireless devices or wireless system capabilities are not part of the fundamental NCS then Section 49, Wireless Devices, General, shall not apply. 2.1.3 Pillow speakers, power supplies and signaling equipment intended to perf
、orm fundamental operation shall be tested for compatibility with at least one fundamental NCS. 2.1.4 For the purposes of enabling a proprietary communications interface for accessory equipment or devices, the protocol of the fundamental NCS can be uniquely tested as a software device in accordance w
、ith 16.1.1. 2.1.5 When a communications interface is enabled as described in 1.3 and 2.1.4, the NCS installation instructions shall include at least the following: a) The manufacturers name or private labelers name, trademark, or other descriptive marking by which each accessory organization can be
、identied. b) Make, model or identiable name of each accessory. c) Any special conditions required for use with each accessory. 2.1.6 Any device or operation which has not been evaluated to the requirements of this standard shall not replace or substitute a fundamental device or operation that was ev
、aluated and tested to the requirements of this standard, except as specied in 16.1.1. 2.2 Nurse call system (NCS) fundamentals 2.2.1 A fundamental NCS employs dedicated wired, dedicated wireless, or a combination of these means for the notication and annunciation of patient initiated or staff initia
、ted calls. 2.2.2 The fundamental operation of an NCS includes the essential and required functions of providing notication and reset/cancellation of staff initiated or patient initiated call signals. 2.2.3 A fundamental NCS shall provide signaling for one or more of the following: staff emergency ca
、lls, code calls, and staff or patient requests for help or assistance. 2.2.4 Provision for the interface and signaling of medical device alerts or any signaling not included in 2.2.3 is permitted and shall be considered supplementary operation. 2.2.5 Provision for two-way audio (voice) communication
、s is permitted and shall be considered supplementary operation. AUGUST 12, 2016 HOSPITAL SIGNALING AND NURSE CALL EQUIPMENT - UL 1069 8UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 2.2.6 The nurse call system shall identify the location of
、 the staff or patient initiated call. 2.2.7 A fundamental NCS shall provide all of the following capabilities: a) Call initiation Activation of a call event via fundamental call initiation station or device. b) Notication Audible and visual annunciation at a wired-primary nurse control station where
、 wiring includes both signal and power. c) Notication Audible and visual annunciation at a nurses duty station which is intended for installation at a xed location. d) Notication Visual annunciation at a wired or wireless corridor lamp. Audible annunciation at the corridor lamp is permitted. e) Noti
、cation Visual annunciation at a wired or wireless zone corridor lamp. Audible annunciation at a zone lamp is permitted. f) Call reset or cancellation The ability to return the nurse call system to a normal quiescent state upon restoration of a call event. 2.2.8 A fundamental NCS shall provide all of the following equipment: a) A call initiation station that provides the fundamental call types described in 2.2.3. It is permissible for a call initiation station to activate
