、REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL INTRODUCTION 1 Scope 1 effective August 31, 2015 1.1 These requirements cover the evaluation of re protective curtain assemblies intended to provide supplemental, passive re protection as part of an engineered re protection system. Fire protect

、ive curtain assemblies provide nonstructural separation only, and are not intended to be substituted for structural hourly rated partitions or opening protectives that have been tested for re endurance and hose stream performance. Note: Fire protective curtains are different than proscenium type (th

、eater type) curtains. This document does not apply to proscenium type curtains. 1.2 Tests made in conformity with these test methods are intended to register performance during the test exposure; but such tests shall not be construed as determining suitability for use after exposure to re. 1.3 It is

、 the intent that tests made in conformity with these test methods allow for the development of data to enable regulatory bodies to determine the suitability of re protective curtain assemblies for use in locations where re protection of a specied duration is required. 1.4 These methods are intended

、to evaluate the ability of re protective curtain assemblies to remain in an opening during a predetermined test exposure. 1.5 The tests expose a specimen to a standard re exposure controlled to achieve specied temperatures throughout a specied time period. The exposure, however, is not representativ

、e of all re conditions, which vary with changes in ventilation and compartment size and conguration. It does, however, provide a relative measure of re performance of re protective curtain assemblies under these specied re exposure conditions. 1.6 Any variation from the construction or conditions th

、at are tested is capable of substantially changing the performance characteristics of the re protective curtain assembly. 1.7 This test method does not provide the following: a) Full information as to performance of all re protective curtain assemblies in walls constructed of materials other than th

、ose tested. b) Evaluation of the degree by which the re protective curtain assembly contributes to the risk of re by generation of smoke, toxic gases, or other products of combustion. c) A temperature limit on the unexposed side of the re protective curtain assembly. d) Measurement of the degree of

、control or limitation of the passage of smoke or products of combustion through the re protective curtain assembly. Note: See limitations for the passage of smoke detailed in the Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives, NFPA 105. JULY 22, 2014 FIRE TESTS OF FIRE PROTECTIVE C

The system in

、cludes, but is not limited to, the re-protective curtain, storage and deployment unit and the framing and anchoring system. 3.4 SUBASSEMBLY The wall or partition construction on to which the re protective curtain assembly is installed. 3.5 TEST ASSEMBLY The re protective curtain, its components and

、any structure used to support the re protective curtain assembly during the re endurance test. 4 Components 4 effective August 31, 2015 4.1 Except as indicated in Section 4.2, a component of a product covered by this Standard shall comply with the requirements for that component. 4.2 A component nee

、d not comply with a specic requirement that: a) Involves a feature or characteristic not needed in the application of the component in the product covered by this Standard, or b) Is superseded by a requirement in this Standard. 4.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established

、for the intended conditions of use. 34、icted in performance capabilities, such components are intended for use only under such limited conditions. For example, components with specied temperature limits shall be used only under those specic conditions. 5 Special Features 5 effective August 31, 2015 5.1 A releasing device that is used to

、initiate closure of the re protective curtain, shall comply with the Standard for Heat Responsive Links for Fire-Protection Service, UL 33, or shall meet the applicable requirements of the Standard for Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems, UL 864. 5.2 Fire protective curtain assembli

、ire Alarm Systems, UL 864. 5.3 When the operator is used to govern the closing speed of the re protective curtain, the operator shall be installed prior to the conduct of the operation tests described in the Operational Tests, Section 13. 5.4 Samples of the re protective curtain assembly tested shal

、l be subjected to physical property tests or chemical analysis, or both, for follow-up service purposes. Fabric type curtains shall be exposed to a minimum of tensile strength and infrared tests. Rigid type curtains shall be exposed to a minimum of hardness and infrared tests. CONTROL OF FIRE TESTS

、6 Furnace Construction 6 effective August 31, 2015 6.1 Furnace size 6.1.1 The furnace shall accommodate the full-sized sample. Small-scale size furnaces are capable of being used for testing small but full-sized samples or representative features of full-sized samples. The furnace face shall be grea

、ter in area than the exposed face of the sample by at least 20 percent. The additional area between the sample and the furnace shall be lled by the subassembly comprised of wall or partition construction. 6.1.2 The furnace shall have a chamber depth, i.e. the distance between the exposed face of the

、 specimen and the face of the furnace lining immediately opposite the specimen, of not less than 23 in (584 mm) and not more than 51 in (1296 mm). 42、WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 6.2 Furnace construction materials 6.2.1 The furnace shall be constructed of materials which have a greater resistance to heat ow through the other ve sides than through the test sample. 6.3 Furnace burners 6.3.1 The furnace shall be heated with burners that are red using

、either natural gas or liqueed petroleum gases. 6.3.2 The heat output of the burners shall be controllable and shall expose the specimen to a uniform heating as specied in Section 7.1.1. 6.3.3 The burners shall function so that the fuel gas is introduced into the furnace where the gas mixes with air

、present in the furnace and then burns; or, as an alternate, the fuel gas is mixed with air prior to its ignition in the furnace. 7 Time-Temperature Curve 7 effective August 31, 2015 7.1 General 7.1.1 The re exposure of the re protective curtain assembly shall be controlled to conform to the applicab

、istribution 7.2.1 At any time after the rst 10 minutes of re exposure, the temperature rise indicated by any of the thermocouples used to determine the furnace temperature shall not differ from each other by more than 270F (150C). With test constructions where either the test sample or any associate

、d construction incorporates combustible materials that produce aming within the furnace or where excess air drawn into the furnace is identied as causing localized heating or cooling of one or more of the furnace thermocouple hot junctions, the deviation of temperature rise from each other recorded

、by the thermocouples so affected shall not exceed 450F (250C). 8 Furnace Temperatures 8 effective August 31, 2015 8.1 The temperatures of the test exposure shall be deemed by a minimum of three thermocouples and no fewer than nine thermocouples per 100 square feet of test assembly symmetrically disposed within the furnace and distributed to show the temperature near all parts of the test assembly. The thermocouples shall be protected by a sealed porcela
