、OPTICAL DENSITY B1 General .B1 OCTOBER 2, 2013 UL 2043 3UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL INTRODUCTION 1 Scope 1.1 This is a re test method for determining the re performance response of discrete products (including, but not li

、mited to electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment) intended to be installed in air handling spaces, such as above suspended ceilings or below oors. These products are subjected to an open ame ignition source and evaluated using a product calorimeter. 1.2 This test may be used to determine re p

、erformance and smoke characteristics of discrete, non-continuous building materials where the Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, UL 723, is not applicable. 1.3 The purpose of this test is to determine the rate of heat release and the rate of smoke release of the burning

、product samples as they relate to the requirements for re-resistant and low-smoke-producing characteristics in accordance with the provisions of the following codes: National Electric Code, NFPA 70; International Mechanical Code, NFPA 5000; Standard for the Installation of Air Conditioning and Venti

、lating Systems, NFPA 90A. 1.4 This test method does not provide information on the performance of products in other re or test conditions. This test does not investigate the toxicity of the products of combustion. 1.5 This test does not cover the constructional, electrical, or other performance requ

、irements of the product. 1.6 The Codes noted in 1.3 reference the use of UL 2043 for electrical equipment with combustible outer enclosures. Specically, the National Electrical Code and the International Mechanical Code expressly state that electrical equipment with metal enclosures shall be permitt

、ed. Consequently, UL 2043 is not intended to apply to electrical equipment with metal outer enclosures unless otherwise specied by end-product-standard requirements. 2 General 2.1 Units of measurement 2.1.1 Values stated without parentheses are the requirement. Values in parentheses are explanatory

、or approximate information. 28、as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard. PERFORMANCE 3 Test Equipment and Instrumentation 3.1 General 3.1.1 The apparatus includes the following main components: an ignition source, a steel angle frame enclosure, a collection hood and exhaust duct, velocity, and temperature measu

、ring instrumentation, gas sampling and analysis equipment, smoke measuring instruments, and a data acquisition system. Note: Standard Practice for Full-Scale Oxygen Consumption Calorimetry Fire Tests, ASTM E2067, provides guidance for acceptable test equipment and instrumentation. 3.1.2 The test bui

、lding in which the test apparatus is located is to have vents for the discharge of the combustion products and have provision for fresh air intake. 3.2 Ignition source 3.2.1 The propane gas burner used as the ignition source is to have dimensions of 12-1/2 by 12-1/2 by 4 inches 1/4 inch (318 by 318

、by 102 mm 76 mm). The burner is to be constructed of nominal 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) steel with a nominal 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) diameter steel gas inlet pipe. The pipe is to extend into the burner 5 inches (127 mm) nominal and a 6 inch (152 mm) nominal metal diffuser plate is to be positioned over the outlet

、 of the gas pipe. A ne mesh metal screen is to be placed on top of the diffuser plate. The burner eld is to be lled with silica sand. The ignition source is illustrated in Figure 3.1. 3.3 Test frame enclosure 3.3.1 The test frame enclosure is to be as described in Appendix A Guide to Mounting Method

、s. 3.4 Collection hood and exhaust duct 3.4.1 The collection hood is to be installed centrally above the test specimen. The face dimensions of the hood are to be at least 8 by 8 feet (2.4 by 2.4 m), and the depth is to be at least 3.5 feet (1.1 m). The hood is to exhaust into a plenum havinga3b y3fo

、ot (0.9 by 0.9 m) cross section (see Figure 3.2). The lower edge of the collection hood is to be positioned so that the hood collects all products of combustion. 3.4.2 The exhaust duct connected to the plenum is to be at least 16 inches (406 mm) in diameter. The duct is to run horizontally at least

、10 times the duct diameter downstream from the last turn in the duct prior to location of instrumentation, in order to provide for a fully developed turbulent gas ow. Mixing vanes are to be installed in the duct if concentration gradients are found to exist. The outlet of the exhaust duct is to be d

、irected to smoke abatement equipment. The exhaust ow is to be capable of being varied from a minimum of 1000 to at least 5000 cubic feet per minute (0.47 to 2.4 m 3 /s). 3.4.4 An alternate exhaust system design is not prohibited from being us

Equivalency is demonstrated by meeting the requirements specied in Pretest Calibration, Section 4. 3.5 Velocity measuring instruments 3.5.1 The velocity in the exhaust duct is to be determined by measuring the differential pressure in the ow pat

The probe is to consist of a stainless steel cylinder with a solid diaphragm in the center that divides the probe into two chambers. The probe is to have a cyl

、inder length nominally two times its outside diameter, with a minimum length of 1.0 inch (25 mm) and a maximum length of 2.0 inches (50 mm). The pressure taps on either side of the diaphragm are to support the probe. 3.5.2 The axis of the probe is to be located at the approximate centerline of the d

The probe shall not be positioned at other locations except where the alternative position has been shown to provide equivalent results. The pressure taps are to be connected to a pressure transducer with a minimu
