、or use in equipment such as electronic products, uninterruptible power supplies, emergency lighting, engine starting, and power equipment. These energy storage capacitors, also known as “electric double layer capacitors”, ”ultracapacitors”, “double layer capacitors” or “supercapacitors” consist of e
、ither individual capacitors or multiple series and/or parallel connected capacitors with or without associated circuitry. 1.2 These requirements do not cover electrochemical capacitors for use in hazardous (Classied) locations. 2 Units of Measurement 2.1 Values stated without parentheses are the req

Values in parentheses are explanatory or approximate information. 3 Undated References 3.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this standard shall be interpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard. 4 Components 4.1 Except as
、 indicated in 4.2, a component of a product covered by this standard shall comply with the requirements for that component. 4.2 A component is not required to comply with a specic requirement that: a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in the produc
、t covered by this standard, or b) Is superseded by a requirement in this standard. 4.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions of use. 4.4 Specic components are incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capabilities. Such
、 components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures not exceeding specied limits, and shall be used only under those specic conditions. 24、STRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 5 Glossary 5.1 For the purpose of this standard the following denitions apply. 5.2 CAPACITOR For the purposes of this standard, a single electrochemical capacitor will be referred to as a capacitor and is a single energy storage device whose charge and discharge
、 is not the result of a chemical reaction. 5.3 CAPACITOR CASING The container for an individual capacitor that serves to protect and contain its internal components and prevent injury from contact to hazardous materials. 5.4 CAPACITOR ELECTRODE The layered interior windings of a capacitor. 5.5 CAPAC
、ITOR MODULE A single or multiple series and/or parallel-connected, electrochemical capacitors with associated circuitry. 5.6 COMPONENT, CURRENT LIMITING Any component used to restrict the ow of electrical charge during abnormal conditions. Current-limiting components include resistors, fuses and PTC
、 thermistor type devices. 5.7 COMPONENT, TEMPERATURE LIMITING Any component used to restrict the degree of overheating during abnormal conditions. Temperature-limiting components include thermal protectors, thermal cutoffs, and PTC thermistor type devices. 5.7A ELECTROCHEMICAL CAPACITOR An electric
、energy storage device where electrical charge is stored as a result of non-Faradaic processes at one or both of the electrodes. (A subset of electrochemical capacitors referred to as an asymmetric electrochemical capacitor have non-Faradaic processes at one electrode and Faradaic processes at the ot
、her electrode.) The unique highly-porous electrode increases its surface area for holding charge resulting in much larger capacitance and energy density than other types of capacitors. Electrochemical capacitors differ from common electrolytic capacitors in that they store charge at the liquid-solid
、 interface of the electrodes when a potential is applied rather than in a solid dielectric material covering the surfaces of the electrodes. Some other common names for an electrochemical capacitor are double layer capacitor, ultra-capacitor, electrochemical double layer capacitor, super-capacitor,
、and EDLC. 5.7A added November 1, 2012 5.8 ELECTROLYTE The medium containing ions which facilitates transfer of charge within the capacitor. 5.9 ENCLOSURE The part of the capacitor module that: a) Renders inaccessible all or any parts of the equipment that may otherwise present a risk of electric sho
、ck, or b) Retards propagation of ame initiated by electrical disturbances occurring within. 5.10 EXPLOSION A condition that occurs when the capacitor contents are forcibly expelled and the capacitor enclosure is torn or split into two or more pieces. 5.11 FAMILY (CAPACITOR) A series of capacitors fr
