2、 SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers the requirements for buttons, insignia and findings used by the United States Military Academy. 1.2 Classification. Buttons, insignia and findings covered herein shall be as specified herein and the applicable military specification sheet (see 2.1, 3.1, 6

3、and supplement 1). 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 Government documents. 3 2.1.1 Specifications, standards, and handbooks. In the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein (except for related associated detail specifications, specification sheets, or MS standards), the text of this document takes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable

REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Specification sheets. The individual item requirements shall be as specified herei

19、n and in accordance with the applicable MS sheet. In the event of any conflict between the requirements of this specification and the MS sheet, the latter shall govern. 3.2 First article. When specified in the contract or purchase order, a sample shall be subjected to first article inspection. 3.3 S

20、tandard sample. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.31, the contracting officer shall furnish a standard sample or approved guide sample which shall be used for matching color and finish only. Variations from thiB specification may appear in the standard sample or approved guide sample; however, in su

21、ch cases the specification shall govern. 3.4 Material. The material shall be as specified herein. Recovered material shall be used to the maximum extent possible. 3.4.1 Solder. 3.4.1.1 Hard solder. Hard solder shall be a silver alloy solder having a melting point of not less than 1075 degrees F (580

22、 c). 3.4.1.2 Soft solder. Soft solder shall be a tin-lead alloy having a melting point of not less than 375 degrees F (190 c) 3.4.2 Copper-base alloys. Copper base alloys shall be free from pits, scale (including red oxide), dents, cracks, nicks, deep scratches, segregations and foreign matter that

23、will not b removed in later processing. The chemical composition of the applicable copper-base alloys shall be as shown in table I, when tested as specified in 4.6.1. 24、e from red brass specified in 3.4.2 and shall conform to the details and dimensions as shown on the applicable specification sheet. 3.6.4.5 Hook. When specified, the hook shall be made from brass specified in 3.4.2 and shall conform to the details and dimensions as shown on the applicable specificat

25、ion sheet. 3.7 Finish. The color and finish of the insignia, buttons and findings shall be as specified on the applicable specification sheet. 3.7.1 Platina. All plating shall be by electroplating methods. The plating shall be continuous and unbroken over the entire plated surface. There shall be no

Gold plating shall be accomplished using gold specified in 3.4.6. Prior to plating, all surfaces shall be cleaned

27、of all matter which might affect the gold plating. Unless otherwise specified, the use of white metal as an undercoating shall not be permitted. When tested as specified in 4.6.4.1 no visible chemical reactions, such as evolution of gases, shall appear. When tested as specified in 4.6.4.2 the averag

28、e quantity of gold on buttons within a lot shall not be less than the amount specified in the applicable specification sheet. In addition, any one dozen buttons tested shall contain not less than 90 percent of the specified quantity. 3.7.1.2 Hot nickel underglatinu. When nickel plating is specified

29、on the applicable specification sheet, the underplating shall not be less than 0.00025 inch. Testing shall be standard commercial. In case of a dispute, testing shall be in accordance with ASTM test method B487. 3.7.2 Enamelins. Enameling shall be applied so as to be uniform in color, free from bubb

30、les, foreign inclusions, cracking, crazing, or other defects which affect appearance. There shall be no overrunning of enamel. 3.7.2.1 Hard enamelinq. Hard enamel specified in 3.4.7.1 shall be charged, fired and stoned level with the dikes. The enamel shall then be lapped, felted or wheel polished t

31、o produce a glass like finish. No design elements shall be removed during the stoning process. There shall be no noticeable burn spots as a result of the iring. 3.7.2.2 Enamel (Daint). Enamel specified in 3.4.7.2 shall be applied in accordance with the manufacturers standard practices. 3.7.2.3 Bakin

32、cr enamel. When insignia is to be subdued, baking enamel specified in 3.4.7.3 shall be used. Prior to enameling, the entire insignia shall be given a black chemical finish conforming to MIL-F-495. When tested as specified in 4.6.5.1 and 4.6.5.2, the enamel shall not flake or chip and no color shall

33、transfer to the cotton except for a slight trace of residue. 3.7.3 EPOXY resin stoninq epoxy). Epoxy resin (stoning epoxy) specified in 3.4.8 shall be applied so as to be uniform in color, free from bubbles, foreign inclusion or other defects which affect appearance. There shall be no overrun of epo

34、xy. The epoxy shall be stoned level with the dikes and Lapped, felted or wheel polished to produce a glass like finish. No design elements shall be removed during the stoning process. When tested as specified in 4.6.6 the epoxy shall have a shore hardness of no less than 85D. 3.7.4 Lacauerinq. Insig

35、nia items shall be lacquered as indicated on the applicable specification sheet. The dry lacquer film shall be continuous, level, adherent and free from lint, dust or other foreign matter. When tested as specified in 4.6.7.1 there shall be no change in the appearance of the clear lacquer surface exc

36、ept a slight overall yellowing of the highlights. When tested as specified in 4.6.7.2 the tissue paper shall not adhere to the clear lacqueiad surface. 3.7.5 Anodizincc. dyed to the required color. Anodized items shall be sealed in a nickel acetate bath and when tested as specified in 4.6.8.1 no sta

37、in shall appear on the anodize. 3.8 Markincl for identification. The contractor shall stamp his trade or other identifying mark legibly and inconspicuously on each item in the location indicated in the applicable specification sheet. Aluminum shall be anodized to a minimum depth of 0.0003 inch and 3

38、.9 Government loaned property. Hubs will be loaned by the Government and shall be used to make the contractors working dies necessary for one contract or order (see 3.5). 3.10 Workmanship. Buttons, insignia and findings shall be clean, well made, and shall meet the acceptable quality levels establis

QUALITY ASSURANC,E PROVISIONS 4.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contract

40、or is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements (examinations and tests) as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor may use hi6 own or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements speci

41、fied herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in this specification where such inspections-are deemed necessary to ensure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements. 4.1.1 Responsibility for compliance.

42、All items shall meet all requirements of sections 3 and 5. The inspections set forth in this specification shall become a part of the contractors overall inspection system or quality program. The absence of any inspection requirements in the specification shall not relieve the contractor of the resp

43、onsibility of ensuring that all products or supplies submitted to the Government for acceptance comply with all requirements of the contract. Sampling inspection, as part of manufacturing operations, is an acceptable practice to ascertain conformance to requirements, however, this does not authorize

44、 submission of known defective material, either indicated or actual, nor does it commit the Government to accept defective material. Test method Method 111 of Fed Std No. 151 4.2 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified as follows: One 4x4 I sheet o

45、equiv- alent for eac alloy a. First article insbection (see 4.4). b. Quality conformance inspection (see 4.5). 4.3 Inspection conditions. Unless otherwise specified, all inspections shall be performed in accordance with the test conditions specified in 4.5 and 4.6. 4.4 First article inspection. Insp

46、ection and testing of the first article shall be made on a completely finished item for all provisions of this specification applicable to end product examination-and tests. 4.5 Qualitv conformance inspection. Inspection shall be in accordance with the provisions set forth in MIL-STD-105, except whe

47、re otherwise indicated (see 6.4). 4.5.1 Inspection of components. 4.5.1.1 Testinq of components. In additin to the quality assurance provisions of the subsidiary specifications and drawings, inspection shall be performed on components and materials listed in table II for the test characteristics sho

48、wn therein. The inspection level shall be S-1 and the requirements shall be applicable to the lot average. TABLE II.
