This specification covers M197A1, M198A1 and M354 tactical dollies for use in converting various semitrailers to full trailers. 1.2 Classification. Dollies

19、mple shall be subjected to first article inspection in accordance with 4.2. 3.2 Materials. Materials used shall be in accordance with the manufacturers materials specifications for dollies. The materials shall be capable of meeting all the operational and environmental requirements specified herein.
20、 Recovered materials shall be used to the maximum extent practicable (see 4.5.1). 3.2.1 Ozone resistance. When rubber components are required to be ozone resistant, the degree of resistance shall be as specified in applicable specifications or drawings (see 4.5.1 and 6.2). 3.3 Construction. The vehi
21、cle shall be constructed in accordance with the applicable drawings specified in table I and as supplemented herein. The vehicle shall be complete with all specified items installed, including reflectors, payload tiedowns, lashing hooks, lifting devices, and tools (see 4.5.2). TABLE I. Drawings. Mod
22、el Drawing M197A1 8736120 M198A1 8736124 M354 8736308 3.3.1 Seals. When fording or operating in mud, sand or snow, seals shall prevent entrance of foreign matter into the bearings. Bearing seals shall restrict the leaking of lubricants from bearing (see 4.5.3). 3.3.2 Electrical circuits. Electrical
23、circuits shall maintain continuity from end to end, without evidence of internal or external shorts, during all vehicle operating conditions (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.4). 3.3.3 Controls. All electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic controls shall operate without malfunction under all vehicle operating conditi
24、ons (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.5). 3.3.4 Adjustment mechanisms. All adjustment mechanisms shall function properly, and maintain adjustment within required settings during all vehicle operating conditions (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.6). 3.3.5 Welding and rivets. Welding and rivets shall meet the quality requirements

Welding repairs of any kind shall be made only when, and to the extent, specifically authorized by the procurin
26、g activity (see 4.5.2 and 6.2). 3.3.6 Tires and tubes. 3.3.6.1 Tires. Tires shall be cross-country type as specified for tactical vehicles. Tires shall be in accordance with the Tire and Rim Association or to the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organization recommendations. Size of tires shall be as
27、 specified in the applicable vehicle characteristic data sheets (see 4.5.1, 4.5.2 and 6.4). 3.3.6.2 Inner tubes. When tube type tires are specified, inner tubes shall be of heavy duty type and shall be of proper size for tires furnished. Tube type radial tires shall have radial type inner tubes. Tir
28、e flaps shall be provided for tube type tires in accordance with the Tire and Rim Association recommendations. 3.3.7 Intervehicular connections. Safety chains, cables, and hoses shall be of sufficient length and routed correctly to function properly under any vehicular orientation (see 4.5.2). 3.3.7
29、.1 Drawbar assembly. Drawbar shall raise and lower correctly to allow vehicular connection (see 4.5.2). 3.3.8 Suspension. Suspension clearances shall prevent interference between wheels and other portions of the vehicle when vehicle is in use under any condition of its intended purpose (see 4.5.2 an
30、d 4.5.7). 3.3.9 Axle assembly. The axle assembly shall be properly installed and shall have a capacity as specified in table IV for the applicable vehicle (see 4.5.2). 3.3.10 Fifth wheel. The fifth wheel shall accommodate the applicable semitrailer kingpin and meet the performance requirements of th
31、e 6000 mile operational test (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.7). 3.3.11 Lunette. Lunette shall accommodate the applicable towing vehicle attachment device at maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the trailer (see 4.5.2). 3.4 Performance. The vehicle shall meet the performance requirements of this specification w
32、hen fully equipped, loaded with rated payload, serviced with standard products (see 6.5) and towed by appropriate military towing vehicle. 3.4.1 Reliability. Vehicles with rated payload, when operated in accordance with 4.5.7, shall possess not less than 60 percent probability of completing not less
33、 than 6000 miles without replacement or overhaul of the principal components and/or subassemblies. 3.4.2 Maintainability. The total scheduled maintenance, excluding driver/crew checks and services, shall be between 4 and 8 man hours. The total unscheduled maintenance shall be Provided by IHSNot for

This equates to a Maintenance Ratio (MR) of 0.013 to 0.067 at 20 miles per hours (mph) and a MR of 0.02 to 0.10 at 30 mph. The s
35、cheduled maintenance intervals shall be 3 months or 3000 miles of operation, whichever comes first. Maximum time to repair (only to include diagnosis, repair and verification) shall be as follows, using personnel normally employed: a. Organization maintenance shall not exceed 3 manhours 95% of the t
36、ime. b. Direct support maintenance shall not exceed 10 manhours 95% of the time. c. General support maintenance - not required. 3.4.3 Environmental. The vehicle shall operate as specified herein, under extreme conditions of weather, in ambient air temperatures ranging from -50 degrees Fahrenheit (F)
37、 to +125 F (see 4.5.8). 3.4.4 Service products. Servicing and lubrication shall be performed using standard service products (see 4.5.1 and 6.5). 3.4.5 Highway and cross-country operations. 3.4.5.1 Highway operation. When loaded and towed at specified speeds, in a straight line, on a relatively leve
38、l, smooth paved surface, the path of the towed vehicle shall not deviate more than 3 inches to either side of the path of the towing vehicle (see 4.5.9). 3.4.5.2 Cross-country operation. The vehicle shall be towable at specified load and speed over unimproved roads, or gently rolling terrain. When s
39、o operated in a straight line, the vehicle shall track the towing vehicle without damage to itself or the towing vehicle. Stability shall be maintained (see 4.5.10). 3.4.6 Gradeability. When towed over a dry, hard-surfaced road, free of loose material, each vehicle shall exhibit the stability and gr
40、adeability specified. 3.4.6.1 Longitudinal inclines. Each vehicle shall follow the towing vehicle, without weaving to an extent which adversely affects the controllability of the vehicle combination, when ascending or descending longitudinal inclines having a 15% grade (see 4.5.11). 3.4.6.2 Side slo
41、pes. Each vehicle shall follow the towing vehicle without slipping or upsetting when operating, either left or right, on 20% side slopes (see 4.5.12). 3.4.7 Turning ability. When coupled to the towing vehicle, operating in its minimum turning circle, each vehicle shall follow without cramping or sid
42、e-slipping and without damage to or interference between the towed vehicle and the towing vehicle (see 4.5.13). 3.4.8 Braking ability. 43、s of the vehicle and towing vehicle shall control, decelerate, and stop the vehicle combination within 30 feet from a speed of 20 mph on dry, hard, level, smooth surfaced roads. Hydraulic brakes shall conform to FMVSS No. 105 (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.14). 3.4.8.2 Automatic actuation. The automatic breakaw
44、ay device shall apply and maintain application of the vehicle brakes for not less than 15 minutes, upon breakaway from the towing vehicle (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.15). 3.4.9 Fording. Each vehicle shall ford hard-bottomed, salt or fresh water crossings of depths great enough to completely submerge the chas
45、sis to top of fifth wheel and shall withstand such submergence for periods up to 15 minutes duration without damage to the vehicle or its components (see 4.5.16). 3.4.10 Landing leg. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), the vehicle shall have a landing leg. The landing leg shall exhibit capacity an
46、d adjustment to raise, support and hold its portion of the fully loaded vehicle and shall withstand, without damage, the strains imposed when coupling or uncoupling the towing vehicle. The landing leg shall extend and retract; and when retracted, shall provide ground clearance for cross-country oper
47、ation (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.17). 3.5 Surface treatment. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), exterior surfaces of the vehicle shall be cleaned, treated, primed, and painted in accordance with the manufacturers standard practice. The color of the exterior paint coat shall be as specified in the contrac
48、t (see 6.2). When specified (see 6.2), Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings (CARC) paint shall be required (see 4.5.2). 3.5.1 Corrosion protection. The dollies shall function as intended and shall show no signs of detrimental corrosion after being subjected to a salt spray solution (see 4.5.2 and 4.5.8
49、.1). 3.6 Marking. The identification marking and data plates shall be permanent and legible and shall include, as a minimum (see 4.5.2, 6.2 and 6.3): a. Part or identification number (PIN). b. Model number. c. Manufacturers name or trademark. d. Date of manufacture. e. Contract or order number. 3.6.1 Identification plates.
