11、lumber/plywood used in the construction of the exterior crates/boxes shall be treated with wood preservative in conformance with the composition B or D of TT-W-572. Alternatively, the lumber/plywood of the exterior crates/boxes may be treated with water-borne preservative chromated copper arsenate (
12、CCA) in accordance with processes described in American Wood Preservers Association (AWPA) standards C1, C2, and C9. When CCA is used, the following additional conditions must be satisfied: a. Such treatment shall result in a minimum retention of 0.40 pounds of preservative per cubic foot of lumber/

Compositions B and D of TT-W-572 can offer reliable protection for periods up to thirty years against decay and wood-destroying organisms provided such treated containers ar
17、e not stored in direct contact with the ground. The preservative CCA provides reliable protection against the same undesirable elements for periods as long as forty years. However, the properties of CCA and the prescribed methods of application are such that the treated container may be stored in di
18、rect contact with the ground, even buried underground, for that forty year period and continue to provide the desired degree of reliable protection. When level A packing is a requirement of the contract and it is know that the containers are to be exposed to unfavorable environmental conditions for
