This specification covers the requirements andquality assurance provisions for the manufacture and acceptanceof two types of lead azide for use as z primary explosive (see6.1).o 1.2 Classification. Nothing in thisdocument, however, supersedes applicable laws and regulationsunless a specific exemption has been obtained.3. REQUIREMENTS3.1 Material. The lead azide shall be manufactured by aprocess which

14、 provides a product conforming to the requirementsin this detail specification.3.2. Color The lead azide shall be of a white color but .shall be no darker than color 37769 in Federal Standard 595 whenexamined as specified in 4.5.2.3.3 Dimensions. (for Type 1 only). The lead azide shall befree of nee

15、dle shaped crystals (needle shape crystals are definedas crystals having a length/diameter of 7/1 or greater) whenexamined as specified in 4.5.3.3.4. Particle size. The particle size for Type 11 shallnot exceed 5 microns (for Type II only geometric mean) and thelargest particle shall not exceed 10 m

16、icrons when tested asspecified in 4.5.4.3.5 Chemical and DhvsiCal nroDerties. 18、ondocument (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjected to first articleinspection (see 6.3) in accordance with 4.3.3.7 Workmanship. The manufacturer shall implementprocedures and controls to assure that the process and theproduct produceci are not compromised by foreign materials andcontaminants or any o

19、ther conditions which may degrade thecomposition. Determination of foreign materials shall be inaccordance with 4.5.8.4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS4.1 ResDonsibilitv for inspection. Unless otherwisespecified in the contract or purchase order, the supplier isresponsible for the performance of requi

20、red inspections,examinations and tests as specified herein. Except as otherwise a71specified in the contract or order, the supplier may use his ownor any other facilities suitable for the performance of theinspections, examination and tests specified herein, unlessdisapproved by the Government. In a

21、ddition, the Governmentreserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth inthe specification where such inspections are deemed necessary toassure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.Reference shall be made to MIL-sTD-109 to define terms usedherein.4.1.1 Resoonsibili

22、tv for compliance. Lead azide shall meetall requirements of sections 3 and 5. The inspections set forthin this specification shall become a part of the contractorsoverall inspection system or quality program. The absence of anyinspection requirements in the specification shall not relievethe contrac

23、tor of the responsibility of ensuring that allproducts or supplies submitted to the Government for acceptancecomply with all requirements of the contract. Samplinginspection, as part of manufacturing operations, is an acceptablepractice to ascertain conformance to requirements, however, thisdoes not

The required

25、inspections specified herein are classified as follows:First article inspection (see 4.3);: Quality conformance inspection (see 4.4)4.3 First article inspection.4.3.1 Submission. When specified in the contract orpurchase order, the contractor shall submit a first articlesample consisting of one (1)

26、pound of lea azide. The firstarticle sample shall be obtained from the first production lotwhich has been produced by the contractor, using the sameproduction processes, procedures and equipment as will be used infulfilling the contract. All raw materials used in producing thelead azide shall be fro

If the sample fails

30、 to comply with any ofthe applicable requirements, the first article quantity shall berejected. The Government reserves the right to terminate itsinspection upon any failure of a sample to comply with any of thestated requirements.4.4 QualitV conformance inspection.4.4.1 InsDectiOn lot formation. A

31、lot shall consist of oneor more batches produced by one manufacturer, in accordance withthe same specification, or same specification batch under onecontinuous set of operating conditions. Each batch shall consistof that quantity of lead azide that has been subjected to thesame unit chemical or phys

32、ical process intended to make the finalproduct homogeneous. The criteria and procedure for theassignment of lot numbers shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-1168.4.4.2 Examination and tests.4.4.2.1 Classi fication of characteristics. Quality conformanceexaminations and tests are specified in the foll

33、owingclassification of characteristics paragraphs. PRECAUTION: This specification coverssampling and testing of toxic and hazardous material.Accordingly, it is emphasized that all applicable safety rules,regulations and proc

40、edures must be followed in handling andprocessing the lead azide.4.4.3.1 Samulinq. Obtain two random 30 gm samples fromeach batch of lead azide being submitted for inclusion in a lot.The samples shall be obtained from the process vessel prior topackout using procedures described in ASTM-E300 for slu

41、rries.a714.4.3.2 Testinq for batch acceptance. One sample obtainedaccording to 4.4.3.1 from each batch shall be tested inaccordance with the applicable test methods of 4.5 forconformance with the requirements for color (see 3.2) , dimension(see 3.3), acidity, pH (see 3.5) and workmanship (see 3.7).

42、Ifany sample fails to meet any of these requirements, the batchrepresented by the sample shall be rejected. Rework of non-conforming batches is permitted.4.4.3.3 Testinq for lot acceptance. The second samplesfrom the batches not rejected under the provisions of 4.4.3.2shall be placed in a suitable c

43、ontainer of sufficient volume tohold a composite sample from all batches in the lot. Thecomposite sample shall be thoroughly mixed to assure homogeneity,and two sub-samples of approximately 30 gm each shall be obtainedfrom this composite sample. Both sub-samples shall to tested in oaccordance with t

44、he applicable test methods of 4.5 to determineconformance with the requirements for particle size (see 3.4) ,purity (see 3.5) and water volubility (see 3.5). If either sub-sample fails to meet any of the test requirements, the lotrepresented by the composite sample shall be rejected.4.4.4 Inspection

45、 eauiument. For the performance of alltest and examinations specified in 4.3 and 4.4. the equipmentspecified shall be employed. The contractor shall have theequipment available, utilize it in accordance with the testmethod, and is responsible to assure that it is properlycalibrated. Government appro

46、val of all contractor designedinspection equipment is required prior to its use for acceptancetesting (see 6.4).4.5 Methods of inspection. All tests described in thissection shall be performed using prescribed procedures forreplicate determination given in standard analytical chemistrytextbooks or A

47、STM D 2905. Unless otherwise specified herein, allchemicals shall be Reagent Grade or ACS Grade in accordance withMIL-STD-1218. If these grades are not available, all chemicalsshall be the highest purity grade commercially available. See6.5 for the use of equivalent test methods.16Provided by IHSNot

Transfer a portion ofabout 25 gms of the wet sample obtained in 4.4.3.1 to a Buchnerfunnel fitted with a medium porosity filter paper. Aspirate thesample and retain the wa
