Scope1.1 This specification covers requirements for electr
3、olyti-cally formed porous oxide coatings on aluminum and alumi-num alloy parts in which appearance, abrasion resistance,electrical properties, and protection against corrosion areimportant. Nonporous, barrier layer anodic coatings used forelectrical capacitors are not covered. Seven types of coating

Manufacture3.1 Defects in the surface of the basis metal, such asscratches, porosity, inclusions, roll and die marks, cold shuts,and cracks, will adversely affect the appearance and perfor-mance of applied coatings despite the observance of bestanodizing practices. Accordingly,

16、d should contain appropriatelimitations on such basis metal conditions.3.2 The basis metal shall be subjected to such mechanicalfinishing operations, cleaning, and chemical or electrolyticpre-treatments as are necessary to yield anodic coatings withthe final quality and appearance specified by the p
17、urchaser.3.3 Except where specifically excluded, anodized parts shallbe sealed in water or aqueous chemical solutions of suchpurity, composition, pH, and temperature, as to impart theproperties specified herein.4. Significant Surfaces4.1 Significant surfaces are defined as those normally vis-ible (d
18、irectly or by reflection) which are essential to theappearance of serviceability of the article when assembled innormal position; or those surfaces which can be the source ofcorrosion products that will deface visible surfaces and inter-fere with functional surfaces on the assembled article. Whennec
19、essary, the significant surfaces shall be the subject ofagreement between purchaser and manufacturer and shall beindicated on the drawings of the parts, or by the provision ofsuitably marked samples.NOTE 3When significant surfaces are involved on which the specifiedthickness or density of the coatin
20、g cannot readily be controlled, such asthreads, holes, deep recesses, and similar areas, the purchaser and themanufacturer should recognize the necessity for either thicker films on themore accessible surfaces or for special racking.5. Manner of Specifying Requirements5.1 Coating DescriptionWhen ord
21、ering articles to befinished in accordance with this specification, the purchasershall state:5.1.1 The ASTM designation number,5.1.2 The coating type and description (see Table 1),5.1.3 The minimum anodic film thickness,5.1.4 Special post anodic treatments,5.1.5 Applicable quality assurance requirem
22、ents (see Sec-tion 6),5.1.6 Significant surface appearance requirements such ascolor, texture, or reflectivity, and5.1.7 The alloy to which the coating is to be applied.5.2 Supplementary CoatingAny supplementary coatingthat is required in addition to normal or special sealing musteither be described
23、 in detail along with its requirements or theappropriate specification(s) must be referenced.6. Quality Assurance6.1 Anodic oxide coatings can be produced to have manydifferent characteristics. No single coating can be expected tohave all of these characteristics. Therefore, the quality assur-ance r
24、equirements for a given coating should be selected tocontrol those properties necessary to the expected end use forthe product.6.2 Anodic coatings supplied under this specification shallmeet the minimum requirements for film thickness as stated inTable 1.6.3 The following ASTM test methods are appli
25、cable toanodic coatings within the scope of this specification: B 110,B 117, B 136, B 137, B 244, B 368, B 457, B 487, B 538,D 658, E 429, and E 430. The selection of tests to be requiredand the level of performance against each test, with theexception of minimum film thickness, shall be subject toa
26、greement between purchaser and manufacturer. The Dye StainTest, as described in Test Method B 136, shall not be requiredfor Type G coatings or for Types B through F coatings sealedonly in dichromate solutions, or for unsealed Type A coatings.7. Workmanship and Appearance7.1 WorkmanshipThe anodic coa
27、tings shall be continu-ous, smooth, adherent, uniform in appearance, and shall be freeof powdery areas (burns), loose films, stains, discolorations,and discontinuities such as pits, breaks and scratches, or otherdamage. The size and number of contact marks shall be theminimum consistent with good pr
28、actice. The location ofcontact marks shall be in areas of minimum exposure to serviceenvironmental conditions when important to the function of thepart.7.2 AppearanceIf applicable, the color and finish appear-ance (bright, dull, or satin) shall be a reasonably closeapproximation to that of a sample
29、consisting of treated piecesagreed upon as the standard range by the manufacturer and thepurchaser.NOTE 4This range, representing the limits that the manufacturer willsupply and that the purchaser will accept, should be established before anywork is performed to meet this specification.8. Sampling8.
30、1 Test methods are time consuming and often destructive;therefore 100 % inspection is usually impractical. The pur-chaser should select a suitable sampling plan for the acceptancetesting of lots of coated items. In order that the manufacturermay know the quality standard he is expected to meet, the
