Scope1.1 This specification covers the composition and physicalproperties of spray-applied cellulosic fiber stabilized thermalinsulation appli

3、ed to open or closed ceiling spaces, regardlessof slope, where temperatures range from -49 to 194F (-45 to90C).1.2 Stabilized cellulosic fiber thermal insulation is producedby the addition of adhesive(s) to loose-fill cellulosic fiberinsulation. The adhesive(s) may be added to the insulation attime

4、of manufacture and, if necessary, activated by the additionof water when installed or the adhesive may be added to theinsulation at the time of installation.1.3 This is a material specification that is not intended todeal with methods of application that are supplied by themanufacturer.1.4 The value

Terminology3.1 DefinitionsFor definitions of terms used in this speci-fication, see Terminology C 168.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 shrinkagedecrease in thicknes

9、s that occurs from thetime of installation until the insulation achieves a stablemoisture content.3.2.2 stabilized cellulosea cellulosic insulation producttreated to resist, after drying, further settling of no more than5%.4. Materials and Manufacture4.1 The basic material shall be recycled cellulos

10、ic fibermade from selected paper or paperboard stock. Additives areintroduced to provide properties such as flame resistance,processing and handling characteristics. An adhesive is addedto the insulation product to resist long-term settling of theinsulation after installation and curing.4.2 The mate

11、rials are processed into a form suitable forinstallation by a pneumatic method.4.3 The adhesive may be added to the product at the time ofmanufacture or at the time of installation by means of a liquidspray.5. Physical and Chemical Properties5.1 DensityThe density of conditioned stabilized insula-ti

12、on in lb/ft3(kg/m3) shall be determined in accordance withSection 7.5.2 CorrosivenessThe loose-fill insulation material shallbe tested for corrosiveness in accordance with Section 8. Thecomposition of the insulation material shall be such that aftertesting, no perforation of the 0.003 in. (0.076 mm)

13、 metalspecimens shall be evident when the specimens are observedover a 40-W appliance light bulb. Notches extending into thecoupon 0.1 in. 16、 accordance withSection 9, the critical radiant flux shall be equal to or greaterthan 0.11 Btu/ft2s (0.12 W/cm2). All values shall be reported totwo significant digits.5.4 Fungi ResistanceThe loose-fill insulation materialshall be tested and pass fungi resistance as specified in Section10. All three

17、 test specimens shall exhibit growth less than orequal to the comparative material in order to pass.5.5 Water Vapor SorptionMoisture gain in the insulationshall be no more than 15 % by weight when tested inaccordance with Section 11.5.6 Odor EmissionAny sample producing a detectableodor that is clas

18、sified as objectionable and strong or strong bymore than two panel members shall be considered to havefailed the test when tested in accordance with Section 12.5.7 Smoldering CombustionWhen tested in accordancewith the smoldering combustion test method in Section 13, theinsulation shall show no evid

19、ence of flaming and a weight lossof no greater than 15 % of the specimen weight.5.8 Thermal ResistanceThe standard thermal resistancevalues recommended for application shall be expressed inFhft2/Btu (Km2/W). The R-value shall be measured inaccordance with Section 14. During random sampling, anaverag

20、e measured R for four specimens that is 95 % of thelabeled value shall be acceptable provided no measurement isless than 90 % of the labeled value.35.9 Flame Resistance PermanencyThe importance of aninsulation product to maintain its fire retardant characteristicsis recognized. A task group is curre

21、ntly studying methods toascertain if there is long-term deterioration of fire performancecharacteristics of cellulose insulation. Should the need for apermanency test method be determined by this task group anda test method developed and finalized, it will become a part ofthis specification.5.10 Shr

22、inkageThe shrinkage (S1) determined in accor-dance with Section 7.5.11 SettlingThe settling (S2) determined in accordancewith Section 7 shall be no greater than 5 %.6. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance6.1 The product shall be free of extraneous foreign materialssuch as metals and glass that will a

23、dversely affect the perfor-mance in service.7. Shrinkage, Settling, and Density7.1 Density:7.1.1 ScopeThis test method provides a basis for calcu-lating the product coverage values and for conducting physicalproperty tests requiring the use of density for specimenpreparation. The shrinkage and settl

24、ing results provide infor-mation for installation.7.1.2 Significance and UseThe density is the weight perunit volume expected after long-term attic use. All testing ofthis product shall be done using specimens having the densitydetermined by the drop box method described in this section.7.1.3 Appara

25、tus:7.1.3.1 Insulation Specimen ContainerThe drop box ap-paratus shall consist of an open-top box with sides and bottommade from34-inch (19 mm) thick plywood. The interior of thebox should be treated with a water sealer. The interiordimensions of the box shall be 2233635-inch (deep)(55939143127 mm)

26、for insulation withR32ft2hF/Btu (5.64 Km2/W). A 1.0-inch (25 mm) steel “eye”shall be attached to each corner to facilitate lifting the box witha cable or rope harness and pulley system. All box dimensionsshall be within 63 % of the values specified above.7.1.3.2 SpacerA 6.0-inch (150 mm) thick space

27、r shall befabricated for positioning the box above a concrete floor. Thespacer should be fitted with a handle or heavy cord to assistmoving it from below the suspended box. A quick releasedevice can be used to drop the suspended box.7.1.3.3 BalanceA balance having sufficient capacity toweigh a speci

28、men container with freshly installed insulation towithin 0.01 lb (5g).7.1.3.4 Probe and RulerA 0.125 6 0.008 inch (3.2 6 0.2mm) diameter metal rod that is pointed on one end shall beused as a pin gauge. A steel rule with 0.05 inch (1.0 mm) orfiner readability shall be used to determine insulation th

29、ick-nesses. The device pictured in Figure 1 of Test Method C 167may be used.7.2 Procedure:7.2.1 A partially enclosed area is required for specimenpreparation. The enclosure must protect the blowing operationfrom wind or strong air currents. The geometry of the roomshould not influence the stream of

30、insulation from the hose. Itis recommended that the area of the enclosure be at least 2.5times the area of the test specimen container.7.2.2 The weight of the empty box, M1, shall be determinedto within 0.06 lb (25 g).7.2.3 The product to be tested shall be installed in the boxusing equipment and in

31、stallation instructions recommended bythe manufacturer. Excess insulation shall be screed from thetop of the test specimen to provide a level surface thatcoincides with the top edges of the box. The weight of the boxand newly installed insulation, M2, shall be determined towithin 0.06 lb (25g) and r

32、ecorded.7.2.4 The average depth of the insulation shall be deter-mined to within 0.05-inch (1 mm) using a metal probe. Fiveindividual depth measurements shall be averaged to obtain thedepth that is representative of the newly installed insulation.Individual measurements shall be taken at the center

33、of the boxand in each quadrant of the box.7.2.5 The insulation shall be allowed to dry in a conditionedspace maintained at 75 6 5F and 50 6 5 % RH until a changein net weight of the specimen is less than 0.06 lbs (25 g) in twoconsecutive weighings with 24 h between weighings. Theweight of the box wi

34、th the conditioned (dry) insulation, M3,shall be recorded. 35、urb the insulation, an additional 10-in. deep box ofinsulation installed in the same manner as the test specimensmay be prepared and used to track the drying of the testspecimens.7.2.6 The thickness of the conditioned insulation shall bemeasured by the same method used to measure the initialthicknes

36、s.7.2.7 The box containing the conditioned insulation shall bedropped five times onto a solid concrete floor from a height of6 -0/+1/2 inches (150 -0/+13 mm). The average thickness ofthe insulation shall be measured after five drops using themethod used to measure the initial thickness.7.2.8 The ins

37、ulation shall be removed from the box andweighed to within 0.01 lb (5g). This is weight M4.7.3 Calculations:All of the following are inside dimensions.L = the length of the box , in. Interlaboratory data arebeing obtained and a precision statement will be added with thenext revision.7.5.2 Bias cannot be determined at this time since a

42、recog-nized standard is not available.8. Corrosiveness8.1 DeterminationCorrosiveness shall be determined inaccordance with section 6.7 of C 1149 using the densitydetermined in Section 7 with a 10-inch deep (254 mm) dropbox.9. Critical Radiant Flux9.1 Specimen PreparationThe specimen shall be prepare

43、din accordance with the manufacturers installation instructions.9.2 MeasurementCritical Radiant Flux shall be deter-mined in accordance with E 970-89. Products shall be testedafter a test specimen including the adhesive has been condi-tioned to constant weight.9.3 ReportEach of the three measurement

44、s shall be re-ported.10. Fungi Resistance10.1 MeasurementFungi resistance shall be measured inaccordance with Test Method C 1338.10.2 Comparative MaterialA section of untreated south-ern yellow pine approximately 2 3 2 338 in. (51 3 51 3 9.5mm) will be used as the comparative material. The uppersurf

45、ace of the pine shall be planed smooth to determine therelative growth on specimens being tested. For insulationintended to be mixed with adhesive at the time of installation,determine the amount of adhesive concentrate required for 0.35oz (10 g) of dry insulation. Mix the adhesive with 37.5 ml ofdi

46、stilled or deionized water and add this to the dry insulation toform a slurry. For material intended to be mixed only withwater at the time of installation, mix 37.5 ml of distilled ordeionized water with 0.35 oz (10 g) of dry material.11. Water Vapor Sorption11.1 MeasurementWater vapor sorption sha

47、ll be deter-mined in accordance with Section 12 of C 739 for the densitydetermined using a 10-in. deep drop box.12. Odor Emissions12.1 Odor emission shall be determined in accordance withTest Method C 1304.13. Smoldering Combustion13.1 Specimen Preparation:13.1.1 Specimen preparation shall be in acc

48、ordance withsection 6.5 of C 1149 or Section 14 of C 739.13.2 The smoldering combustion test shall be done for testspecimens at a density within 5 % of the density determined inSection 7 using a 10-inch deep drop box. The test shall beperformed on dry material containing adhesive in the case of apro

49、duct containing a dry adhesive. Products that use a spray-applied adhesive shall be tested after a specimen includingadhesive has been allowed to condition to constant weight. Thecriteria given in section 7.2.5 shall be used to identifyconditioned specimens for the purpose of this test.14. Thermal Resistance14.1 Thermal resistance shall be determined in accordancewith Section 15 of C 739. The test specimens must bestabilized product that has been prepared in accordance withmanufacturers recommendations and allowed to dry in accor-dance w
