This guide seeks to address specificitems within Specification C 270 and Test Method C 780 tohelp promote their proper use and interpretation.4. Specifying Masonry Mortar4.1 Use Specification C 270 to specify masonry m

If neither the Proportion nor Propertyspecification is given, Specification C 270 the Proportionspecification to be used.4.2 Proportion SpecificationsThese Specifications directthe mason to produce the masonry
、mortar using designatedvolumetric proportions of cementitious materials and aggregateas set forth in Table 1, Proportion Specifications, of Specifica-tion C 270 for the Type of mortar specified. This procedure ofspecifying mortar requires no sampling and testing of mortar, and hence, no measurement o

All that is necessary is fieldconfirmation of the proper proportions of the mixes used inconstruction.4.3 Property SpecificationsThese Specifications requiretesting of laboratory-prepared mortar for compliance with therequirements of T
、able 2, Property Specifications, of Specifica-tion C 270 for the Type of mortar specified.4.3.1 The Property Specifications require evaluation of amortar with a consistency (flow) of 110 6 5 %. This is anarbitrarily established mortar consistency that is used toapproximate the water content of morta
、r after it is placed in amasonry assemblage with absorbent masonry units. Theamount of water required in mortar produced at the construc-tion site is normally greater than the amount used for Specifi-cation C 270 Property Specifications testing.4.3.2 Do not use the Specification C 270 Property Speci
、fi-cations requirements to evaluate construction site-producedmortars. Due to the higher amount of water necessary foractual masonry construction, mortar produced and sampled inthe field will typically have lower compressive strength thanthat produced in the laboratory per Specification C 270.4.3.3
、When mortar is specified by the Property Specifica-tions, the quantities of cementitious materials and aggregatesas determined through laboratory testing are converted tovolumetric proportions to produce masonry mortar at theconstruction site.5. Quality Assurance of Masonry Mortar5.1 Mortar Material
、sVerify that individual mortar mate-rials being used meet the ASTM Standards listed under theMaterials Section of Specification C 270. Compliance is typi-cally verified by submission of a letter of certification or testreport for each mortar material.NOTE 1If any of the materials used do not comply
、with the materialrequirements of Specification C 270, the Proportion Specifications can notbe used. Specification C 270 specifically permits the use of masonry sandsthat do not comply with the gradation requirements of Specification C 1441This guide is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C12 on

、C 780, Annex A4) andmortar water content (Test Method C 780, Annex A5). Bymeasuring the mortar aggregate ratio and mortar water content, the proportion of cementitious materials to aggregate by masscan be determined and then converted to proportions byvolume. The measured volumetric proportions of th

、, isnot the appropriate test method to determine the compliance ofthe mortar with the compressive strength requirements ofSpecification C 270; however it may have some value in thedetermination of mortar uniformity. Construction site masonrymortar strengths are not generally equal to the values cite
、d inthe Property Specifications Requirements Table of Specifica-tion C 270 due to the difference between water contents offield- and laboratory-produced mortars. Furthermore, mortarcompressive strengths can vary from day to day depending onthe amount of mix water required, the curing conditions at t
、heconstruction site, the weather conditions, masonry unit andsand moisture contents, and other variables.5.5.3.1 Measuring mortar compressive strength of field-sampled mortar has no relevance unless preconstruction testingis performed in the laboratory using similar mixing equipment, mortar materials
、, and the same specimen geometry. Even whenthis is done, the field compressive strength data can only becompared to the preconstruction mortar strength data in gen-eral, due to other factors, such as weather, temperature ofmortar, and the absorption properties of the specific masonryunits being used
、.6. Preconstruction and Construction Evaluation ofMortar Properties6.1 Use Test Method C 780 to evaluate mortar properties ofa mortar mixed to a field consistency.6.2 Annex A1 and A3 of Test Method C 780 are used tomeasure consistency (sometimes called plasticity or flow).Annex A6 is used to measure
、 air content. Annex A7 is used tomeasure compressive strength.NOTE 2The consistency of mortar at a construction site should beadjusted to provide optimum workability that is compatible with themasonry units used in the construction, rather than using a predeterminedvalue for consistency. Due to diff
