Universal Product Code What are the zebra stripes (See the figure) on the Instant Mashed Patato Flakes package? They are special black and white vertical lines. These black and white stripes can be

10、read by an optical scanner, or computer. The “scanner“, which reads the lines of code, is a small laser beam of light. When the light rays is broken by the black stripes, the computer “reads“ the information about the product. This code is called the Universal Product Code (UPC). It is designed to a

11、dd speed and efficiency to stores by using computers. It can do this in several ways. First, it is not necessary for workers to put individual prices on items. By using UPC, the computer can print out the accurate price of the item. Errors in prices are eliminated, or done away with. Also, the time

12、spent checking out is reduced UPC gives an itemized receipt to the customer with all the items, prices, and totals. The store clerk does not need to spend time checking the price on the item and punching it into the cash register. This UPC computerized system will probably save as much as 45 percent

13、 of the checkout clerks time. What do the stripes mean? How does the computer interpret the stripes? The number printed below the vertical bars identifies the manufacturer and the manufacturers item. As many as 10 trillion individual machine-readable numbers can be used with this system. In the exam

14、ple, the 0 on the left side means that it is a grocery item. The numbers 36800 indicate the manufacturer, in this case it is the Food Club Company. The last five digits, 51512, mean it is a pack of mashed patato flakes. The light rays from the light beam read these lines, and the message is sent dir

15、ectly to the computer. The computer then finds the information about this product (price, inventory data) and sends it instantly back to the terminal at the checkout counter. At the same time, it keeps an inventory for the store manager. Many products have labels with these stripes. 16 The figures p

The result is this book, based on interviews with twenty Chief Executives. Each top manager-none of them famous names, surprisingly-is given a short chapter, and the

20、re is some introductory material and a conclusion. This means you can jump from one person to another, in any order, which is good for people who are too busy to read a book form cover to cover. For a management book it isnt expensive, although whether its good value for money is doubtful. Some of t

21、he twenty interviewees started their own businesses, while others joined a company and fairly new in their position, and others have had years of experience, though, strangely, Stuart doesnt seem interested in these differences. The interviewees work in everything, from retailing to airlines to soft

22、ware, and it is this variety that forms the main theme of Stuarts book. I have to say that Stuarts approach annoys me. He rarely stays at a distance from his interviewees, who are mostly presented in their own, positive words. If this were always the case, at least you would know where you were. But

23、 he seems to dislike certain interviewees. As a result, I dont know whether to accept any of his opinions. It also means that the book gives no clear lessons. At the very least, I expected to learn what makes a successful Chief Executive. But these people seem to share two types of qualities. Some o

24、f them are very common, suggesting that anyone can be equally successful, which is definitely not the case. And the other qualities are ones which most successful bosses Ive seen definitely do not have. So in the end Im no wiser about what really goes on. Perhaps Im being unfair. As long as you dont

25、 think about whether youd like them as friends, and pay no attention to most of the advice they give, the most readable parts are where the bosses describle their route to their present position. Stuart seems to think that his book would be useful for people aiming for the top, and that it might eve
