8、ds farmers used about 100 million tons of fertilizer in 2000, down from about 140 million tons in 1990. This was the fifth consecutive annual decline since the historical peak in 1990. Also, within the several years before 2000 a number of major food-producing countries, such as the former Soviet Un

In China, which led the world in fertilizer use, farmers increased their reliance on fertilizer from around 28 million tons in 1995 to about 29 million tons in 2000.
