14、原文】 Man: Right, Id like to call this meeting of the Business Broadcasting Committee to order. Thank you. This is the first meeting of the new season and we have a great deal to discuss. First Id like to apologise for the confusion over the meeting room. It was to have been the Blue Room, but weve ha

15、d to use this one - the Red Room because of. well, Ill spare you the details. Lets get on. Charles, youll be taking the minutes, as agreed. Right. Meeting commencing at 10am . or rather 10.04am, to be precise. This is a strategy and ideas meeting to decide on our programme requirements for the forth

16、coming TV schedules. We have to discuss . firstly, if any change is required in the present number of business programmes in the companys output and secondly, the content of these business programmes. These are the only points on the agenda in front of you, but Im afraid it could be a lengthy meetin

17、g. First. Numbers of programmcs. It has been proposed to cancel “The Financial World“ or at least the programme in its present format. This programme has been losing audience share for some time. Fewer people are watching it compared to its rival “Company Update“ on Channel 7. A major problem with “

18、The Financial World“ seems to be its time slot. At present it goes out at 6pm on a Sunday whereas “Company Update“ (which used to be broadcast on Sunday) has changed to Monday at 7pm with a repeat at 7am the next morning. So. Shall we cancel or change “The Financial World? And if we cancel it what s

19、hall we replace it with? A cancellation will leave us with a 50 minute slot to flu with a new business programme. Now, content of programmes. As an introduction and to get you thinking Id like you to watch this video. Its the first few minutes of last weeks “Business Agenda“ TV programme. Take notes

Woman: “Welcome to another edition of your weekly programme which looks at the latest business events. “Business Agenda“ The business world is still surprised at the latest rise in interest rates announced by the Central Bank yesterday. A full 1% was totally unexpect

21、ed. To discuss this well be talking to the Chairman of the Bank and Derek Hallam, the President of the Small Business Association. Now Derek has been in the news lately. As you may recall, he made a speech to the CBI in which he expressed his concern at the damage being done to exports by the streng

The proposed merger between the two giant chemical companies AKC and TBN is to go ahead despite objections lodged with the Monopolies Commission. Shares in the companies have increased by 10% s

29、h you decide. But Im not really sure about it at all. Ive got a good job now and Im happy where I am and not really looking for a change. It needs a lot of thought as they are a good company and . well Ive got the weekend ahead to think about everything. Man: Yes I know a lot about this company. The

30、y are very good and Ive had contact with them before, at various trade shows and advertising conferences in this country. It would be good to work for them. I would be doing the same sort of thing, except on a bigger scale. Its not a promotion or anything. The same grade and money but . more present

31、ations and a lot of consumer research. Although I like my present job, this would give me a chance to get around a bit more, to visit their overseas offices. It should mean a new chain of command, but based on tried and tested methods, well be stronger as a result. Woman: Well thats the idea. Now, the first one thats come in is from Colin. Man: The

38、 assistant manager for the south-east? Woman: Yes. Colins clearly keen. Man: But of course, its an attractive proposition. Woman: And I think thats whats drawn him. Hes said his current post is demanding - as well he might - but that hes keen to position himself in the spotlight here. Reading betwee

39、n the lines, I think the alternative, as he sees it, is to move sideways to IT, which is where his background is. It would be a shame to lose someone like him . hes hungry. Man: Yes, its a genuine application. Hes a serious contender. I was struck recently. I think it was last month, by his problem-

40、 solving abilities. He was passed a complaint - it wasnt really his problem at all - but he took it up anyway, about some faulty goods wed supplied, apparently. I think he saw it as an efficiency issue, and so relevant to any responsible person here. And he reacted really well, so that the customer

41、went away happy after all. Woman: Right, and that suggests the qualities that are most germane to the job. Ultimately, I suppose, were looking for a level of adaptability that its fair to say someone in his position may not have had the chance to really demonstrate yet, but his familiarity with the

42、goods we produce is second-to-none, so I think the signs are there that he may become an astute analyst and problem-solver. Man: Thats certainly encouraging. And its not just in the office that hes been looking good. I sent him abroad as part of that group a few weeks ago. The basic brief was to sec

43、ure a continuation of the Asian contract. To be honest, that was a bit of a given, and what I was really hoping for was something extra. And sure enough, he clearly really worked on all our contacts out there, and he came back with some great new insights into how we might be able to develop bulk sa

44、les directly through warehouses, rather than through the standard agency channels. Woman: Oh right, interesting - I missed the debrief on that one. But I do know he went on a training course not so long ago, and clearly reaped the benefits there. The content was mundane enough - how to produce effec

45、tive reports or some such - but he identified the points that really mattered, and saw that what it actually addressed was how to order the most pertinent facts for delivery to a team. Man: So, its good news all round? Woman: Lets look at what his reference has to say. He does have shortcomings, of

46、course. His confidence is very strong, almost to a fault, you might say, which could lead to difficulties on the patience front, just because he gets the point quickly doesnt mean hes entitled to think everyone else does, that they share the same conclusions, others may be behind in terms of objecti

47、vity, still grappling with issues that impact personally on themselves. Man: Hmm, thatd certainly be something to watch, I guess. Still, were not looking for perfection, are we? And were not going to be setting up a lone operator. Woman: Oh, far from it. Whoever gets the job will be well backed up.

48、I was talking to the consultants the other day, and they were quite critical of our reliance on checking performance through the one-to-one appraisal system, so its been decided that this new post will be linked into the cross-departmental advisory group that was set up a few months ago, and benefit from dealing with them and getting their input. That should help quite a bit. Man: That makes a lot of sense.
