The only thing I do miss, however, is that now, once a projects running, the teams pretty much on its own and left to solve any problem by

34、n a one-year contract. So Im traveling around Europe a lot, which I know sounds very glamorous, but its just a case of jetting in, fixing a hotels computer and then jetting out again. It also means Im on call and have flexible working hours. Im also responsible for the website, which I work on from

35、home. What I miss is support from colleagues, you know, being able to discuss problems or things like the latest technology with other IT professionals in the same job. So, yes, its definitely the social side of my job Id like to improve. M: Well, Im a temp and Im working as a PA for a law firm in L

36、os Angeles now. Its a medium-sized firm thats grown quickly so its organization is very much like that of a smaller company. OK, I know its unreasonable to expect a definite job description. I mean, if something needs doing, then I think whoevers available should do it. But Im already responsible fo

37、r managing the diaries and correspondence of two senior managers, so when the telephones ringing all day and people keep asking me to photocopy reports or even make them coffee, it just becomes impossible to get anything done. F: I work for the UK subsidiary of a Japanese company and its very Japane

38、se in terms of the way its run. Ive just got a new boss, whos come over from Japan. We seem to be getting on pretty well with each other at the moment he always has time for me and gives me lots of support. The only thing is, I dont really have a huge say in what I dowhich is all right but sometimes

39、 it would be nice to be able to show a bit of initiative. Our work processes are totally standardized as fixed routines, which I dont mind. 43、to weed out those who don t? F:(Carly Fiorina): I think the thing that Hewlett-Packard has always been wonderful at is the loyalty of its employees. What we were not so good at is dealing with employees who were not performing up to par. And so one of the changes weve had to make is to get much more

44、 focused about what is an acceptable level of performance. And if that performance is not occurring, then we have to act with that employee. We have to coach them to better performance, we have to put them in a job that is more suited to their skills; or if both of those things fail, we have to help

45、 them find another opportunity and let them depart with dignity, but let them depart. And so thats really been the focus weve historically been very good at attracting people. And interestingly, people have come to Hewlett-Packard not just because of technology, but also because of the companys valu

46、es. They like what the company stands for. Thats turned out to be a competitive advantage for us, and I think the same thing is true of John and his company. M:(John Chambers): I would agree. I think HP has the strongest culture in the valley and much of it very, very good. Keeping the culture is pr

47、obably the most challenging thing we face, so we literally put it on the board for everybody, in terms of what the culture is. along with the three to five year goals and one year objectives. And then youve got to reward people in terms of the culture that youre creating, but its more important to h

48、ave them in a nurturing environment that has the right culture. And its amazing how powerful that is in retaining employees and attract them particularly the ones that you want. M:(interviewer): In terms of staying in touch with employees, I want to ask you both about this, but I want to start with

49、you because youve got something called these birthday breakfasts. Tell us. I mean, it seems so astonishing to me that you could pull this off in a large company, but I dont want to be inaccurate, so you tell me what you do.
