In the 1990s, according to US author Eileen Shapiro, managers have abandoned the right to manage. She argues that managers in the USA have lost confidence. (0) H S

But increasingly, she feels, they do everything but that. (10) Thats because this, the identification of problems and opportunities, is the scariest part of
17、management. Managers try to avoid the anxiety it brings by simply applying the latest theory to any problem. (11) Managers should, she believes, confront these head-on. It is not that Ms Shapiro does not believe in cutting out unnecessary management layers and opening up organisations. Her criticism
18、 is that theories are often presented unthinkingly as solutions and are applied by managers who do not really understand what they are saying. “Theories are often regarded as if they are some sort of miraculous cure for any type of problem“, she says. “However, many projects have failed because theo
19、ries have been applied which were not appropriate to the situation.“ (12) The blame for this inappropriate application of theories lies, she claims, mainly at the door of consultancy firms. It is difficult for big firms of consultants to specialise sufficiently. They cannot hope to offer exactly the
20、 service that a company requires at a price which the client is able to afford. (13) This is worse than having no help at all. One of the most serious potential consequences of following theories without considering whether they are appropriate or not is a loss of staff morale and motivation. Obviou
21、sly, this is something to be avoided. (14) However, Ms Shapiro believes that, unfortunately, unless managers begin again to take responsibility for their own actions that is exactly what will happen. A. 25、 As a manager in the service industry sector, Ive looked at hundreds of CVs in my time. They are not necessarily the bland documents some bosses might think they are! They are full of little pointers towards individuals personalities and suitability for the job. The first thing I always look at is a
26、n applicants employment record. I check for continuity and stability. If somebody has a long list of previous jobs, all of varying length, alarm bells start ringing. Rather than an irregular route from job to job, what I hope to see is stable career progression. What does their career path look like
27、 - is it all steps forward, or are there a lot of sideways moves? And I am always pleased to find a family person with children, because in my experience they tend to be responsible and reliable. I never rely on CVs alone. We get applicants to fill in one of our own application forms. We ask why the
28、yve applied, what their aspirations and personal goals are, and also about their interests and hobbies and any clubs they belong to. That gives you a useful insight into their personality and lifestyle. The application form also enables us to test how much people have actually been progressing in th
29、eir careers, because we ask for details of the salaries they have received for each job. Its always worth looking at CVs and designing application forms with great care. Taking on employees might be rewarding, but it is also a big investment for any business. Mistakes in choosing staff can cost comp
30、anies dear, so it makes sense to spend time ensuring you get the right person. In the service sector, one of the aims of companies is to maintain and improve customer service, and this is achieved partly through low staff turnover. You need to take on people who understand that, and will want to sta

My management style comes from the days when I took over my first business, an ailing road haulage firm which I was certain I could turn into a profitable company. The first thing is to treat others as youd like
