Four-thousand-year-old rock carvings show that the people who lived in what is now Norway were probably the first to seek out and kill whales in the sea. By around 890 AD, 3,000 years later, th
17、e practice had spread to the Basque people of France and Spain, who hunted whales from boats in the Bay of Biscay. In the centuries that followed, Whaling became an important industry in Denmark, England, Germany, the Netherlands, and, finally, in what would become America Whaling went into dramatic
18、 decline, beginning around 1900. Today, whales are hunted commercially only by Norway, Iceland and Japan. The worlds fascination with them, however, is at an all-time high, because so few of them are left, given their tragic history. Richard Ellis writes about whales, takes pictures of whales in the
19、 open sea, and sketches whales stranded on the beach. He says its a 20-year obsession that began in the mid-1960s, when he designed a model of a great blue for the Museum of Natural History in New York. “As I began to do the research, I realized that nobody knew anything about whales. And I couldnt
20、really find any pictures of what they looked like: all I could find was pictures of dead whales. And I became very excited at the prospect of doing what seemed to be original research on something that was so peculiar, which was the largest animal that has ever lived on earth.“ So large, he discover

As he continued his research, he boarded scientific vessels, dove with whales in the Pacific, and even watched whales die at the hands of modern explosive-tipped harpoons. First of all, a little bit about the background of the project. Our title, as you can see, is pretty stra
44、ightforward: “car safety“. But these days theres a lot more to it than the usual injunctions about drinking and driving or speeding. I had been interested and horrified by several newspaper reports on what people call “road rage“. (1) For example the famous incident of a man getting out of his car i

It seemed to me that there were almost as many serious problems when cars were parked, i.e., cars were stationary, as when they were travelling at 90 miles an hour. 46、sly, according to a regional survey conducted by Drs. Arnold P. Nerenberg and R. Jerry Adams, over half of drivers in the USA suffer from road rage. The average number of incidents per road rager is 27. That means that most of us will encounter road ragers many times in our lives. Road rage can lead
47、 to injuries or even death. The U.S. Highway Safety Office has testified to Congress that tens of thousands of accidents each year can be linked directly to aggressive driving, including road rage, and it is now a leading cause of death for young children. For our research we depended mainly on talk
48、ing to individuals, asking them questions rather than using written questionnaires. We stopped people at a selected garage on the motorway over a two-day period, and asked them questions about what theyd observed or experienced themselves. Our respondents were both men and women, but the women were
49、just slightly in the majority. We were pleased by the publics willingness to stop and chat to us. in the end we talked to a total of 135 drivers over those two days. So what were our findings? Well, as you can see, 93% of respondents had had some kind of problems.
