16、“ Simonton states. “Then I had him picture an army of white blood ceils coming attacking and overcoming the cancer cells. The results of the treatment were both thrilling and frightening. Within two weeks his cancer had noticeably decreased and he was quickly gaining weight. I say it was frightening

17、 because I had never seen such a turnaround. I wasnt sure what was going on. I also didnt know what I would do if things went sour. But they didnt go sour.“ “We may believe that we have the power in our own bodies to overcome cancer. But then we have to admit that we also have the power to bring on

18、the disease in the first place. With those patients who are willing to stay with us and try, we always find that the cancer has filled some emotional need.“ Dr. Simonton urges patients to have positive self-views. Those who wish to change their beliefs and improve their self-image are given a casset

19、te tape to play three times a day. The recorded voice of Dr. Simonton speaks calmly: “Take a deep breath. Blow it out. As you blow it out, say to yourself, Relax. Now, I want you to mentally see your disease. Picture the way it seems to you. It may look like a piece of hamburger with strands going o

20、ut into other areas. However, it seems to you perfectly fine. Force yourself to draw this mental picture.“ “Now, if youre receiving radiation therapy, I want you to picture your treatment. See the treatment as a beam of millions of tiny bullets of energy coming down. They hit all the cells in the ar

21、ea. The normal cells have a great ability to repair the little bit of damage the radiation does. But the cancer cells are much less able to repair this damage, so they die. This is the whole purpose of the treatment. Picture this happening. Picture the cancer shrinking. “ The taped voice continues:

22、“If youre receiving pills by mouth, see yourself take those pills. See them melt in your stomach. Then see them going into the bloodstream. See them flow around to where the cancer is. They are poison to the cancer cells and they die. See the cancer shrink. Now the white blood cells come in and pick

That is, that is, whether crops should be used to produce food, or to, should be used to produce fuel. And u

41、m in considering this problem, I will look at three main areas. Examples of alternative energy sources include such thin

43、gs as solar power, the harnessing of wind, and wi, the wind and waves, tides, and also the production of biogas. Biogas is methane which is pro duced from human and animal waste. A particularly interesting possibility for ina developing countries has been the conversion of plant mate rial to alcohol

This, this is interesting because in many developing countries there is a large agricultural sector, and at the same time a small industrial sector, and thus the, the possibility of using the agricultural sector to, to produce fuel, urn, is of interest to those countries. Scientific research is go

45、ing on in the production of alcohol, for example, from sugar. And there are two, um, two economic reasons for tiffs. Fast of all the world price of sugar has fallen dramatically, or the world price of sugar has fallen in very real terms in the last decade, which, this has caused a problem for those

46、economies which are dependent on their sugar production as it gives them an alternative, er, possibility for using their sugar. And secondly, sugar is the most efficient source of alcohol. Therefore it is relatively economical to make fuel by distilling alcohol from it. In addition to sugar there ar

47、e other starchy plants that can be used to make alcohol. For example in tropical countries, such plants as the cassava plant and the sweet potato are good sources from which alcohol can be made, and in, in non-tropical countries you have such things as com and sugar beet. Now there is a problem aris

48、ing from the fact that alcohol can be distilled from starchy plants, and that is, that many poor countries use precisely these starchy plants, or these starch-rich crops, er, for their food as a staple diet. So in, in many such countries theres, theres a conflict ff you like, between the choice of w

49、hether to produce these crops for fuel, or to to produce these crops, er, for, for food and for their use as their staple diet. It is in fact an economic problem rather than a technical problem as the poor farmers will tend to choose that which is most profitable. Indeed it is an economic problem, not, not necessarily a technologic, al problem. The technology for the conversion of alcohol from starchy plants has been i
