Well, as far as I know, the first part of any complaint is a factual statement about what the problem is. But theres another part to learn thats more important. (2) There are students from a lo

23、t of cultures where this cultural behavior we have in the United States is of being very straightforward about what we think and what we wantthats the part that would be a lot harder for them than the linguistic part of complaining, which is just saying “Here is the problem.“ M: Its okay in the Unit

24、ed States to complain; its okay to take a product back to a store, and I think this is something that a student would have to understand before he or she could actually put the complaint into action. But Lida, how would you put this into context, into a classroom? How would you teach? W: I think in

25、teaching, (3) the first step is providing that cultural background, such as the return policy of a store, (4) and understanding that it isnt the same from one store to the next. I had an incident a few weeks ago while I bought some clothes for my daughter from a store where I just assumed that if th

26、ey didnt fit her, because she wasnt with me at the time, I just assumed that if they didnt fit I could bring them back. And they didnt fit, and I went back to the store, and to my utter surprise this store would not return my money. It would only give me a store credit or allow for an exchange. And

27、I was very shocked because I was used to shopping in stores that provided you with a full refund for your money. M: What did you say to the clerk? Im curious, how did you handle that? W: (5) I expressed my surprise. But at the same time, I reminded myself that this is not, you know, the clerks are t

28、he people in the first line of fire. But we have to remember that they are not the ones who set the store policy. This is the end of Part One of the interview. 35、ates what correction she would like the company to make. The tone is neutral; she doesnt come across as angry or demanding. Its short, you know, theres nothing extra there, so that the person reading the letter doesnt have to go hunting through the letter for what it is that happened and what the pe

36、rson wants. And getting back to the classroom now, if we wanted to give our students experience learning how to write letters of complaint, we would show them several examples. We would then give them a situation in which there was something to complain about, and we would ask them to write a simila

37、r letter using one of the models that weve provided, like the one that youve just read. What is much harder, of course, is for people to get experience complaining verbally in person. And so once we have demonstrated several scenarios in which complaining takes place, and weve analyzed the language

38、and structures that go into complaining, (9) the final step and perhaps the most important one is to give students practice complaining in a sheltered environment, in other words, in the classroom. There were no color photos and graphics, and you could never find the latest scores of sports in them. W: And then USA Today changed

48、all that? M: Definitely. For example, compared with those long stories from other newspapers, USA Today has shorter stories, most of which do not jump, or continue, from one page to another. It uses color photos, and colorful charts and graphics. It does not include much international news, but it d

Young readers have been raised watching television, so they have trouble, uh, paying attention to longer stories. They want to be entertained, not informed.
