Some people seem to have a g

10、ift for learning languages. They can pick up new words, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Before a detailed discussion about langu

11、age study, Id like to talk about some related problems. (1) These problems are encountered by students who follow a course of study through the medium of English if English is not their mother tongue. (2) The problems can be divided into three broad categories: psychological, cultural and linguistic

12、. The largest category seems to be linguistic. Most students, in their own countries, will have little opportunity to practice using English. (3) When foreign learners first have the opportunity to speak to an English-speaking person, they may have a shock: they often have great difficulty in unders

13、tanding! Ill just mention three of the possible reasons for this. First, it seems to students that English people speak very quickly. (4) Second, they speak with a variety of accents. (5) Third, different styles of speech are used. (6) For all of these reasons students will have difficulty, mainly b

14、ecause they lack everyday practice in listening to English people speaking English. So what does a successful English learner do? (7) First of all, successful English learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language: they look for such chances.

15、 They find people who speak English and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things: theyre willing to make mistakes and try again. It is more important for them to learn

16、and to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. (8) Secondly, successful English learners are independent learners. (9) They do not depend on the book or the teacher: they discover their own ways to learn English. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find t

17、he patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they try to learn from their mistakes. (10) Finally, successful English learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn English because they are interes

18、ted in it and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn English in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using English regularly because they want to learn with it. Now, to sum up todays lecture, we have analysed the problems en

19、countered by non-native English learners as well as the possible reasons for this, and then we have discussed three learning methods of a successful English learner. Today Im going to discuss the benefits of single-sex education, especially single-sex education for girls. As arguments against this form of education can be quite powerful, I wou

24、ld like to begin my lecture by pointing out three main arguments against single-sex schools. First of all, critics of all-girls schools argue that the separation of the sexes seems old-fashioned. (1) It goes against the goal of feminists and liberal educators, which is to provide fairness: to make s

25、ure boys and girls have the same educational opportunities and are treated in the same way. (2) Secondly, the critics say that in single-sex schools, boys and girls cant develop the ability to interact with one another. They point out that in single-sex schools, boys and girls cant learn how to be c

26、omfortable with each other and also how to compete with one another. (3) The third criticism is that single-sex schools dont provide children with a smooth transition into the adult world where men and women live together. In single-sex schools, these critics say, boys and girls cant become prepared

27、 for a world in which they will work, play, and live together as adults. But although these are serious arguments, I believe that single-sex education is beneficial for girls. (4) The first real benefit is that it values girls unique qualities the qualities that make them different from boys. What a

28、re these unique qualities? Well, Im going to list a few. (5) First of all, girls can often concentrate on higher-level abstract thinking at an earlier age than boys can. (6) Secondly, they can often work for longer periods of time. (7) Finally, as girls mature, they are often kind of cooperative rat

29、her than competitive. These qualities are valued in all-girls schools. (8) The second benefit is that it helps girls develop self-confidence. (9)I strongly believe that girls become more self-confident without the distraction and different learning styles of boys. In a single-sex environment, if gir

30、ls dont understand a math or science concept, theyll ask for clarification. But when they are in the same classroom with boys, they often lose their self-esteem. Boys are sometimes louder and may jump up out of their seats and wave their arms at peoples faces if they know the answer to a teachers qu

31、estion. If this happens, girls typically sink back in their chairs and wait for the boys to quiet down. (10) But if there are no boys around, girls can feel free and be themselves. OK, having said all these, I want to emphasize that single-sex education is beneficial for girls. Admittedly, in the “r

32、eal“ adult world, boys are the ones who set the rules of the game, and these rules dont necessarily reflect the needs or talents of girls no matter how well they do in school. However, in an all-girls school, girls can become confident enough to challenge these rules. And then, perhaps, they can cha

33、nge the “real“ adult world into a place designed to help both women and men. OK, thats all for todays lecture.
