Then, there was a sharp increase in the value of the dollar to 1.6 per pound in 1977. The US dollar then gradually lost value until, in 1980, it was at the rate of 2.3 to the p
6、ound. It remained at this level in 1981 before rapidly increasing in value to 1.8 dollars per pound in 1982 and then to 1.5 dollars per pound in 1983. The dollar continued to appreciate in value at a more gradual pace until it stood at 1.2 dollars per pound in 1985, its highest rate over the period
