Ordering Information4.1 Orders for the material under this specification shallinclude the following information:4.1.1
、 The name of material (steel slag coarse aggregateand/or steel slag fine aggregate).4.1.2 The specification designation and year of issue.4.1.3 The grading of the aggregate to be furnished, byreference to a size number in Classification D448 for coarseaggregate, grading number in Specification D1073

General Characteristics5.1 The coarse and fine aggregates shall consist of hard, tough, durable pieces of steel slag as defined in
、 3.1.1. Theaggregates shall be processed, as necessary to meet therequirements of this specification, by crushing or screening, orboth, and magnetic separation for the removal of metallics. Atthe time of delivery, the aggregates shall not contain injuriousamounts of foreign materials such as clay, l
、oam, wood, trampmetal, unhydrated lime, or other deleterious materials.6. Physical Requirements6.1 Coarse Aggregate:6.1.1 GradingThe coarse aggregate grading shall conformto the requirements of Classification D448 for the size numberdesignated, or to another grading as stated in the order (Note3).NO
、TE 3The coarse aggregate grading to be furnished is dependentupon the desired composition of the paving mixture, and whether thegrading to be used in the mixture is achieved with or without blending.Other coarse aggregate gradings may be used provided that the combinedaggregates and filler, when use

、rial under this specification shall state the appropriaterequirements for percentage of fractured particles.6.1.2.1 Conventional mixtures, not less than 40 % by mass,of the aggregate particles retained on the 4.75-mm (No. 4)sieve shall have at least one fractured face (Notes 4 and 5).6.1.2.2 Open gr
、aded friction course mixtures, of the aggre-gate particles retained on the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve, not lessthan 90 % by mass, shall have one or more fractured faces and75 % by mass, two or more fractured faces.NOTE 4Attention is called to the distinction between conventional(dense mixtures or open mi
、xtures) and open-graded friction coursemixtures in Specification D3515.NOTE 5Some sources of aggregate contain angular particles that willperform similarly to a mechanically fractured particle. Where laboratorytests or service records indicate this to be true, such angular particles maybe considered
、 as fractured.6.1.3 Polishing CharacteristicsThe coarse aggregates, orthe coarsest fraction of the aggregate for use in surface coursemixtures, shall be of a type known to possess adequateresistance to polishing action of the anticipated traffic (Note 6).NOTE 6No ASTM standard has been recognized to
、 be capable ofdefining adequate resistance to the polishing action of specific trafficconditions. Test Method D3319 has been found useful in evaluating therelative polish resistance between samples of different aggregates ormixtures containing different aggregates.6.1.4 SoundnessThe coarse aggregate
、, when subjected tofive cycles of the soundness test (see Test Method C88), shallhave a mass loss not greater than 12 % when sodium sulfate isused or 18 % when magnesium sulfate is used. If the salt is notdesignated by the purchaser, the aggregate shall be acceptableif it meets the indicated limit f

、 the size numberdesignated, or to another grading as designated in the order(Note 7).NOTE 7The fine aggregate grading to be furnished is dependent uponthe desired composition of the paving mixture, and whether the grading tobe used in the mixture is achieved with or without blending. Other fineaggre

、blending as specified.6.2.3 Grading VariabilityFor continuing shipments of fineaggregate from a given source, the fineness modulus shall notvary more than 0.25 from the base fineness modulus (Note 8).The base fineness modulus shall be that value that is typical ofthe source. The base fineness modulu

、Base fineness modulus of the fine aggregate has a greatinfluence on proportioning of bituminous mixtures; therefore, largeD5106 152changes in its value may make adjustments in the mixture necessary.6.2.4 Plasticity index of the fine aggregate fraction smallerthan the 425m (No. 40) sieve shall not ex
