、Designation: E 1522 93 (Reapproved 2008)Standard Specification forAutoclavable Protective Coatings on Laboratory Glassware1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E 1522; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision,

、the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers the requirements for autocla-vable protective coatings on laboratory glassware u

、p to andincluding the 4L size. These coatings will not prevent theescape of liquids from vessels under pressure.2. Chemical Resistance2.1 The physical resistance (see 3.1) of the coating shall beacceptable after continuous exposure for one hour to acids,(other than chromic), alcohols, bases, aliphat

、ic hydrocarbons(except as noted below) and oxidizing agents at room tempera-ture. The intent of the coating is to allow enough time afterbreakage for proper disposal, not for continued use.2.2 The coating shall not be required to withstand exposureto aldehydes, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, halogen

、ated hy-drocarbons or ketones.3. Physical Resistance3.1 The thickness and character of the undamaged coatingshall be such that it will not permit the immediate total loss ofliquid at 15C to 70C from a protected stoppered or cappedcontainer filled to rated capacity when dropped from a heightof 40 in.

、 onto a floor made of18 in. maximum vinyl tile overconcrete, but will prevent the escape of glass.4. Autoclavability4.1 The coating shall withstand 15 min autoclave cycles at121C and 15 psig, although some air pockets under thecoating and some other surface depressions may becomepermanent. Some mois

、ture may be absorbed through thecoating during autoclaving and cause a slight clouding, but thisclouding must be removable by oven drying at not over 110C.Drying time will vary depending on size and configuration ofvessel.4.1.1 Coating life will vary depending on size and configu-ration of vessel an

、d size and procedure of autoclave used. Alsoallow coating to clear and dry before repeating autoclave cycle.4.2 CAUTION: Loosen or remove all caps or closuresbefore autoclaving and allow autoclave pressure to return tozero before removing glassware to minimize the formation ofair pockets under the c

、oating. Also allow coating to clear anddry before repeating autoclave cycle. Vacuum drying maydistort the coating.5. Temperature5.1 This coating should not be exposed to dry heat above110C or moist heat above 121C. However, prolonged expo-sure to either dry or wet heat will cause discoloration andem

、brittlement. Discolored coatings may no longer be usable.Manufacturers should be consulted for specific applications.6. Microwaving6.1 Containers filled with aqueous solutions and having drycoatings (no obvious moisture under or on them) shall with-stand microwaving provided that the 110C temperatur

、e limitis not exceeded. Wet coatings may develop steam pockets andcause the coatings to separate.6.1.1 Coating life will vary depending on size and configu-ration of vessel, temperature achieved and time at suchtemperature.6.2 CAUTION: Loosen or remove all caps or closuresbefore microwaving.7. Therm

、al Combustion7.1 Combustion of various coatings will result in the releaseof certain chemicals. Combustion of PVC, for example, willresult in the release of the major combustion products ofcarbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride andwater. Provision should be made to deal appropriately wit

、hsuch combustion products if combustion occurs.8. Flammability8.1 The coating shall not ignite and burn when exposed toopen flame, hot electric heating elements or other sources ofheat that are capable of initiating combustion.9. Color9.1 The coating may be clear or colored at the option of themanuf
