、ed to Inside back coverBS3248:1986 ii BSI 08-1999 Foreword This revision of BS 3248 has been prepared under the direction of the Furniture and Household Equipment Standards Committee. It supersedes BS3248:1960 which is withdrawn. This revision provides more objective requirements, related to current

、 designs and manufacturing methods, than the previous edition and is now completely metric. The purpose of a sparkguard is to reduce the probability of sparks from exposed burning fuel igniting nearby combustible material. A sparkguard would normally be used when a room is unoccupied with the fire a

、light and should not be expected to protect people from falling into the fire, for which purpose a fireguard complying with BS 6539 is necessary. A sparkguard complying with the requirements of this standard may be fitted within a fireguard complying with BS6539 to provide all round protection. A sp

、arkguard should be selected to cover the fireplace opening, and those of the minimum dimensions specified in this standard are considered suitable for fireplace openings of up to470mm in width; for a wider opening a correspondingly larger sparkguard is necessary. Attention is drawn to the Children a

、nd Young Persons Act 1933 (23 Geo. 5) (Ch12) Section 11 and the Children and Young Persons (Amendment) Act1952(15 + 16 Geo. 6 + 1 Eliz. 2 Ch 50) Section 8. The provisions of these Acts cover the exposure of children under twelve to the risk of burning by an unguarded fire-grate or heating appliance.

、 A sparkguard is not considered a suitable guard for the purpose of these Acts. NOTEFor Scotland, the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937 declares the age to be under seven. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standar

、ds are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standar

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3248:1986 BSI 08-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for the design, construction, performance, marking and labelling of

、 free-standing mesh sparkguards intended for use with solid mineral fuel and wood-burning appliances inset within a fireplace surround and hearth in which the top surface of the hearth is level with the bottom of the fire opening. Sparkguards with the minimum dimensions specified in this standard ar

、e suitable for fireplace openings up to470mm wide. Requirements for stable location are specified but no requirement for the fixing of a sparkguard is considered necessary. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Design and construction

、NOTETypical features of a sparkguard as referred to in this clause are illustrated by Figure 1. 2.1 The sparkguard shall be of metal construction and free from sharp points and edges. The metal(s) used shall not have a melting point of less than750 C. 2.2 The mesh section of the sparkguard shall not

、 cause obscuration greater than 40%, calculated from the area of the material of the mesh projected onto a parallel plane as compared with the total projected area of the mesh. The maximum area of any aperture shall not exceed10mm 2with individual wires not less than0.5mm in diameter. Foldable spark

、guards shall have no openings, at the junction of panels, exceeding 3.5 mm in their shortest dimension. NOTEThis figure is intended to be illustrative of a typical sparkguard but does not otherwise form part of the standard. Figure 1 Features of a typical sparkguardBS3248:1986 2 BSI 08-1999 2.3 The

、sparkguard shall be capable of completely covering a rectangular fireplace opening 470mm wide and 560mm high. The depth of the sparkguard shall not be less than100mm at the point of maximum depth of the base. 2.4 The sparkguard shall be provided with a means for removal or adjustment with respect to

、 a lighted fire such that this can be carried out without the need for the hand to come into contact with any surface heated directly by radiation. NOTEAn example of a suitable means is a ring situated on the upper front surface of the sparkguard capable of being securely grasped by tongs. 3 Perform

、ance 3.1 Finish 3.1.1 Heat resistance of finish. The sparkguard shall have a hard and stable finish, capable of withstanding4h at 180 C when tested in accordance with the preferred method of clause 6 of BS 3900-G7:1976. Immediately following the test period the finish shall show no signs of discolor

、ation, flaking or melting. It shall not be possible to remove or damage any part of the finish by vigorous rubbing with a hand-held cloth or by swift removal of an applied self-adhesive tape. The tape 1)used shall have a specific adhesion to stainless steel of 750 100 g/cm when removed at180 and at

、approximately 1 m/s. 3.1.2 Flame resistance of finish. There shall be no spread of flame exceeding an area of1000mm 2when any part of the sparkguard is suspended horizontally for 5s at a height of60mm above a spirit burner complying with the constructional requirements of section 2 of BS 5865:1980 a

、nd operated as described in section 3 of BS5865:1980. 3.2 Strength 3.2.1 Rigidity. The centre of the front surface of the sparkguard shall be capable of supporting a force of50 N for 1min and shall not suffer a permanent deformation of more than 10mm when tested in accordance with the method given i

、n Appendix A. Following the test of Appendix A, all joints of the frame shall be intact and there shall have been no movement of the mesh, with respect to the frame, visible to the unaided eye. 3.2.2 Strength of joints. All joints, including the hinges of foldable sparkguards and the securing of the

、 mesh to the frame and of the removal/adjustment means to the guard, shall be capable of withstanding a direct pull of100 N. Clips joining panels of foldable sparkguards shall not unfasten when subjected to a direct pull of 25 N. 3.3 Stability The sparkguard shall return spontaneously to the normal

、upright position following being tilted back and then released on a level surface, in any direction away from the fire opening in normal use, until the base makes an angle of15 with the horizontal. 4 Marking and labelling 4.1 Marking Each sparkguard shall be permanently and legibly marked with the f

、ollowing: a) the name or identification mark of the responsible UK manufacturer, distributor or vendor; b) the number of this British Standard, i.e.BS3248:1986 2) . 4.2 Labelling The sparkguard shall have affixed to it a label or swing ticket giving the following information: a) identification of th

、e product as a sparkguard intended for use when the room is unoccupied; b) that a sparkguard does not give adequate protection to children and the infirm against falling into the fire, or burning by contact with the sparkguard, for which purposes a fireguard complying with BS 6539 is necessary; c) t
