SCOPE This specification defines the material requirements for thermoplastic nylon (Type 11) powder coatings electrostatically sprayed to primed metal substrates. The coatings shall provide goo
3、d appearance, durability, corrosion resistance and low friction index properties. 2. APPLICATION This specification was released originally for nylon powder coatings used on steel lower outside windshield moldings. The moldings provide the resting place for the windshield wipers. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1
4、 COMPOSITION 3.1.1 Specific Composition When it is necessary to obtain specific data regarding powder coating formulations, suppliers will furnish such data on request. 3.1.3 Toxicity All suppliers of raw powder to a Ford Motor Company facility must provide a toxicological study to the Industrial Hy
5、giene Department of the Ford Motor Company for evaluation of any potential health hazards associated with the use of their product. 3.2 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 3.2.1 Specific Gravity (ASTM D 792) Black 1.05 - 1.12 The specific gravity will vary with each color, since pigment density is variable. 3.2.2 P
6、article Size, max 5% retained on a 200 mesh screen (74 m) (ASTM D 1921) 0% retained on a 140 mesh screen (105 m) 3.2.3 Shelf Stability The powder must be capable of satisfactory application without conditioning after 6 month storage at 20 +/- 5 C. 7、ight 2011, Ford Global Technologies, LLC Page 2 of 5 3.3 PREPARATION OF TEST PANELS Test panels shall be prepared as described by ASTM D 3451 with the following specific requirements: 3.3.1 Use PTQ unpolished, cold rolled steel or equivalent (see para 5.2). 3.3.2 Zinc phosphate per ESB-M3P1. 3.3.3 P
8、rime per ESB-M64J19 to .0007 in (18 m) cured film thickness (bake 10 min at 182 C metal temp.) 3.3.4 Electrostatically spray apply the nylon powder coating and cure as follows: 3.3.4.1 Bake Schedule, min 3 min at 220 C metal temp. 3.3.4.2 Cured Film Thickness, min .0040 in (FLTM BI 117-01) (102 m) P
9、anels shall be aged 16 h at 43 C or 72 h above 23 +/- 2 C before testing for resistance properties. 3.4 FILM PROPERTIES 3.4.1 Color (FLTM BI 109-01) Shall match the standard color panel issued by AAD Paint Operations and concurred in by the Design Center. 3.4.2 Gloss (FLTM BI 110-01, using glossmete

14、BP 003-02 for fixture, cross-head speed, chart speed and load range. Mount a coated 4 x 4 in (100 x 100 mm) test panel on the aluminum plate with “C“ clamps. Attach a 1 x 1 in (25 x 25 mm) square of #10 cotton duck to one side of a 1 x 1 x 1 in (25 x 25 x 25 mm) cube of steel, weighing 125 +/- 5 g w
15、ith double coated adhesive tape or a suitable adhesive. Place the cube on the coated panel with the cotton duck against the coated surface. Attach the wire or non-stretch cord to the steel cube, through the pully on the back edge of the plate, and into the jaw of the Instron unit. Place the 5 lb (2.
16、3 kg) weight on the steel cube, start test with no tension, and allow to run at least 2 in (50 mm) on the coated panel. Note: The cube shall remain parallel to the pulling direction throughout the test. Record the friction in lb (N) (maximum reading). 3.5.5 Condensing Humidity, min 240 h (FLTM BI 10

20、 washer solvent (ESB-M8B15-B) as follows: Test Method: Apply 5 - 10 drops of concentrated washer solvent on a coated test panel and let stand at room temperature for 3 min. Wipe off and let coating recover for 30 s before examining. 3.5.10 Accelerated Weathering Resistance, min 3.5.10.1 (FLTM BO 101
21、-01) 1600 h (XW Atlas Weatherometer) 3.5.10.2 (ASTM G-53-77) 1000 h (Atlas UVCON (or equivalent with a cycle of 4 h UV exposure at 60 C and 4 h condensing humidity at 50 C) The coating shall show a minimum degree of fading, chalking, dulling or color change. No increase of brittleness or loss of adhesion is permitted and the coating shall be completely free from evidence of, cracking, checking, blistering, peeling or rusting after exposure. 3.5.11 Natural Weathering Resistance 3.5.11.1 Florida Exposure, min 12 mo
23、nths (5 facing south in Miami area) The coating shall show a minimum degree of fading, chalking, dulling or color change. No greater loss of gloss is permitted than equivalent approved production colors. No increase of brittleness or loss of adhesion is permitted and the coating shall be completely
24、free from evidence of cracking checking, blistering, peeling or rusting after exposure. 3.5.11.2 Water Resistance after Florida Exposure After panels have completed 12 months Florida exposure, they shall be tested for 24 h water immersion (FLTM BI 104-01). Upon removal of panels from water, immediat
25、ely scribe a small “X“ near the bottom of the panel. Dry the panel with an absorbent towel and immediately apply ESF-M3G46 tape with firm thumb pressure. Remove the tape by pulling one end at a 90 angle with moderate speed. There shall be no removal of paint beyond 1/16 in (1.6 mm) from scribe lines
26、. There shall be no evidence of blistering. 27、 present in powdered material. 3.7 HANDLING PRECAUTION This material shall be considered as relatively non-toxic compared to liquid paint. However, care should be taken to avoid prolonged exposure to the skin. This material should be used in a closed system to reduce the possibility of breathing the
28、 powder. 5. 29、ermoplastic Nylon 5.2 PANEL INFORMATION 5.2.1 Standard unpolished, bimetallic coachjoint, aluminum, and galvanized steel test panels are available from the Parker Co., 322 Main Street, Morenci, Michigan 49256. 5.2.2 Steel for PTQ test panels is periodically selected by the Materials and Corrosion Pr
30、otection Engineering Department from coils representative of production steel employed in Ford production body panels. This steel is specified for many primer salt spray tests and may be procured from the Materials and Corrosion Protection Engineering Department in panel form either phosphated or oiled.
