2、of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers lightweight, flexible polyimide foam as a layered thermal acoustic insulation barrier material developed for use within a specific frequency range on submarines. 1.2 Classification Type I: Polyimide foam composite layers wit

REQUIREMENTS 3.1 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be sub- jected to first

16、 article inspection (see 6.4) in accordance with 4.3. 3.2 Material. The basic material shall be flexible polyimide foam. 3.2.1 Type I barrier material shall consist of a composite of 0.5 inch flexible polyimide foam layers conforming to DOD-1-24688, type I. of flexible polyimide foam shall be bonded

17、 to a polyphosphazene/barium sulfate sheet weighing 30 f 10 percent ounces per square yard. barium sulfate sheet shall cover 100 percent of the polyimide foam surface. On the outer layer, a single glass cloth outer facing (see 3.3) shall be bonded to a polyphosphazene/barium sulfate sheet weighing 3

22、8( SH) O 3.6 Toxicitx. The material shall have no adverse effect on the health of personnel when used for its intended purpose (see 4.5.2). Questions perti- nent to this effect shall be referred by the contracting activity to the Commander, Naval Medical Command (MEDCOM-02) who will act as an adviso

23、r to the contracting activity# 3.7 Edge preparation. There shall be no adhesives or barrier treatments on the face of the vertical edges of the flexible polyimide foam between septum layers (see 4.5.3). 3.8 Fire resistance. Type I material shall have a flame spread rate of 25 or less and smoke devel

24、opment of 150 or less when tested as specified in 4.5.4. method in the Appendix. Type I class 3 materials shall also be tested in accordance with the Flashover time shall be greater than 10 minutes. 3.9 Insertion loss. The type I class 3 composite barrier material specified in 3.2.1 shall have an in

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4 I 1 Responsibility for inspection, Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of

Except as otherwise specified in the contract of purchase order, the con- tractor may use his own or any other facilities for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Govern-

30、ment. forth in this specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to ensure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set 4.1 . 1 Responsibility for compliance. All items shall meet all require- ments of

34、spection. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified as follows: (a) (b) First article inspection (see 4.3). Quality conformance inspection (see 4.4). 4.3 First article inspection. First article inspection shall consist of the examinations and tests specified in 4.3.1 and 4.5 (see 6

35、.3). 4.3.1 First article tests. Prior to production, first article tests shall be conducted on a sample to determine the conformance with all the tests and requirements herein (see 6.4). identical in composition and equivalent in manufacture to the material to be supplied later for quality conforman

36、ce inspection. The first article sample shall comply with all the requirements specified herein. The test material shall be certified to be 4.4. Quality conformance inspection. Quality conformance inspection shall be as specified in table I (see 6.3). 4.5 Peel strength Edges Flexibility 4.5.1 4.5.3

37、4.5.6 Test methods and procedures. 4.5.1 Peel strength. Peel strength shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D 2724 (see 3.5). 4.5.1.1 Strength of adhesion. The strength of adhesion shall be deter- mined by pulling/separating polyphosphazene barium loaded film from the flex- ible polyimide foam

38、 material and examining for compliance to 3.5.1. 4.5.2 Toxicological formulation. To determine conformance to require- ments of 3.2.1, the manufacturer of the compound shall disclose the formu- lation of this product to the Commander, Naval Medical Command (MEDCOM-02) Washington, D.C. 20372 for appr

39、oval. The disclosure of proprietary informa- tion, which shall be held in confidence by the Navy Medical Command, shall include the name, formula, and approximate percentage by weight and volume of each ingredient in the product; the results of any toxicological testing of 5 Provided by IHSNot for R

41、isposal, or combustion of the material. 4.5.3 Edges. Type 1 composites shall be supplied with clean cut 90 degress vertical cut edges (see 3.7). 4.5.4 Fi.re resistance. Type 1 material shall be tested in accordance with ASTM E 162 as follows: (a) With the glass cloth cover facing the heat source. (b

42、) With the flexible polyimide foam facing the heat source. Type I material shall also be tested in accordance with the method in the Appendix . A minimum of 16 square feet (4 each 2 foot square) of composite barrier, type I class 1, 2 and 3 materials (specified in 3.2) shall be tested for insertion

43、loss (see 3.9). The tests shall be performed according to procedures and at facilities approved by NAVSEA. One layer of 1/2 inch thick barrier material, type I, class 1 as per installed configuration, 12 by 18 inches shall be cut and bent through an arc of 90 degrees on its 12 inch dimension over a

44、1-inch dia- meter mandrel. The mandrel shall be long enough to extend at least 2 inches beyond the ends of the test specimen, The specimen shall be maintained in the flexed position for 5 minutes before being released and then examined for compliance with 3.10. 4.5.5 Insertion loss. 4.5.6 Flexibilit

45、x. 4.5.7 Thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity, “K“, of the thermal acoustic insulation barrier material shall be determined in the installed configuration and as specified in ASTM C 177 (see 3.11 ) . 4.6 $wpection of packagi,nq. PACKAGING (The packaging requirements specified herein apply only for direct Government acquisition. requirements of referenced docume

47、nts listed in section 2, (see 6.5). For the extent of applicability of the packaging 5.1, General 5.1.1 Navy fire-retardant requirements. (a) Treated lumber and plywood. Unless otherwise specified (see 6,2), all lumber and plywaod including laminated veneer material used in shipping containers and p
