、e Havens and Interchange Lots for Vehicles Transporting Explosives 2018 Edition This edition of NFPA 498, Standard for Safe Havens and Interchange Lots for Vehicles Transporting Explosives, was prepared by the Technical Committee on Explosives. It was issued by the Standards Council on November 10,

、2017, with an effective date of November 30, 2017, and supersedes all previous editions. This edition of NFPA 498 was approved as an American National Standard on November 30, 2017. Origin and Development of NFPA 498 This standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Explosives to address the

、 special requirements of motor vehicle terminals specically designed to handle cargoes of explosive materials. It was tentatively adopted at the 1969 NFPA Annual Meeting and ofcially adopted at the 1970 NFPA Annual Meeting. Several amendments were adopted at the 1976 and 1982 NFPA Annual Meetings. I

、n 1986, 1990, and 1992, the document was reconrmed. Formerly titled Explosives Motor Vehicle Terminals, the 1996 edition of NFPA 498 was a complete revision. The 1996 edition more completely addressed the re, theft, and explosion hazards that exist when explosive materials are present in parked vehi

、cles in safe havens and in explosives interchange lots. The 2001 edition of NFPA 498 incorporated various editorial amendments. The 2006 edition included a complete revision based on the Manual of Style for NFPA Technical Committee Documents and incorporated minor editorial changes to the standard.

、The 2010 edition represented a reconrmation of the technical requirements in the standard. Minor editorial changes were made for consistency with the NFPA Manual of Style for NFPA Technical Committee Documents. The 2013 edition of NFPA 498 included updated references and incorporated minor editorial

、 changes to the standard. The 2018 edition of NFPA 498 adds a requirement to Chapter 4 preventing the location of safe havens within certain distances of schools or hospitals, as it would be difcult to move the occupants of such buildings in the case of an incident in the safe haven. Additionally, a
