5、isconnects are suitable for may have one or more conductors per contact.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:a) As noted in clause 1.3 of UL 2459, Luminaire Disconnects were initially used internal to luminaries,such as a fluorescent luminaire, to facilitate replacement of the ballast. These products are now used

6、 toretrofit LED modules with an Edison screw base adaptor. These LED retrofits use a power supply ratherthan a ballast.While a luminaire connector was not covered for an LED retrofit application, the concept and overallsimilarity of application, ballast vs. power supply, has been used by the UL as r

7、ationale to accept thisconnector in LED retrofit applications. Consequently, an expansion of clause 1.3 is proposed to addressthis allowance.Clause 1.3 is being revised to more clearly address the Luminaire application.b) Clause 1.3 of standard 2459 states that Ballast Disconnect type connectors may

8、 not be directlyattached to the branch circuit conductors. When this was first discussed, it was intended that this wouldprevent the Ballast Disconnect connector from being used to splice branch circuit conductors together.Ballast Disconnect connectors should not be used as a splicing wire connector

9、.Clause 1.2 states, These connectors are intended to facilitate the connection of devices, such asprefabricated wiring assemblies, smoke detectors, and lighting products, to the branch circuit conductorsof buildings. This clause makes it apparent that these connectors should be connected to the bran

10、chcircuit conductors.UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULThe definition of a Luminaire Disconnect (clause 2.2.10) is - a mating wire connector (separable typeconnector) intended to facilitate replacement of the ballast. This defini

11、tion allows the Ballast Disconnectto be connected directly to the branch circuit conductors. Most existing Luminaire devices in service todayare connected directly to a branch circuit.Rule 30-308(4) of the Canadian Electrical Code states that (a) provided with a disconnecting meansintegral with the

12、luminaire that simultaneously opens all circuit conductors between the branch circuit andthe conductors supplying the ballast(s);The tests in UL 2459 are based on the requirements from UL 486C and CSA C22.2 #188 for SplicingWire Connectors. This intention of UL 2459 is to allow the Ballast Disconnec

13、t to be connected to thebranch circuit conductors. In addition within clause 1.3 the Ballast Disconnect is referred to as a wireconnector.Present industry practice is to insert the Ballast Disconnect between the branch circuit conductors andthe Ballast Disconnect. The Authority Having Jurisdiction i

14、n the United States and Canada have approvedthese installations.There have been no safety issues or complaints concerning Ballast Disconnects connected between thebranch circuit conductors and the ballast wires.Clause 1.3 is in direct conflict with clause 1.2, the definition of a Luminaire Disconnec
