Th

6、esevalves are intended for installation in sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA 13.2 Components2.1 Except as indicated in 2.2, a component of a product covered by this Outline of Investigation shallcomply with the requirements for that component.2.2 A component need not comply with a specific r

7、equirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteristic not needed in the application of the component in theproduct covered by this Outline of Investigation; orb) Is superseded by a requirement in this Outline of Investigation.2.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established

10、all be interpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.MAY 17, 2004SUBJECT 25845 Glossary5.1 For the purpose of this Outline of Investigation, the following definitions apply.5.2 BALL VALVE A valve incorporating a closure mechanism that consists of a ported sphereinstalled wi

11、thin the valve body. Rotation of the sphere by 90 degrees changes the position from open toclose. These valves are typically provided with a handle type operating mechanism with stationarystops.5.3 BUTTERFLY VALVE A valve incorporating a closure mechanism that consists of a verticallyorientated disc

12、 installed within the valve body. Rotation of the disc by 90 degrees changes the positionfrom open to closed. These valves are typically provided with a handle type operating mechanism withstationary stops.5.4 GLOBE VALVE A valve incorporating a closure mechanism , usually in disc or plug form, that

13、 ismoved by an actuator stem perpendicular to a ring-shaped seat. These valves can be provided instraight, angle or Y type body configurations. The operating mechanism consists of a handwheel.5.5 PLUG (TAPER) VALVE A valve that is similar to the ball valve, except that the closure device isa tapered

14、 plug instead of a ball. The operating mechanism typically consists of a handle with stationarystops.5.6 SHUTOFF VALVE A ball, butterfly, globe, plug or other valve intended to be used as a shutoffvalve for trim and drain purposes in sprinkler systems.CONSTRUCTION6 Valve Sizes6.1 Shutoff valves shal

15、l be constructed for nominal pipe sizes having a 2-inch maximum diameter.7 Rated Pressure7.1 A shutoff valve shall be constructed for a minimum rated pressure of 175 psig (1.24 MPa).MAY 17, 2004 SUBJECT 258 58 Materials8.1 These valves shall be made of brass, bronze, or other material having equival

16、ent corrosion resistantproperties, except for the handle.8.2 A casting shall be smooth, free from scale, lumps, cracks, blisters, sand holes, and defects that wouldimpair its intended use. A casting shall not be plugged or filled.9 Opening Characteristics9.1 A valve shall open by turning the handle,

17、 handwheel, or plug counterclockwise, except whenspecifically ordered otherwise to fit existing equipment.9.2 A valve that incorporates a 90-degree closure mechanism such as a ball, butterfly or plug valve shallbe provided with closing and opening stationary stops.10 Inlet and Outlet Threads and Oth

18、er Attachment Means10.1 A valve incorporating inlet and outlet threaded ends shall be provided with NPT threads complyingwith the Standard for Pipe Threads, ANSI/ASTM B1.20.1 or other national pipe thread standards.10.2 A threaded section of the valve body intended for connection to pipe shall be pr

19、ovided with a sectionto serve as a wrench grip.10.3 Valves incorporating end connections for brazing or soldering (sweated joints) shall be constructedso that nonmetallic components such as seals or gaskets are removable while heat is being applied duringassembly of the joint.Exception: Assembled va

20、lves intended to be joined by solder sweating with the nonmetallic componentsinstalled within the valve shall comply with the seat and body leakage tests at twice the rated pressureafter being soldered to a section of copper pipe on each end of the valve. See 14.2.PERFORMANCE11 General11.1 Represent

21、ative samples of each size valve shall be subjected to the tests specified in Sections 12 16. Samples of parts constructed of elastomeric materials, such as rubber seals, are required forphysical tests.MAY 17, 2004SUBJECT 258612 10-Day Moist Ammonia Air Stress Cracking Test12.1 After being subjected

22、 to the conditions described in 12.2 12.4, a brass part containing more than15 percent zinc when examined using 25X magnification shall:a) Show no evidence of cracking; orb) Comply with the Leakage Test and Mechanical Strength Test in Sections 14 and 16, whenthere is evidence of cracking.12.2 Each t

23、est sample is to be subjected to the physical stresses normally imposed on or within a part asthe result of assembly with other components. Such stresses are to be applied to the sample prior to andmaintained during the test. Samples with threads, intended to be used for installing the product in th

24、e field,are to have the threads engaged and tightened to the torque specified in Table 12.1. 26、chamber having a glass cover.12.4 A sufficient amount of aqueous ammonia to cover the bottom of the chamber and having a specificgravity of 0.94 is to be maintained during the test. The samples are to be positioned 1-1/2 (+1/2, -0) inches(38.1 mm) (12.7 mm, -0 mm) below the bottom of the samples and

27、 supported by an inert tray. The moistammonia-air mixture in the chamber is to be maintained at atmospheric pressure with the temperatureconstant at 93 2F (34 1C).12.5 After the exposure period, the test samples are to be examined using a microscope having amagnification of 25X for any cracking, del

28、amination or other degradation as a result of the test exposure.Parts exhibiting degradation as a result of the test exposure, shall be tested for compliance with theLeakage Tests, Section 14, and the Mechanical Strength Test, Section 16.MAY 17, 2004 SUBJECT 258 713 Elastomeric Parts Test (Except Ga

29、skets)13.1 An elastomeric part used to provide a seal shall have the following properties when tested asspecified in the Standard for Gaskets and Seals, UL 157:a) For silicone rubber (having poly-organo-siloxane as its constituent characteristic), a minimumtensile strength of 500 psi (3.4 MPa) and a

30、 minimum ultimate elongation of 100 percent.b) For natural rubber and synthetic rubber other than silicone rubber, a minimum tensilestrength of 1500 psi (10.3 MPa) and minimum ultimate elongation of 150 percent; or a minimumtensile strength of 2200 psi (15.2 MPa) and a minimum ultimate elongation of

31、 100 percent.c) Those properties relating to maximum tensile set; minimum tensile strength and elongationafter oven aging; and hardness after oven aging, all as specified in UL 157. The maximumservice temperature used to determine the oven time and temperature for oven aging is to be60C (140F).13.2

32、The Standard for Gaskets and Seals, UL 157, provides for the testing of either finished elastomericparts or sheet or slab material. Sheet or slab material is to be tested when the elastomeric parts areO-rings having diameters of less than 1 inch (25.4 mm). The material tested is to be the same as th

33、at usedin the product, regardless of whether finished elastomeric parts or sheet or slab material is tested.14 Leakage Test14.1 General14.1.1 A valve shall withstand for 1 minute, without leakage at joints, at the valve seat, or at the sealprovided for the stem, an internal hydrostatic pressure of t

34、wice the rated pressure of the valve.14.2 Seat leakage14.2.1 The inlet of each valve is to be connected to a water supply and the valve is to be closed,pressurized to a rated working pressure, and examined for leakage on the downstream side of the valve.The valve is then to be pressurized to twice r

35、ated working pressure and again examined for leakage. Ifthe valve is bi-directional, both ends of the valve are to be subjected to the seat leakage test.14.2.2 Valves intended to be joined by solder sweating with the nonmetallic components installed withinthe valve shall have copper pipe soldered to

36、 each end of the valve using solder containing approximately95 percent tin and 5 percent antimony, prior to conducting the seat leakage test described in 14.2.1.MAY 17, 2004SUBJECT 258814.3 Body leakage14.3.1 After completion of the valve seat leakage test specified in 14.2, the outlet of the valve

37、is to beclosed by a cap or the equivalent. The valve is to be partially opened resulting in pressurization of theentire valve body to rated pressure and examined for leakage. The valve then is to be then pressurizedto twice the rated pressure and again examined for leakage.15 Strength of Body Test15

38、.1 An assembled valve that is partially opened shall withstand for 1 minute without rupture an internalhydrostatic test pressure of five times the rated pressure.15.2 The valve outlet shall be suitably blanked off or plugged and the inlet connected to a hydrostaticpressure source. All air is to be v

39、ented from the test sample. With the sealing assembly open, the samplevalve assembly shall be internally hydrostatically pressurized at 5 times the rated working pressure, butnot less than 40 bar (6,0 MPa), for a period of 1 minute.15.3 This test is not an evaluation for leakage at the gaskets or se

40、als, therefore, leakage at the joints ispermitted.16 Mechanical Strength Test16.1 Valves with handles16.1.1 There shall be no malfunction of the stem assembly, handle and other operating parts when thevalves are subjected to the mechanical strength tests specified in 16.1.2 16.1.5.16.1.2 Valve sampl

41、es for this test are to be held in a vise or by other equivalent means. A force is to beapplied at a location 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) from end of handle and measured using a load-measuring devicesecured to the handle.16.1.3 The force required to open and close the valve under the rated pressure is to be

42、recorded.16.1.4 A force value equivalent to three times the force recorded in 16.1.3 shall be calculated and thenapplied as described in 16.1.2 except that the valve seat mechanism is to be obstructed with a devicesuch as a 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) diameter steel rod inserted between the valve body and op

43、ening to preventthe valve from closing.16.1.5 The force determined in 16.1.4 is then to be applied to the valve with the seat mechanismunobstructed in direction to further close the valve against the stationary closing stop.MAY 17, 2004 SUBJECT 258 916.2 Valves with handwheels16.2.1 A valve shall wi

The test load isto be applied and measured by a torque wrench or by a load measuring device secured to the handwheel.16.2.3 The torque value specified in Table 16.1 is to be applied to:a) A valve in the closed position in a direction tending to further close it; andb) A valve in the open pos

47、ition in a direction tending to further open it.16.2.4 The minimum torque values for a valve having different handwheel diameters are to beinterpolated or extrapolated from the values in Table 16.1.MANUFACTURING AND PRODUCTION TESTS17 General17.1 The manufacturer shall provide regular production con

48、trol, inspection, and tests. The program shallinclude at least the Production Leakage Test, Section 18.MAY 17, 2004SUBJECT 2581018 Production Leakage Test18.1 Each valve shall not leak at the seat or valve body in excess of 20 cc/h when subjected to at least80 psig (0.6 Mpa) air pressure maintained

49、for at least 5 seconds when subjected to both seat leakage andbody leakage tests.18.2 Other test arrangements shall be permitted to be utilized when determined to be equivalent.MARKINGS19 General19.1 Each valve shall be marked with the following:a) Name or identifying symbol of the manufacturer or private labeler;b) Nominal size of valve;c) Distinctive model designation;d) Rated working pressure;e) A single arrow on the valve handle, clearly legible, showing the direction to turn the handlein the Open or Closed p
