、-2000 1 NOTEUsers of this BritishStandard: Marine Series should note that while observing the requirements of the standard they should at the same time ensure compliance with such statutory requirements, rules and regulations as may be applicable to the individual ship concerned. 1 Scope This Britis

、hStandard specifies requirements for design, construction, safety, performance, acceptance testing and marking of two classes of unpowered rope storage reels, used for the stowage of wire, natural fibre or synthetic fibre ropes for ships. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this BritishStandard, the t

、erms and their definitions given in BSMA30 apply. Terms particularly applicable to this British Standard are defined as follows. 2.1 nominal size the nominal size of a rope storage reel is the rope capacity expressed in metres. The nominal size should always be quoted together with the diameter and

、type of rope to be stored on the rope storage reel NOTE 1The range of nominal sizes covered by this standard are listed in Table 1, column1 and Table 2, column1. NOTE 2The nominal sizes of rope storage reels in Table 1 and Table 2 have been selected from the R10 series of preferred numbers (seeBS204

、5). 2.2 class A rope storage reel a reel having single reduction gearing, of plate side construction, for wire rope of30mm diameter and above or for fibre rope of80mm diameter and above 2.3 class B rope storage reel a reel having no reduction gearing, of angle frame or plate side construction, for w

The nominal sizes of classA and classB rope storage reels are listed in Table 1, colum

、n1 and Table 2, column1. 3.2 Material stresses. The manufacturer of the rope storage reel shall be responsible for determining the strength requirements of the component parts of the reel to withstand marine service. 3.3 Drum size 3.3.1 The drum diameter shall be as large as practicable and not less

、 than12times the wire rope diameter or four times the fibre rope diameter to be stored thereon. Manufacturers recommendations for synthetic fibre bending ratios should be observed. 3.3.2 The flange height shall be such that it will project at least2.5rope diameters beyond the outermost layer when th

、e rope is fully and evenly reeled on the drum. 3.3.3 The drum length shall be such that the rope can be fully accommodated in not more than ten layers, the complete length of the rope being evenly reeled. The length of the drum should be not less than11rope diameters. 3.4 Crank handles 3.4.1 All ree

、ls shall be supplied with two portable crank handles. 3.4.2 The crank radius shall be between300mm and450mm. 3.5 Drum brake 3.5.1 The rope storage reel shall be fitted with a drum brake capable of preventing the reel from paying out under the weight of the rope. 3.5.2 A ratchet or pawl mechanism may

The rope anchorage shall be such that the rope is securely fastened to the rope drum in a manner that will not result in damage to the rope at the connection or subsequent layers nor prevent even reeling of the rope. 3.7

、Control methods and movements 3.7.1 Method of control. The method of control shall be manual. 3.7.2 Direction of motion of the operating devices. The direction of motion shall be clearly marked in relation to the movement of the control, unless this is obvious. 3.7.3 Foot pedals. Brakes operated by

、foot pedal shall be applied when the pedal is depressed and released when raised. The maximum travel of the pedal shall not exceed250mm. 3.7.4 Levers. Brakes operated by levers shall be applied when the lever is moved towards the operator and released when the lever is moved away from the operator.

、3.8 Construction. Materials used for construction shall be in accordance with the appropriate British Standard for the material selected to ensure compliance with3.2. 3.8.1 Welding. All welding shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of BS1856. 3.8.2 Access. Access to reduction gear

、ing, bearings, brakes and control mechanisms shall be provided to ensure that adequate inspection and maintenance is facilitated. 3.8.3 Lubrication. The rope storage reel shall be designed to ensure that all bearing surfaces are lubricated during operation when inclined at any angle up to15 in any d

、irection. Adequate and accessible greasing and oiling points shall be provided to ensure that all required surfaces are capable of being properly lubricated. Nipples shall be in accordance with the requirements of BS1486-1. 3.8.4 Protection of metallic surfaces. Surfaces shall be free from moisture,

、 oil, grease, dirt, weld spatter, burrs and other imperfections, before applying the protective finish to metallic surfaces. External surfaces and internal surfaces shall be primed with an anti-corrosive priming paint adequate to provide protection against a marine environment, as soon as practicabl

、e after completion of the surface preparation. Internal surfaces of gear boxes shall be coated with an oil proof paint. 4 Performance Rope storage reels shall be designed to accommodate rope lengths and diameters listed in Table 1, columns2 and3 for wire rope and Table 2, columns2,3 or4 for fibre ro

、pe. 5 Acceptance tests Rules concerning the test at the manufacturers works for acceptance of the rope storage reel by the purchaser. The rope storage reel shall be tested as a complete unit at the place of manufacture to ensure: a) correct operation of drum and gearing; b) correct operation of brak

、e; c) quality of workmanship conforms with the requirements of clause3. The tests shall be performed by the manufacturer and witnessed by a classification society, if specified, and the results recorded. 6 Marking All rope storage reels shall be permanently marked by means of a rating plate, promine

The licensee is required to accept, and to operate in accordance with, a BSI scheme of supervision and control which identifies the tests to be carried out during manufacture and on the completed product, and specifies the frequency of such testing.
